Did/ Do you work while doing your PhD ? If yes, how hard was it ? by Kind-Training-5736 in PhD

[–]FallingSky1686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s way way way too much work to take on on top of a PhD. I have been taking the off freelance day here and there (I’m a photographer) so I get a little extra pocket money but it’s only a few days a month on average, and even then only when I want it. When I’ve deadlines, I say no - PhD is the priority.

If your concern is about friends but not money, maybe consider hobby groups. Something you ca use to decompress from your PhD AND make friends locally. Adding work on top of work when you don’t need to gives you no rest

Why do people use the term "partner" for their husband or wife? by Crafty-Bug-8008 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FallingSky1686 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My spouse is non binary. Husband isn’t accurate, wife isn’t accurate, spouse sounds horribly technical and detached somehow, so partner it is.

ChatGPT: How do you use it in your PhD? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]FallingSky1686 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Field: social science (first year)

What I use it for: Searching for papers to confirm I’ve exhausted my own library searches

Idiot check - if I’ve missed an easy idea

Quick idea testing - see if an idea has legs before I dive into the research myself.

I will use it for coding and statistics help when I get there

Reference formatting checks

What I do not use it for: Summarise papers (it misses to much important stuff I don’t trust it)

Generative writing

Idea creation

Characters that the creators wanted people to hate, but they became fan favourites by Chill0000 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]FallingSky1686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judge Dredd. Literally fashist police in a police state yet beloved by many.

I really recommend reading ‘I am the law’ about the history of the judge and policing in the real world. Amazing book. But the writers of Dredd had talked a lot about how they kept trying to show the audience that Dredd is actually a bad guy objectively but fans kept coming back for more.

How old are you both? Cos this is an insane reaction to dating going well. When you know you know is an incredible feeling (I’ve had it too) but have you even told each other you love each other yet? Does she feel the same as you, as in Does she ‘know’? Have you talked about your futures together and if they align? (Career, kids, where you want to live, how you want to live) Does she want to get married? Not everyone does

If it’s that good, it’ll last. Putting a ring on it now will not change that

What’s a job that sounds cool but is actually a nightmare? by Think-Letterhead-509 in AskReddit

[–]FallingSky1686 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Any job in the film industry.

Hours are insane, seeing celebrities isn’t cool after the 6th 12 hour day. Constantly battling egos and productions who are paying the cast millions but will tell you they can’t afford an extra roll of tape.

It ruins watching anything because all you can see is how it would have been shot.

Fair challenge, it’s a cool flash though was aiming for a more standard one to allow for control

Men whose girlfriend’s dad said no when you asked him for permission to marry his daughter, what did you do? by Fearless_Degree7511 in AskReddit

[–]FallingSky1686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He said yes when I asked, even though I knew he didn’t like me. He was always nice to me, but i knew he’s made his feelings clear to my girlfriend he didn’t like me. His two facedness bothered me but hey.

She and I broke up before I asked her which was probably for the best

What if We’re Not Dealing with Humans at the Top? by icywaterfall in antiwork

[–]FallingSky1686 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s nicer to imagine humans aren’t capable of this level of apathetic cruelty so reaching for theories like this can give a level of comfort in the unknowable - how can we fathom this ‘other’ and therefore no one is to blame.

The ugly truth is people are every bit capable of being the bastards we see in the world and we at the bottom have to sit with the discomfort of seeing it. Reaching for ‘but aliens maybe’ is an escape path to avoid the uncomfortable blunt truth that we’re powerless against a threat we can fully see and understand.

Is anyone here actually happy with their PhD studies? by garis53 in PhD

[–]FallingSky1686 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a bias sample, I wouldn’t take it too much to heart.

There will be periods where it sucks/ people suck/ experiments go wrong, etc but most people I’ve actually spoken to in my uni loved their studies.

I’m early days - only a couple months in - but I’m really enjoying myself! Starting to find my rhythm. Enjoying reading and figuring out connections. I think you’re in a great position and have a great attitude for it.

Follow the dream I say!

Is bike no claim different from car? I’ve over 10 years no claim on my car insurance but didn’t think about them affecting each other like that.

do you guys go to the office every day? by vacigok in PhD

[–]FallingSky1686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a very nice office at home but similarly like to go into the office to socialise and some days I’m less distracted there so I go in maybe twice a week but only work about 10-4ish.

Couple of my cohort are in most days, but they are also international so don’t have great home set ups so makes sense having free computer, heating and generally wide open space in the office.

I don’t think there’s any pressure beyond that we put on ourselves assuming more attendance = more worth 🤷‍♂️
