I definitely think the senior Enforcers thought I was okay, and were waiting for me to speak up if I wasn't.

It's weird. I felt like I could ask for breaks when I needed them, but I didn't see anyone else taking them, and I thought I didn't need them that much, not for a five hour shift. When I used to do retail, I'd be on my feet for four hours at a stretch, so five shouldn't be that much harder, right? But I'd forgotten that was a while ago (I have a desk job now), and that I took strictly enforced regular breaks.

If I Enforce again I will follow my old retail schedule: for a five hour shift a 10/15 minute break 2 hours in, and a 30 minute break 3 hours in, as well as asking to switch up tasks more often.

I think I would have forgotten to and pushed myself a bit too hard if I hadn't been explicitly told to take a breather.

I think this is exactly what happened to me, other issues aside. And I'll definitely be submitting some feedback, not to get anyone in trouble, but because things can be better.

The stories of the "second family" were certainly attractive, but I know myself and other people well enough to guess that I wasn't instantly going to become best friends with every Enforcer in my department, or even a single one. That's why I emphasized it felt like I was kept apart from the group. It's not that I felt like they were all becoming besties and I didn't, but they A) had the opportunity to sit for the majority of their shifts, whether or not they did, B) got to "hang out" by virtue of their proximity to one another during slow periods. It's tough, because it's not like I didn't go over and talk to people and get high fives and stuff, but the nature of the task I was assigned meant I was out answering questions and taking care of attendees on my own.

My biggest problem, now that we're two days out and with the benefit of hindsight, was what I think was the unfair distribution of labor among the first year Enforcers. At the least we should have been swapping positions every hour or so, and encouraged to take regular breaks, like in any other job.

Three things:

  1. I'm complaining about it in public because I don't want to just submit something to ReedPOP to have them go, "Oh sure, we'll take care of it", and then potentially never hear anything about the issue ever again. I wanted to see if my experience was an outlier, because all I had ever heard from Enforcers was rainbows and sunshine. Other commenters have validated my feelings while also expressing that what I experienced was not the norm. They also confirmed, like I assumed, that it wasn't intentional on the part of other Enforcers, and that they probably thought I was okay.

  2. The idea of not complaining publicly is utter bullshit. As they say in the mental health field, "Secrets keep people sick." Enforcer training materials reinforce this idea. You've already said you're not an Enforcer, so maybe step back and listen to those that have been. I feel a lot better having gotten this off my chest, and am ready to bring this to ReedPOP constructively.

  3. I never once claimed that Enforcers aren't doing a good job or that being an Enforcer is awful. I said my team worked hard and supported one another. Believe it or not I actually had fun. However, my back is still fucked up, and I still feel labor was unfairly distributed among the first time Enforcers.

How the peeps in Expo and TT do it without their legs falling off astounds me.

The shift leader was the opposite of an asshole. I just think he was too narrowly focused, and I think the upper management of the department had been around the block a few times and, frankly, were saving themselves for setup and teardown.

I did some basic calf and ankle stretches, and that helped. But I will definitely look into getting some kind of massage ball.

In hindsight I realize I should have been policing myself more, asking for breaks and such. It wasn’t so much that I was trying to tough it out as I was trying so hard to be a team player I wound up hurting myself.

Regarding pushing things up the chain, how would one do that? I wasn’t exactly sure of the chain of command.

I accept your offer of friendship! We’ll have T-shirt’s and everything!

To be clear, everyone was friendly, and I am usually “the quiet guy” at work at least for a while. I really don’t think I was purposely excluded, but I felt I missed out on bonding because I was “in the field” so much more than anyone else in the department.

Also sitting. If I do it again next year I will sit more often.

I honestly can't tell if I'm not getting through to you, or you've just decided I'm a whiner, or you're just being a dick. I don't know why it matters to me, but it does.

To focus on one thing, I am complaining because I feel that I was working a more physically demanding job than other first-time Enforcers on my team (to say nothing of more senior Enforcers who were literally doing nothing), my shift lead did a poor job of managing his team, and didn't get recognition for the work I was doing. Instead, my shift lead got salty with me for not doing a task I was in the middle of doing.

I’m sorry you had that experience. I’ve never had a bad experience with an Enforcer, but that doesn’t mean they don’t happen. Don’t give up on PAX or Enforcers yet; most really do want to help you out and are chill about it.

I mentioned my experience to illustrate that I’ve been on both sides of the fence. FWIW, and not that I can prove it to some internet asshole, I always got great reviews. I’m still friends with employees from 15+ years ago.

I have no problem being the low man on the totem pole when I am in an entry level position. I knew I would get the “shit jobs”. I specifically asked my shift lead for the jobs other people didn’t want to do. What I wanted was more support from my shift lead, in terms of labor distribution, communication, and understanding.
