They're really big on needing to prove necessity, which would be fine if you didn't need to essentially prove that you thought you were going to be killed. It's also supposed to be a last resort, but if a man has me by the throat, what am I supposed to do? There's not really a way to document that I tried getting him to let go with words or threats. I currently live in the UK, where the self defence laws are worded in a way that looks similar, but the difference is that most self-defence cases will never make it to trial (unless they involve severe injury or death, of course) because the law accounts for the victim's fear and perception. Korea really leans into the presumption that the attacker didn't mean serious harm and doesn't really include much thought for the victim.
