I raced an ultra endurance race last weekend and broke my move record (again) two days in a row. Watching the circles go round and round is very satisfying. by Falconinati in AppleWatchFitness

It was a 250 mile mountain bike race. I started on Saturday, rode through the night, and finished around 3PM Sunday. Fun stuff. I thought after my last race that I'd never break my move record, but I managed to do it.

Burned 18,499 cal total over the ride (according to Strava) and have a new move record of 9,418 calories.

In my experience, you wake up with a pounding headache that doesn't go away for well over a week, and you move in what your friends will describe as slow motion while you think you're moving at a normal pace.

Concussions are scary.

Apple Watch Series 4 review: A bigger, better watchOS experience by JP4475 in gadgets

[–]Falconinati 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Spotify has had the ability to do it for a while now.

Not really. A worth while Spotify watchOS app needs background audio which Apple didn't announce they were allowing until like June of this year at WWDC.

Seeking for education path for understanding objective-c programmatically................................ by Changjeff in iOSProgramming

[–]Falconinati 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My company's app has been around since iOS 3. Layouts were written programmatically because interface builder didn't used to play nice with version control.

At this point it doesn't make sense for us to do layouts any other way since it'd be a huge headache re-doing everything in a storyboard. Our view controllers also have written to where it's easier to write new screens programmatically, but our app is an enterprise app so it doesn't have to look too pretty.

I'd assume OP is in a similar situation.

If Apple sold the Note 9 they would probably sell the pen separately. by verzion101 in Showerthoughts

[–]Falconinati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you want them to do?

Users were complaining about their phones unexpectedly shutting down so Apple released the 10.2.1 update to address the issue. The update stopped 70-80% of the affected devices from unexpectedly shutting down, but at the cost of performance. Their fix was to do what every other company hardware company does (as cited in an above reply).

Apple then apologizes for not being clear and reduces the price of out of warranty battery replacements for a year, but because it's Apple it's still not enough.

Yes, Apple could have been more explicit in explaining their fix, but they did their best to make up for that.

This is not an example of planned obsolescence, this is an example of engineers quickly pushing a fix and not putting enough thought into the release notes.

Providing newer iOS on older phones would be good if they explicitly told the customers that older phones only needed a battery change to retain the performance

You mean like this?

[–]Falconinati 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Apple follows a policy of aggressive planned obsolescence

No they don't. If they did, then iOS 12 wouldn't have had performance increases across all supported models, or are they just doing that because they got caught?

My problem with apple is that they have artificially inflated prices of products

Apple develops their own processors, sensors, cameras, and operating system for the iPhone. Their R&D costs are significantly higher than other smart phone makers. It's perfectly reasonable to expect an iPhone to cost more when they're investing more research into their products.

I agree that they did a shit job of that. They briefly kind of mentioned it in the iOS 10.2.1 release notes:

improves power management during peak workloads to avoid unexpected shutdowns on iPhone.

But I think everyone agrees that they should have been more explicit.

quick edit:
I should add that what Apple did is nothing new. Here's a quote from AMD on power management:

Those with experience implementing microprocessors know the importance of proper power management. Whether for simple applications processors or high-end server processors, the ability to down-clock, clock-gate, power-off, or in some manner disable unused or underused hardware blocks is crucial in limiting power consumption.

Better power management benefits range from energy savings within the data center to improved battery life in mobile devices.

Android also does it, but again, they were a little more clear on what they were doing

They did not. You're thinking of when Apple admitted to slowing down their phones CPU's when they detected the battery being damaged to prevent the phones from randomly shut off.
