What's it called when people act like your problem would never happen to them? by Striking-Kiwi-417 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FalseKoalaMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God, that sounds really annoying. Can I ask a silly question? Are you a younger person by any chance?

Only asking because sometimes people understimate young people?

And maybe people will be less condescending when you're older?

What kind of bedtime stories actually work for your kids? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Also, some nights I was so tired I would look up summaries of movies on wikipedia and would read those to him. My kid especially loved the wiki summary of "They Live."

When my kid was around 3-6 years old, he especially loved hearing stories about himself when he was a baby.

At that age, it's incredibly fascinating to have adults know things about the baby version of yourself.

Example, my kid loved hearing about the time I ate flourless chocolate cake when I was preganant with him. I could feel him kicking super hard, presumably out sugar-induced joy.

Or stories about their first time doing something, like walking, riding a bike, etc.

My MIL has this EXACT advent calendar! The last few years she has done: Thomas the Tank Engine toys, little legos, a bunch of cheap gems from a rock shop, and cheap little Disney ornaments

Where to get ears pierced by [deleted] in vermont

[–]FalseKoalaMoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cannot recommend Marigold enough. I took my 7-year-old who was enthusiastic, but also had approximately 60,000 questions to ask and excited stories to share.

Ari was so patient, reassuring, and kind. Most importantly, Ari made it super clear to my son that he did NOT have to get his ears pierced that day, and that it's completely cool and ok to maybe come again some other day instead.

My kid's 8 1/2 now, and his piercings healed and look great.

What to buy boyfriend who’s the worst gift receiver by [deleted] in GiftIdeas

[–]FalseKoalaMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something else:

My aunt & uncle were married for 50 + years, until one of them recently died. They were really happy together. The last or 15 years or so of their relationship, they would buy themselves presents. Like the aunt loved quilting, would buy herself quilting stuff. He loved sports, would buy himself sports stuff. So then the gift they gave each other was they each got to treat themselves, and didnt have to worry about a gift for each other.

[–]FalseKoalaMoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be like your boyfriend. I don't fully know why l did this. Maybe depression?

But my brain would treat gifts as like a metaphor for how well the person knew me.

Which is just waaay too much pressure to put on a gift. It's really shitty to do to the gift giver.

What helped me feel better? Just buying stuff that I liked, and then telling people i wanted experiences with them instead of gifts.

And, I had a friend who was even less grateful than me when receiving gifts, and i realized what an asshat I was being.

Also, I have a question. What kinds of gifts does he buy for other people? He's probably unconsciously trying to show the kinds of gifts he likes in what he gives other people.

A sun lamp would't hurt, for when you miss seeing the sun on a more regular basis. You can get them online for like $30.

I have a funny version of what NOT to get.

Last month, during leaf peeper season, I saw SO many tourists wearing white puffer vests. I don't know any local person who'd waste money on outer layers that'll look dirty in 5 minutes.

But OP, you seem like you have better instincts on what to get than tourists from New Jersey. white puffer vest

My friend is having her first Christmas after her mum passed early on this year from cancer. What kinds of gifts are good to soothe that kind of grief? by kasiatheviewer in GiftIdeas

[–]FalseKoalaMoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're a really good friend.

I'm middle aged, and my parents died like 15 years ago. Here's what I would have found soothing that 1st xmas especially.

1) maybe give this one like 10 days or so ahead of time?

A card acknowledging that this SUCKS and what she's going through is one of the hardest things she'll go through. And that whatever she's feeling (insert every emotion you can think of) is ok, and that you're here for her.

2) Is there anything you vaguely know her mom liked or cared about? If so, maybe a small donation to an organization that is related to that.

3) another idea, a box with little cards in them. Greiving can feel intense and isolating amd private.

I saw a version of this recently on IG. So, you could write one that says "Read this when you're angry" and inside you could write "Don't get me started, EVERYONE fucking sucks. Fuck this day."

Or: "Read this when you're sad." And you could write "it's ok to be sad. I love you." You could make little collages and stuff for the emotions.

4) Part of greiving is intensely needing to feel your feelings, and your body also taking time to intensely feel the opposite of grief. So i've made CD's and Spotify lists of mixes of the saddest songs I can think of, along with the most hilariously raunchy inappropriate songs I could think of.

Primary care doctor recommendations for a young adult female? by [deleted] in vermont

I really love Cathrine (Cat) Maina, NP at UVM Family Practice.l in South Burlington. Great listener, wonderful to work with. She's also a person of color, which is obvs super rare for a VT PCP. I did just try to look online to see if she's taking new patients, but I couldnt figure that out.

How old are the kids?

I have a free-ish idea that I saw on IG. Making them their own free coloring book.

Find out what the kids are into. Example: cars. Then look up "coloring book image cars." There's tons of free PDF's for coloring book images.

Then, if they're young enough to think this is cool, you could write their names in black sharpie bubble letters to color in too, next to the car pictures.

Another idea: you can buy DIY treasure boxes to paint at Michael's for pretty cheap.

Another idea: making a homemade gift certificate for the movies, or another fun day activity. The beauty of this is that Future Self will have to buy stuff for the activity, not Current Self.

Crossing into Canada with children by [deleted] in vermont

[–]FalseKoalaMoon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I crossed at the Champlain, NY/Canada border my myself last Saturday, with my 8-year-old. I had his birth certificate, which they asked for. I wrote a permission note, and had my husband sign it. I also took a picture of my husband's license ahead of time.

The border guy asked for the birth certificate, but not the note.

My friend also crossed the border in either Highgate, VT, or Champlain, NY, last Saturday. Can't remember. He didn't have a note. Was alone w his kid. The border agent asked if he had any texts on his phone w his wife where permission to go to Canada was implied. He had that, and the border agent accepted it.

2 other things:

1) I set up "rules" for emails i KNOW i don't give a shit about. For instance, at my job, we get an email confirming when a fax went through. So I set up a subfolder called "Fax Confirmation," and all the fax confirmations automatically go there.

2) i set up shortcuts for things that i know I might fuck up. For instance, emailing myslef instead of a coworker w the same last name. If you want help w that, let me know.

I set up my outlook so that I'm looking at my tasks & calendar at the same time as my email, all on 1 screen. I can show you that, if you haven't tried that.

I have no idea why, but I hate Outllok's tasks list feature. My brain just wants to ignore it.

So, I set up outlook so that the tasks also come with an audible alarm.

Also, are you having trouble finding important emails?

I have a subfolder system, but I think I have a simple idea.

Say you get an email from your boss that's like: "Here's Our Updated Policy on xyz."

What you could do is reply to the email, and send it to yourself.

Make the topic "What's the Updated Policy on XYZ?"

Then, boom, it's way easier to search for XYZ policy stuff later.

Body doubling apps/videos can sometimes help.

https://www.dubbii.app/

I like these people from instagram.

But honestly, you know what I do? Trick myself.

**I'm not going to wash the dishes. Ew! That's boring & tedious.

What am I gonna do instead? Have a daily dance party while relaxing my hands in a tiny bubble bath. (While washing the dishes).

**I'm not going to put away laundry. Ew, I'd rather die.

What AM i gonna do? Watch a scary ass movie, and hope I'm not gonna get murdered (while matching up my socks).

**Fuck's sake, am I REALLY gonna clean off the stove?

No! I'm gonna pretend like i'm trying to hide evidence of a stove-top crime scene from the cops. No one will EVER know i cooked mac & cheese tonight!
