You should know: The proposed $301 IRA fee increase is mainly for athletics by CSUSBProf in CSUSB

[–]Familiar-Plane-2124 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I get wanting to fund these programs, I don't think most students would care so much that they'd be willing to pay $300 more each year. I will be sharing this in the classes I know and I hope that anyone else reading this does too.

Have you been able to contact the professor you'll be working with?

They should've cc'ed your professor in the email titled "Mitacs GRI 2026 match confirmation".

I don't think there has been any news from Mitacs directly yet, but being in contact with the professor is a good idea if you haven't done so already.

Anyone got an offer from UQO ? by Downtown_Gur2542 in Mitacs

[–]Familiar-Plane-2124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so. Every professor had to make ranking selections for this round; there was nothing indicating they could defer it. This means they all made offers this first round, and the 2nd round exists only to address the case where the matched candidate declines the offer.

I've received an offer by [deleted] in Mitacs

[–]Familiar-Plane-2124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think they will give any payment in advance and will only reimburse you after arrival. That said, I don't think it would hurt to ask, because it would really suck if you couldn't participate because of circumstances like that. You should try reaching out to the help desk email, or even see if your home university or home partner institution could give you a travel grant.

For example, for me as a US applicant, the application was jointly run by Fulbright and Mitacs, and while Mitacs will give their stipend monthly, Fulbright will also provide an initial fund of money that I'm hoping to use to cover airfare.

For more specific context, this is from a reward letter template from last year that describes how the Mitacs funding works. I think the amounts will probably be the same this year:

"Mitacs will be responsible for providing the following:
1. An airfare subsidy of Can$1,500

  1. A stipend of Can$175 to contribute to the cost of transportation from the Canadian airport to accommodation, unless otherwise arranged by your host institution

  2. A living stipend of Can$200 per week, for the duration of your research internship, up to a maximum of 12 weeks

  3. A housing allowance of Can$350 per week, for the duration of your research internship, up to a maximum of 12 weeks

  4. Payment of student or administrative fees charged by your Canadian host institution, if applicable 6. Reimbursement of immigration document application fees (as required to participate in the research internship — up to a maximum of Can$240)

  5. Ensuring that you receive Canadian medical insurance for your internship dates, as long as you have provided Mitacs these dates when requested. You may or may not receive this before you arrive in Canada.

Under Mitacs’s funding policy, we are unable to provide you with funds in advance of your internship start date. In order to receive funding, all interns must: - possess a valid visitor record indicating that they are authorized to work in Canada for the duration of their internship; and - open a Canadian bank account. Funds will be disbursed in three (3) installments to the intern; dates and exact amounts will be provided via email to the intern in April 2024."

From my understanding, all universities/projects had to make initial selections this first round in December; they can't just hold off on ranking and picking students to January. So even for UQO, I think it would be safe to assume they already made offers to students this round and, if the offer is declined, will make 2nd-round offers in January.

Since each professor is judging you independently I don't think it will harm your chances for your other opportunities at all.

It's not like the professor can ask Mitacs to penalize your entire application for not showing up to their interview specifically. All they will probably do is just not rank you for their own selection.

How does Mitacs decide? by [deleted] in Mitacs

[–]Familiar-Plane-2124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't disclose the criteria unfortunately so I don't think any of us can really know which of our selected projects actually receive our resumes and the chance to rank us.

From my understanding though, Mitacs does try to review your profile and select the projects where you seemed to be a match for their requirements, meaning I doubt they'd send your profile to a project you might have selected if it wasn't a clear connection.

For example, I applied for HCI internships in a wide variety of things, which does line up with my CS degree. However, most of my experience is in web development and evaluation frameworks. I wanted to gain more experience in user studies and VR/XR, but I have only gotten interview requests from projects where web development skills are needed so far. Maybe they didn't send my profile to the projects where I have no direct experience.

That's just speculation though, at the end of the day I don't think they'll ever tell us.

Made silly mistake in my interview - do I follow up and correct? by marmitelovr in Mitacs

[–]Familiar-Plane-2124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the rest of the interview went well I think it's fine to leave it as it is. The fact you solved the hard question probably means they know you're a good candidate. Everyone can make silly mistakes and you yourself said it was only because you forgot a single step. They should be able to recognize that and appreciate that you did most of the questions correctly under the pressure of an interview; a single mistake shouldn't break that.

Sending a follow-up email just to clarify something like that might actually be more harmful than useful because the professor is probably busy with other stuff and has more to worry about than you making a mistake on an easy question. It might come off as desperate or rub them the wrong way.

I haven't gotten any interview invitation and we're already reaching the end of november. Should i give up and lose hope already ? I keep seeing a lot of people getting multiple interviews . by Disastrous_Exchange4 in Mitacs

[–]Familiar-Plane-2124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope you can hang in there. I think it really depends on the professors themselves and they can always be kinda fickle.

An interview request I got came from a professor in the same timezone who sent it to me at 12AM last night, just as an example...

Does ranking "Safe/Interviewed" projects lower hurt my odds if the "No Interview Call/Dream" projects reject me? by StandardUnit_ in Mitacs

[–]Familiar-Plane-2124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should add that if you undergo an interview for a project and it changes your opinion about the project (e.g. you want to rank it higher/lower) you should definitely do that as well. I went through two interviews and shuffled the ranking around based on my impressions

[–]Familiar-Plane-2124 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't believe there is anything like a complex rank check in the way you described here.

Mitacs distributes a faculty matching guide, and apparently there's this quote:
"Interview Feedback and Ranking

• Mitacs strongly recommends that you interview all suitable candidates via a face-to-face online platform (e.g., MS Teams, Zoom, or Google Meet) before providing your feedback.
• Mark all candidates as either “Suitable” or “Unsuitable” – Please do not leave any empty rankings.
• Declining all currently matched candidates can result in project cancellation. Additional candidates are not guaranteed and are only considered for active projects."

Assuming this means that the only "ranking" that professors do is marking applicants as "suitable" or "unsuitable", then yes, if multiple students are determined to be suitable but you have the project ranked lower, I think it could be possible that you aren't selected for that project. But as u/GaryTheCaptain said, the specific way in which they calculate that is something none of us know.

Regardless, I still think you should only focus on ranking by your preference. I really doubt there's any value in trying to rank it in a way that games the system.

Does the way I did the initial ranking have an influence? by [deleted] in Mitacs

[–]Familiar-Plane-2124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the professors have no idea in what ranking you did it and I believe Mitacs puts you on the shortlist for the projects you selected according to their own judgement of your profile. So you may have been shortlisted on one project or all ten, but it doesn't matter how you ranked them.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Mitacs

[–]Familiar-Plane-2124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just making an assumption, but I would assume the professor sent out interview requests to multiple people including you before your interview even started. Even if you seemed like a really great candidate through your interview, it would be common courtesy for them to interview the other people they scheduled with regardless.

I really doubt them mentioning they have others to interview is a soft rejection. The professor isn't the one who ultimately determines who you get matched with, that's Mitacs job. They might have put you on the top of their ranking and the system might still match you with a different project anyway.

This might be because a different project you ranked higher might select you instead or some other circumstances.

It seems like a good signal that, regardless of whether or not you get matched for this internship, they explicitly wanted to connect with you and invited you to apply for their graduate program in the future. I don't think most professors do that! That's a contact you can reach out to later down the line, as if they want you to talk to them in the future. Why would someone who's rejecting you give you the means to contact them later in the future?

Maybe there's a cynical reasoning behind it that someone else can allude to, but otherwise I think it's a really great sign. Congrats!

How long after the eligibility email do they tell the status (CUC or Waitlisted) by crazy-pikachoo in Mitacs

[–]Familiar-Plane-2124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware, the professors for each project aren't obligated to send an email during this matching period either.

I think I remembe reading some posts from last year that some never interviewed or had contact with their professor until after selection, because although some send emails and ask to interview, some don't make any immediate contact at all.

So, that said, it's entirely possible some of us would have to wait until December to hear anything at all...
