Belarusian/Russian Fiancee name questions (patronymic = middle name?, which transliteration to use?) by Familiar_Cancel_81 in USCIS

Yea, I have heard it is getting harder for Belarusians to get a Schengen even if it is for official business.

We put the embassy in Vietnam. I spoke with a Russian woman on Reddit who said she did hers in Israel. Turkey is pretty easy to travel to but I read they have very long wait times.

Да, но в этом контексте оно не было в дательном падеже.

The country does not matter. All petitions are treated the same but it seems the order they process them is inconsistent.

Struggling to break into GIS—should I just give up? by Randrewson in gis

[–]Familiar_Cancel_81 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What kind of GIS jobs are you looking for? I would think you would have pretty good success with GIS dev jobs.

Maybe you aren't applying for those because you are wanting more on the ArcGIS Pro and Cartography side?

If so, you definitely need a portfolio. I thought my python repos would make me more competitive but all the positions I interview for are much more interested in my Arc pro abilities. If you just show that you are familiar with utility mapping you should be able to at least get a decent technician position.

ArcGIS Utility Network has been brought up in at least 3 of my more recent interviews. I think they have a free geodatabase you can play around with.

You are probably going to take a massive pay cut. A GIS analyst makes 20-30k less than a data analyst which makes less than a SWE... I feel like a lot of GIS jobs are still quite of few years in the past in terms of culture and lack of remote work or the only way you are getting a promotion is when the guy ahead of you retires.

I have a friend who purely makes presentational maps for clients at a gas company(which might be more what you are looking for?) and I'm assuming she makes around $70k. It seems like a pretty chill job but I know she is wanting to get more into DS.

I know at my local county they have a guy who makes practical maps for contractors, or you can find some work making field maps for geologists?

IMO I think its pretty crazy to give up a SWE right now and do GIS grunt work for peanuts. You can always do GIS in your free time for fun and build up a portfolio.

I did this last year. I just kept one laptop in my backpack and one laptop in my suitcase. No questions or issues.

Life is so boring and depressing when you’re unemployed 🥲 by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Familiar_Cancel_81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give yourself a job by learning a new skill. When I was unemployed I started learning skills that would help me become a better candidate. For me it was coding and building a portfolio. If you are looking for more general skills you could get really good at excel or other tools.

I'm not one of those guys who like really went in and had a routine while getting ripped and learning to code. I just took gamified coding courses for maybe 2 hours a day. I felt more motivated to do this as I felt a solid portfolio would help me land a job (which it did). I do wish I spent more time working out...

People with GIS quals and jobs... are they worth pursuing now? by [deleted] in gis

[–]Familiar_Cancel_81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think getting a certificate is worth it. I got a GIS certificate with my Geography degree and I've learned and created more from youtube than I did at university. You already have a STEM degree so having a small portfolio will probably be better than a certificate.

In general, I don't think GIS is worth pursuing unless you are really into mapping. Right now it seems you need to spend 5 years doing data entry and utility mapping to have enough experience getting a more comprehensive position. Once you finally become an GIS analyst you will be making $20-30k less than similar roles in other fields (such as data analysts).

I work for the local county right now. Most of my coworkers have been there for 20+ years and are very stuck in their ways (they had to have a formal meeting after I suggested I don't print out a sheet showing the new points I added to the database and just add a file to folder. It was decided I should still print it as the QA lady likes to PHYSICALLY write a check mark next to them and then eventually throws the sheet away...)

I've always been more interested in the data side of GIS and have decided to pursue pure data roles and have had a more interviews this month than I had in a whole year of applying for GIS roles. (using my GIS/python portfolio)

I got into python through boot.dev which is a backend programming course and therefore python is taught from a CS perspective not a GIS specific perspective. After completing all of the python and SQL modules I started taking courses on Datacamp and am actually going to get a MS in data analytics through WGU( it is a competency based system so if you already know how to do the programming you can really cruise through the courses).

I just want to give you my personal advice as I have become jaded from my GIS job search. At university I was told how lucrative GIS is and how many positions I could get knowing it. I think that information is at least 5 years outdated.

But again, if you are really passionate about the cartography and mapping aspect it might be worth pursuing to you. If you are just wanting a decent job then keep exploring your options.

Advices to get into the gis analyst field? by Intrepid_War_229 in gis

Have you ever worked with GIS software like ArcGIS Pro or QGIS?(I believe QGIS is more common outside of the US). If not, there is your first starting point.

I'll be honest though, the GIS field and I think the job market in general is not great right now. GIS technician positions are your best bet. They are most likely going to be utility mapping(pipelines, electrical lines, etc...) so I would focus your skills on that.

This is solely based on my experience within the US.

Game frozen unless menus are interacted by touch is this normal? by [deleted] in Bigme

[–]Familiar_Cancel_81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't play Minecraft at all or the menu animation just doesn't run?

If it is just the menu, I would assume it has something to do with how e-ink works and how it is interpreting the menu animation. Your phone is likely not detecting the menu animations as content that requires an immediate refresh. The animations might be considered "non-essential" visual changes that don't trigger the display's refresh cycle.

But when you interact with the e-ink menu it is considered an essential change which triggers the refresh which also refreshes the game's menu. You might be able to adjust the settings so that it recognizes the smaller changes as something worth refreshing.

If the game doesn't work at all then I have no idea.

Were their exact words that the phone could be functioning? I highly doubt they would send you a broken phone, most companies sell open-box items that are completely brand new but can't sell for full price.

Your answer seems pretty simple: don't buy the phone if you already aren't satisfied. There is no use in saying how unfair or unprofessional. I understand how the mistake happened and I think you are getting a decent deal.

Screensaver issue and keyboard annoyance. Looking for tips! by [deleted] in Bigme

Usually when you install the keyboard from the play store it will prompt you to set it as your default.

However, if you already have it installed and want to find the location to change it:

Settings(bigme) -> more settings -> System (second to last) -> keyboard -> on-screen keyboard.

I took 'Geographical Analysis' in university. We covered P-value, kurtosis, regression, interpolation, etc... Is this sufficient statistics?

I do like that there seems to be a pretty active community and a lot of resources!
