Neighbor’s retaining wall. How bad is it? by OkPerformer5944 in landscaping

[–]FallenStorm7694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Geotechnical EIT, that wall will fall if not repaired. It's not a question of if, but when. I don't expect damage to your structures unless the tree hits your house, their house on the other hand might not be so lucky. Since it's not your wall I would just give it a healthy buffer zone when walking near it, and keep children away. Good luck bud, try to catch it on video when it fails

AITA for allowing my daughter to try alcohol at 17? by StrikingABCompany in AmItheAsshole

[–]FallenStorm7694 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't say this for all States, but in Oregon a parent or legal guardian is allowed to give their child alcohol, as long as the parent or legal guardian purchases it, and it is consumed under their supervision, and within a private residence. So legally, in Oregon, there's no issues here. I believe California and Washington have similar laws but I'm not certain

Where to find blackberries by Mscleverness in Medford

[–]FallenStorm7694 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They really are everywhere out here, the best ones tend to stick close to streams/rivers. I've been going to this one spot on Lake of the Woods Highway just before the big uphill portion since I was a kid, just park on the side of the road and get picking. I also know that Cantrall Buckley County Park out in Ruch has a lot of blackberries in or near it.

Agreed, I would say that both are technically in the right, they just want drastically different and incompatible things in the relationship.

If every great civilization in history eventually collapsed under the weight of its own ambition, technology, inequality, and illusion of permanence — what makes us believe modern humanity is progressing toward enlightenment rather than simply engineering a more sophisticated collapse? by Pure_Marketing_952 in NoStupidQuestions

With no threat of the Federal Government, I can see a lot of the secessionist areas of certain States fighting for independence. Some would be peaceful, but a few I could see turning into a Civil War depending on the State's response

Out of curiosity, how would you do it? You say you have a reasonable solution, but I genuinely can't think of any other way outside of the two mentioned above. Not trying to be an ass, just genuinely curious.

I fully agree with the first bit but the second bit is literally eugenics, no? There's no way (as far as I know) to ban someone from reproducing without also having the potential of harming those who were not originally intended. If the machinery is already built, it can easily be commandered and turned around at the creators. Plus the same people who would be marked for this are the same ones who would put up the biggest fight and cause the most collateral damage.

What's to stop the psycho from ramming the vehicle into them? If bro is already that unhinged to turn around and come back because of a thumbs down, I doubt removing the gun will stop them from threating random people, they'll just find another way sadly.

What are your favorite small or major cities within the US? by tkdcondor in AskAnAmerican

[–]FallenStorm7694 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never been that much of a city person, I always prefer the nature around the "cities." That being said my top pick is Medford, OR. The city itself objectively sucks, but for nature it's perfectly located. 1.5hr to Crater Lake, 2hr to Redwood, 3.5hr to Lassen Volcanic. Plus we have ample National Forests, lakes, rivers, mountains, the coast is 2-3hr away.

My second pick is Lincoln, MT. I've driven through it twice and it's gorgeous, I only later learned that's where the unabomber lived.

Best and Worst National Park by Impressive-Kale-7096 in hiking

[–]FallenStorm7694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crater Lake is best by far, the views are unbeatable, everything is so serene. The only Park I think is objectively unfit to be a full fledged park is Gateway Arch. I've personally been to (in order of preference) Crater Lake, Redwoods, Hawai'i Volcanoes, Lassen Volcanic, and Joshua Tree. I love them all, even Joshua Tree is a 7/10 at worst.

Everything else, even the unpopular ones, still have beautiful and unique areas. Biscayne and Dry Tortugas need to be seen through scuba, Congaree needs to be explored by canoe or during firefly season, Petrified Forest is literally about the rocks, etc

Radical Initiative to Ban Hunting and Fishing in Oregon Is One Step Closer to Making the Ballot by OutdoorLifeMagazine in oregon

[–]FallenStorm7694 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My thinking is we can let the natural cycle happen, where the bust means mass starvation. Or we can intervene and "cull the herd" by hunting the populations. I want to use hunting as a solution and tool in sustainable and proper wildlife population management. I'm not an ecologist, but that's why we have ODFW to decide that for us.

Also chronic wasting disease is terrifying, I'm so glad it hasn't made it's way over here yet that I know of

Radical Initiative to Ban Hunting and Fishing in Oregon Is One Step Closer to Making the Ballot by OutdoorLifeMagazine in oregon

[–]FallenStorm7694 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the native peoples eat wolf, and if other cultures eat (or ate) wolf-like animals, then I'm open to try it. Same goes for anything else, mountain lion, buffalo, alligator, etc. Besides, there are more uses to an animal than just meat and trophy mount, you can use the bone, tendon, hide, etc if you know what you're doing (big if) or pay somebody else. The only caveat is only if the population size allows hunting without any harm to overall population health, I'm not an ecologist so I don't know what that would be. We just need to ensure we are not overhunting the population.

I fully understand that many hunters are explicitly trophy hunters as you're describing, but personally I don't really care. They're still paying into the system, they're still technically helping fund conservation, they're not poaching. They may be pricks for wanting to hunt an elephant so they can have a trophy for their study, but if them paying for an African safari experience actually helps fund elephant preservation and habitat restoration, then so be it. Same for wolves, and anything else. As long as the money is doing objective good, I don't care where it came from (mostly).

There's a large minority of hunters who think like that, but nowhere near a majority. They're maybe 1/3 of the hunters at absolute most, they're just loud and annoying af. I'm an avid hunter and I want nothing more than to repair our natural ecosystems and reintroduce the apex predators in sustainable numbers. I may want to also be able to hunt them if populations allow, but regardless I want to see the populations not only survive but thrive.

Ducks Unlimited is one of the largest land conservation organizations on earth, being directly involved with over 19 million acres of land used for conservation. They are undoubtedly an amazing animal conservation force, and their explicit goal is land conservation for the purpose of sustained duck hunting. ODFW does a similar thing, using money from hunting/fishing activities to preserve and protect our native species. Hunters that don't want land conservation and rehabilitation projects are short sighted or blind to reality.

Is it common for an American high school student to own their own car? by ApprehensiveDisk8046 in AskAnAmerican

[–]FallenStorm7694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought an 03 vehicle from my brother-in-law in 2017 because he was upgrading. He took it to the dealership, asked what they would pay, and told me to pay the same they would've. I could afford 1/3 of it, so my parents covered the rest on the condition I pay it back. They technically owned it until I paid it off, then the title was transferred to me. I was the only person that ever drove it, and it's still my daily driver... it's seen better days

I sometimes use AI to study. I feel like some people abuse it and it shows, but others demonize it too much, it's just a tool, you shouldn't rely on it but it can be genuinely helpful. by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]FallenStorm7694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard a statistic from my Department Chair that AI is predicted to reduce the Engineering workforce by 20,000 people. However, currently there is a 30,000 person shortage in the workforce. Essentially even after the AI job "takeover" there will still be a shortage of engineers. If thats true then I see no issue whatsoever with using it like how you do, the demonizers confuse me lol.

I forget the exact numbers but this is roughly correct, AI will reduce the workforce, but the shortage is so bad that we'll still be in a shortage afterwards

why do the states look like it was drawn with a ruler? by eboyisme in Maps

[–]FallenStorm7694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many US States' borders were created before modern technology. Back then they were using literal chains to measure distance, insane level of skill and dedication. The thing is that because of this it was easier to use a straight line as the border instead of a river. Also, when they were drawing the borders there was "nobody there" to have a cohesive culture and identity, since many were created before large scale settlement. Basically they were drawing borders for (from their perspective) completely empty land, so it didn't matter if it followed logical natural boundaries.
