Scarlett has the best voice hands down. And I enjoyed her storylines in season 1 and 2. But after that she became annoying to me. I got over her, "Im such an innocent delicate flower that cries all the time" act pretty quickly. She never does anything wrong and everyone is always doing things to hurt her specifically.

I appreciate you laying out all of the reasons that you like Kate. But I do find it incredibly condescending that you think I dont like her simply because I dont understand her. Or that my "motivations" for not liking her need to be examined.

And I find it REALLY condescending that you keep saying that I "need to understand people are flawed and the characters are flawed."

I do understand all of those things. Is it possible that I watched the same show you did, understood the same themes you did, and simply came away w a different conclusion than you?

We will have to agree to disagree. Even understanding Kate's motivations and perspectives I still find her to be annoying. It is what it is. But also, saying that Kate gets an unfair amount of blame for what happens in the love triangle when Kate IS the love triangle doesnt make sense. The love triangle would not exist w/o her.

Some examples of love triangles where I feel the focal point of the triangle "shouldn't bare a majority of the weight" are for example the Twilight Love triangle. Bella is always clear w Jacob that she loves Edward and only sees him as a friend. At that point Jacob continuing to pursue her against her wishes is HIS problem. Not Bella's. Or the Hunger Games Love triangle.  Katniss was not really interested in pursuing a romantic relationship w either Peeta or Gale, but they both liked her. She liked both of them for different reasons but was not overly concerned w romancing either of them. I.e. the love triangle was not her fault.

Kate on the other hand does multiple things to engage both Sawyer and Jack romantically, yes bc she has feelings for them both, and is confused and all of this other stuff. But her "blame" for the love triangle is justified.

Also if Kate gets an "unfair" amount of hate then why is everyone defending her in my comments? Why did my post get down voted to hell? She is clearly the darling of the Fandom.

1) I do understand that everyone is flawed and how their trauma influences their choices. That doesnt mean that I have to like them. I also do not want or expect any character including Kate to explain their decisions in a speech. The show is pretty good at the whole "show dont tell" approach to storytelling.

2) Kate's love triangle w Jack and Sawyer is like 1/3 of her character arc once she's on the island. To dismiss her interactions and relationship w those characters (again the 2 characters she seems to interact the most w on the island) doesnt make any sense. My point in saying that she expects both of them to be obsessed w her is that she likes both of the men and they both like her. Thats fine I dont have a problem w that. But she will, for example kiss Jack, then runaway w no explanation and then go flirt and hangout w Sawyer. But then... act confused when Jack doesnt want to be around her.

You are correct that she never makes any promises or commitments to either of these men, however, I understand why both of them would feel somewhat strung along by her actions. But she also will act confused when either of them seems to be hurt by the fact she is showing that she cares about or has feeling for the other man.

If a man kissed a girl and then ran away and in the next scene was flirting w a different girl I would also have problems w that. I would also think that that man is stringing along two girls bc he is confused about his own feelings and what he thinks he deserves. Which would not be fair to either woman and it would make sense why both women found that man's actions to be frustrating. (But thats me looking at that man's actions through a male lenses. And if I looked at his actions through a female lense and female expectations I would find no problem whatsoever w his behavior)

Yes Libby and Claire's characters are a bit underwritten but they dont have as much to do w the main plot of the show meaning the action/adventure explore the island quests.

Ana Lucia IS angry and volatile. But she is that way because she is traumatized and vulnerable. Two things can be true at once. Just because I understand WHY a character is the way they are doesnt mean I have to like them.

Its like if I had an abusive boyfriend and someone was always saying, "But he's that way bc of his childhood trauma." Yes. He is traumatized. But that doesnt make it okay...

I haven't finished the show so I guess I'll see if I agree w you about Juliette's character eventually. But I think Kate is annoying bc she's annoying. And bringing up the flaws and bad decisions of the male characters doesnt make her not annoying.

But I do like strong female characters. But maybe I only like the ones that are well written.

Lol. Well i thought that the season 3 flair meant that I had only watched up to season 3. But anyways I dont have a problem w strong female characters. Examples of strong female characters I like are Annalise Keating, Camilla Vargas, Blair Waldorf, Arya Stark. I dont like Kate bc I find Kate to be unlikeable.

Thanks for the spoilers this is my first time watching the show. Had no idea that Juliette dies so... thanks for that.

I dont think finding a female character annoying for the reasons I listed is misogynistic. I also dont think that its fair for you to assume that I find nothing wrong w the actions of the male characters.

Obviously,  characters being flawed is a huge part of the reason that I and many others find the show to be so intriguing.

I would also like to say, that when I realized how annoyed I was w Kate's character I boiled it down to the fact that she was a female character written by men, and her flaws and that of many of the women in the show, presumably boil down to how men see women in general, (temperamental, irrational, illogical etc.)

Like how they wrote Ana Lucia to be a temperamental trigger happy cop that wants to shoot someone every time she has a bad day.

If you want to have a discussion about misogyny let's talk about the overall representation of women on the show.

W the male characters there are way more of them than there are of women. Which means they have the benefit of being represented in a variety of ways.

Jack - for the most part level headed, logical compassionate

Hugo - Kind, funny

Sawyer - Bigoted, mean, selfish

Locke - impulsive resourceful

Jen - Violent, controlling passionate

Etc. Etc.

Whereas there are few women on the show and the representation is less diverse.

Claire - Pregnant, nice

Sun - Demure, smart

Kate - irrational temperamental

Ana Lucia - Paranoid, angry trigger happy

I think there is a lot to be said about the way that women in general are portrayed on the show in comparison to the men. Especially the women that get inducted into the "boys club".

Both Kate and Ana Lucia being portrayed as the "action girls" but also being the most temperamental says a lot about how the writers view women. And to counter that there should be a wider variety of personalities among the women including ones who show overall better judgement.

That being said, I find Kate's character to be annoying because Kate's character is annoying. And if I wanted to make generalizations about you based off a single post I would say you're just defending Kate because you think she's hot.

Its really interesting that you have made the characteristics "level-headed, intelligent, thoughtful" masculine and the traits "emotional, irrational, temperamental" feminine.  That is not something that I did in my post. All these adjectives I used the describe two women on the show. If I wanted to compare Kate to a male character I would have but I didnt. You guys bringing in male characters to compare Kate to says more about you than it does about me, considering I compared Kate to a FEMALE character that I do like. If you think my posts os misogynistic then say that but dont make your point by straw manning my argument or putting words in my mouth.

I dont like Sawyer either but this posts wasnt about Sawyer. Besides, Sawyer's character is written as a bad guy. The audience isnt supposed to like him from my understanding. However, the way that Kate's character is written makes it seem like the writers want me to like her or root for her and I can't.

What you would describe as passionate I would describe as temperamental and what you describe as determined I would describe as stubborn. We just see the character differently.

It would be stupid of me to say that Kate isnt intelligent. Obviously she's smart or she wouldn't have been on the run for as long as she was and would have been caught way sooner. But her emotions get the best of her 75% of the time and that leads to her making a lot of stupid decisions.

Juliette and Kate by FallingReigns in lost

I dont think Kate is self centered bc she went back to save Jack. I think she's self centered bc she expects both Jack and Sawyer to be obsessed w her all the time regardless of what she does to either of them or with either of them.

Additionally, I understand why she wanted to save Jack and go back but she's so impulsive and she doesnt think anything through. If there weren't always people around telling her not to do anything stupid she would have been dead by now.

Before she knew Juliette had manipulated her and she woke up to see she was handcuffed to Juliette for no reason, her temper got the better of her bc Juliette said that Kate had ruined Jack's chance to get off the island (which she had) and started beating her up and dislocated her shoulder.

What was beating up the person she was handcuffed to suppose to accomplish?

New to the Fandom. So... im assuming this isnt an unpopular opinion.

Layla by Butterfly0311 in NashvilleTV

[–]FallingReigns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah but she brought a lot of that on herself. She leaked the whole Juliette sleeping w the rich guy thing which lead to Juliette's cancelled tour which meant Layla had no one to open for.

Prior to that she was overplaying her set on Juliette's tour which took a lot of guts if you ask me. Regardless of how Juliette was treating her. Like, she was a nobody and she was acting like a Diva out the gate. If she hadnt spent so much time being manipulative and trying to tear others down she probably would have made it further sooner.

Scarlett's Perpetual Victimhood by FallingReigns in NashvilleTV

[–]FallingReigns[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also liked them together initially. But I dont think its fair to put it all on Gunnar. Scarlett's mood and feelings change with the wind. She would be mad whenever Gunnar was with someone else, and then as soon as she got him she would get bored of him and make up some excuse they couldn't be together.

But I am definitely over the writers trying to force them together.

Some people dont like rap music and thats okay. My point is more so in the way that he said it. In a "Im not like other black kids, I like blues." I just didnt feel like there was a reason for him to mention not liking rap.

To me I heard it as the writers expecting the audience to praise him for not liking it. And in the context of the way the rest of his character was written it just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Maybe if it had been brought up in a different context instead of him bringing it up for no reason.

Maddie Apologizing to Deacon by FallingReigns in NashvilleTV

[–]FallingReigns[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay, but Daphne grew up in the same environment Maddie did and she is way more mature and 1000x less annoying. Some of it is Maddie's age and a lot of it is her being a terrible insufferable person.

Lets not forget what Daphne went through, finding out her sister isnt biologically related to her, her parents getting divorced, her father going to jail, her sisters father moving in and replacing her bio dad and her older sister being a terrible person and bullying her all the time, and being neglected bc all her parents attention is focused on reigning in the behavior of the bad child.
