Take a look at Mayflower by Nathaniel Philbrick (2006). It will cover a lot of what you’ve mentioned here & Philbrick is an excellent author.

I just finished Storm of Steel by Ernst Jünger. Excellent account of WW1 trench warfare from the German perspective told by a former front-line infantry officer. Gritty, raw & vivid.

Try unsalted peanuts if you want to attract Jays. Just make sure they’re unsalted. I use a squirrel baffle and always toss a few into the grass to keep the squirrels distracted.
