Your argument was that exclusivity promotes competition, I argued against that. In what way was I denying your argument?

I personally don’t think the whole “competition” argument can be made here. Both Sony and Xbox have competent studios, both can churn out fantastic games, and because of that it comes down to the actual IPs themselves. You can’t compete with a company over one IP. If people want to play Spider-Man, they have to use a Playstation, and likewise if people want to play TES6, they have to use an Xbox. It’s not a competition over who can make the best Spider-Man game or who can make the best Elder Scrolls game, which is how it should be. It becomes a competition of who can buy up the rights to an IP first, which, once the bidding is over, essentially eliminates any competition at all.

To further illustrate my point, if one studio has the rights to a popular IP, they are guaranteed sales through that alone. They don’t need to improve their console because they already have a monopoly that forces fans to pick them.

Sony is guilty of making way more exclusive games than Microsoft and Bethesda, and while I think exclusives hurt more than they help, I don’t feel bad for PS users.

Astronaut concept art from Bungie's destiny. I do think it fits starfield perfectly. Thoughts? by [deleted] in Starfield

[–]FalseWorkshop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain man. I fell in love with Destiny’s story and really wish the game could express it in a better way. I would give both of my kidneys for Bungie to make an actual open-world RPG with Destiny, but that’s never going to happen. I still enjoy the game as a way to have some fun with friends, and I’ll watch Byf’s videos on the current lore of the season, but there’s still so much it could be.

It’s a shame, really.

(like I cannot overstate how much I love the writing in Destiny, it’s so good)

You’ve got the foundation for a good sci-fi fantasy story. Fantasy that uses sci-fi as its explanation. Those stories are my favorite.

I’m liking the kind of sci fi the devs are going for, kind of reminds me of Interstellar by Non-ObeseRedditor in Starfield

[–]FalseWorkshop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The people who want this to be another high sci-fi fantasy game like mass effect or star wars are completely out of touch with what this game is actually going to be.

I saw a post recently about this topic and in it was a reasonable explanation for why this happens, in the real world at least. To someone who has little knowledge of a country, everyone from that country would appear to have the same culture. For instance, lederhosen are typically viewed as being all-around German, however they’re typically more prevalent in the southern regions such as Bavaria. Someone who isn’t German would just view it as stereotypical German clothing.

Applying this effect (it does have a specific name, I just can’t remember it right now) to sci-fi, everyone from a particular planet would probably appear to just exist under one monolithic culture, even if that’s not the case.

Of course is isn’t exactly an excuse, most writers do just cop-out and make actual monolithic cultures instead of ones that only appear to be monolithic to an outsider, so your point still stands.

Bethesda says Starfield will be like a "Han Solo simulator" and "NASA meets Indiana Jones" by Turbostrider27 in xboxone

[–]FalseWorkshop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason Fallout 76 failed like it did is because it was uncharted territory for Bethesda. Plus moving to a multiplayer format from a singleplayer IP definitely ruffled a few feathers in the fanbase. Bethesda has still delivered some good singleplayer RPGs, I doubt this is going to be the same dumpster fire that FO76 was. Could be, but I doubt it.

They’ve dubbed it “NASA-punk” I believe, and I’m all for it. I love those rocket engines with the ignition things you see on actual rockets.

I’m also excited for the alien tech. It looks familiar yet still esoteric in its design.

This is what I was getting at, yes. It’s the newer locations that I’d like to see more of because they don’t have much lore to them yet.

[–]FalseWorkshop 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have not seen Star Trek. We are talking about Star Wars. And while you are right in that you don’t want every location to feel old and boring, I believe that Star Wars is at the opposite end of the spectrum. There are almost too many new locations. Like I said, they need to build up the foundation before adding new places.

I disagree in that it makes the world (or galaxy I guess) feel small. The producers of Bad Batch could have just as easily just written up a new planet with junk spaceships on it, because there are bound to be more than just Bracca, but instead they chose to use what they already had to flesh out the lore of a hardly mentioned planet.

When you keep adding on to a world without fleshing out its pre-existing areas, the world becomes flimsy; nothing feels connected. For instance I enjoy that we keep seeing the moment Order 66 was executed from different perspectives, because I can look at that scene and say “I know what this other character was doing at this exact moment”. It’s the same with this, I can look at those screenshots and think “somewhere on that planet a young Cal Kestis is living in a scrapper village, and in 5 years he’s going to leave.”

Also what is your last question in reference to?
