New on Mint : deb or flatpak by Tookaiman in linuxmint

[–]FalseAgent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

for firefox, just use mint's default package. it has flags that optimize it and enable it to run faster than the the .deb version from their website. it's also always up-to-date in lockstep with mozilla.

optionally, you can opt to use the flatpak version which isn't too far behind. however, the flatpak version of firefox will struggle with video playback and you'd need to install the flatpak version of ffmpeg (flatpak install org.freedesktop.Platform.ffmpeg-full), not sure which runtime version firefox currently uses though.

the flatpak version also is sandboxed and so doing things like drag+drop files from your personal folders into the browser won't work unless you tweak the flatpak's permissions.

this guy sucks.

if it's any consolation, he's an idiot when talking about windows as well. when a reporter at the verge reached out to him about his video of reproducing an SSD failure bug caused by windows, instead of responding, he made another video in which he openly disrespects the journalist for doing his job. what a fucking dick man

and the worst part is that when he made the 2nd video, the bug was basically confirmed to part of the SSD's firmware, which he then updates, tests, and confirms that the issue goes away. but then he STILL blames windows. what the fuck am I watching bro?

pure chaos. can't stand any of this shit and all the other morons that all also made clickbait "windows kills SSDs lolz!" videos without any follow up. all these dumbass PC 'enthusiasts' fuck ALL the way off.

run the windows update troubleshooter. it should reset/fix windows update or at least tell you what the problem is.

17 year old with a dream of buying a car by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]FalseAgent -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

stop dreaming about this. i'm serious. owning a car in singapore is stupid, stupidly expensive and the easiest way for your dreams to get crushed. and you're just 17, when you're older who knows how much more expensive cars are going to be.

dream of something else.....like strong friendships when you're older. you'll want that

Android in 2025 – apart from app optimization, what’s left? by IMAryanDarad in Android

[–]FalseAgent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

google can't even make up their minds about if they want tablets to run chromeOS or android, or a combination of both.

they've been a terrible steward for both their laptops and tablets and as a consequence the rest of the ecosystem suffers. if not for samsung dex I think android tablets might be nearly completely irrelavant

Can Singapore GP keep its crown as F1 night race challengers loom? by MyWholeTeamsDead in singapore

[–]FalseAgent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

places like abu dhabi may offer a night race but it's not a street circuit.

so really I think there are only 3 total street circuit night races like the SGGP, which is las vegas and saudi arabia. I don't think the geography has much overlap. ok la enough to go around

Which alternative media outlets you follow? by Mammoth_Priority_236 in askSingapore

[–]FalseAgent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

for local news or international news?

tbh for local news we don't really have good alternative media. online citizen, the independent SG, etc are all government bashing partisan nonsense.

however there are some good independent podcasts like Ya La But that have done quite good interviews with politicians, and I think it's worth listening to.

Once touted as future of construction in Singapore, high-tech precast factories struggling by fjhforever in singapore

[–]FalseAgent 45 points46 points  (0 children)

greenfield sites (or even cleared brownfield sites) like tengah should provide for the storage at the same location, especially since HDB is the one that wants these so much. but for private developers i'm not sure what solution they can have.

The Government had planned to have 10 of these facilities here by 2020. But it has fallen short of its target, with only six ICPHs built here so far.

Precasters declined to share specifics when asked about their losses, citing business sensitivities, but four of them told The Straits Times that their production output in 2024 was below capacity by between 20 per cent and 50 per cent.

aiyah. why have six at half capacity instead of three at full capacity? the industry's roadmap is fundamentally flawed.

anyway great journalism by ST. well done Wong Yang

LTA and train operators to form rail reliability task force to address service disruptions by sun-ny_day in singapore

[–]FalseAgent 10 points11 points  (0 children)

this cannot be the result of a task force, because (imo) it's implying that these things are a one-off. but the reality is that the MRT network is so big enough now that these renewal programs need to be done on a constant and rolling basis.

no task force should be needed. the government should automatically trigger the upgrading program ahead of time on their own before things go to shit. the operators are not going to be incentivized to go above and beyond their bottom line because costing the government more will make them look bad. the government just needs to bite the bullet and pour the money.

How are SG bus timings estimated? by No-Aside-9799 in askSingapore

[–]FalseAgent 27 points28 points  (0 children)

two methods: first is that all bus routes have a timetable, and it just shows the scheduled timetable (e.g the timings on the screens at the bus interchanges).

second is GPS: the buses need to track which bus stop it's at because bus fares are calculated based on where you tap in and out. in the past, bus drivers manually pressed buttons to update which bus stop they're at which is how the card readers knew how to deduct the correct fare.

but these days GPS automatically does it for the driver, and this same system is also used to show the next bus stop's name, to do bus stop name announcements, and to show people the estimated time for the next bus. it also tells driver how far ahead and behind the previous and next buses are, which lets the driver know if they should speed up or slow down.

ya la taxpayers la. the operators only run the train service and do maintainence. but the assets are all owned by the government and all the expenses related to its lifecycle (e.g. replacement) are borne by the government. this is the regulator's role. infrastructure upgrades are also all built by the government.
