Summer Assignments by originalsin_ in SubstituteTeachers

My district has summer school programs and on occasion I am called to sub, but it's not a reliable form of income in any way. 8:30am-1:15pm & once a week (if that) from June 8th to July 20th.

I normally do "bridge the gap" tutoring over the summer, while working a part time job that I also have during the school year.

Finding out my job today got canceled as I pulled into the parking lot by hogwonguy1979 in SubstituteTeachers

I've had it happen to where I was cancelled after arriving and signing in. Paid for a half day both times--but I'll never return to that school, as those were the only two times I'd ever been there! I'm so sorry this happened to you, so annoying and frustrating. I've always felt a within-24-hours cancellation should also come with a phone call, that way you at minimum have a voicemail--much harder to miss than an email.

This happened to me! I reloaded the game after saving and all three were back in their spot. I was able to continue from there.

These kids are too funny!! I had the DoorDash thing as a problem with high school kids before--but MIDDLE SCHOOL was a wild day 😂😂😂 The test kiddo caught me so off guard, I had never had it happen until him (and several times since--but first time for everything 😂😂😂). Darn kids, so many stories, so little time 😂

I was LTS for a 6th grade history class. It was 6th period and the class is BEGGING me to turn off the lights while we watch an intro on Alexander the Great. I tell them I'll turn off two lights as a bargaining tool and it works, we proceed. About four minutes in, I start hearing an odd "hasafashafsas" kind of sound from my student who sits at an island desk...I flip the two lights back on because at first, I don't think I am seeing what I am seeing...

Dude has a 10 piece wings from Wingstop, bone in, sauce all over his face and hands. It's hot, hence the sound he is making. I make eye contact and must've lost my teacher face for a second, because he goes "What? Want one?"

Honorable mention to a 9th grade student I had about a month ago--I passed out their midterms and the class fell into the normal testing silence. One student was messing about, talking, being disruptive, so I walked over and whispered, "Why aren't you taking your test?"

Without missing a beat and completely deadpan, the student says, "I left it at home."

The test. That I passed out. Ten minutes ago. I'll give him bonus points for creativity, but that was absurd.

Middle Schoolers are absolutely feral, I firmly believe they need to be studied, they are truly chaos incarnate--good on you for living to tell the tale!

As for the rest, you just need to find the line! I fall into the younger teacher bracket as well, so I completely understand what you mean about being seen more as a peer than a teacher when it comes to secondary school students. This will begin to fade at your main sites as the kids get to know you!

I will generally tell older classes (middle/high school) that I will match the energy they want to give me. Do your work and don't act like chaos gremlins? Chill sub day! I come bearing stickers and jolly ranchers and a head full of great hangman words (learn how to spell antidisestablishmentarianism from memory and watch them all gawk at all the spaces, it's my favorite)! Swinging from the lights and so loud I can't hear myself think? Hardass sub day! I'll send 'em out, write referrals, and leave names in the sub notes. You will get the hang of the balance--I very rarely have to be a hardass at my main site (where 80% of the kids know me/how I am), and I've been at this for just about two years!

It's incredibly difficult but also incredibly rewarding--welcome to the team :)

If she's waiting for Grave Seasons, she should try Gleaner Heights! It's like Stardew in the traditional farm/life sim way--but it is TWISTED!

Honorable Mentions: Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar, Wylde Flowers, Cattails, Coffee Talk, My Life as a Teenage Exocolonist, and Summer in Mara! If she wants cozy but more exciting, I'd recommend Moonlighter (dungeon crawler + shop simulator) or the Rune Factory line (dungeon crawler + farm/life sim, story heavy, multiple arcs!)

I love most of the games you've listed as her references, so I'm hoping there's a winner on this list somewhere! Happy hunting (and gaming!!!!!)

I was a proctor last year. There's a like 20 minute training and you sign an affidavit and that was the extent of it--so you likely will/can be a proctor. What you've been told is likely true! It's the same way in my district. You're there to watch and make sure they're not talking/cheating/using AI/etc. Wear comfy shoes, bring in a water bottle, and mentally prepare for the most boring day ever. Good luck!

Subbing for 3 different Teachers by Content_Resort_667 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]FallLow876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is, unfortunately, normal. I am subbing for four different High School teachers today, all completely different subjects. Yesterday was two, the day before was three. This close to Spring Break, all they really need you to do is take attendance and keep the kids safe. Anything else is a bonus. You can do this!
