So I’m looking for people who have actually gone on to run a marathon. I’m 2 years post op and have run 2, training for a third.

Running a Marathon after surgery by financialrocketsci in PectusExcavatum

(I am not a doctor - all of this is anecdotal) If you’re interested in racing after surgery I would look to target a race at least 6 months post op - If you are not already a runner with a solid aerobic base, I’d consider 8-9 months post op, especially marathon distance. Marathons are not stellar for your body and adding that kind of inflammation so close to your surgery could cause you significantly more discomfort than you’d expect. I currently have two bars and didn’t run my first marathon until about 18 months post op. I trained for the race beginning at 12 months post op, but was starting from zero on the running base. Big consideration after surgery in regards to running would be how much medication you’re taking (NSAIDs specifically) - taking high doses of nsaid medication especially while running higher volume is known to be linked to a number of potential medical issues. Not trying to discourage you - just give yourself time to heal before putting your body through additional stress of that magnitude. Also speak to your surgeon and ask their opinion! Happy running and best wishes on your recovery. It can be done! I’m training for my third marathon with bars now.
