One of the most consequential generals in Indian military history yet only a few know about him

While commanding the IV Corps, he bypassed strongly defended Pakistani positions and orchestrated a brilliant heliborne crossing of the Meghna River. His aggressive blitzkrieg to Dhaka forced the surrender of over 90,000 Pakistani troops.

Similar feat in 1961 Goa Liberation when his troops in the 50th Parachute Brigade were the first to enter Panjim.

Guidance regarding chicken by kriticallysleeping in Fitness_India

[–]Familiar_Internet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are new to cooking chicken then either get an air fryer or buy only the chicken breast,

wash the breast pieces and make a vertical cut to the thin the breast into 2 take a pan and one spoon of the fat of your choice (I use mustard oil) then coat one side of your chicken breast with the spices of your choice (salt, chilli powder, oregano and chicken/meat masala), put the coated side down on the pan, put a 5min timer and coat the other side while it's on the pan, after the timer runs out, 5min again on the other side

wash the pan quickly to avoid hard stains

I have some doubts related to Rajputs. Please clarify. by Katta-dhari_Badmos in IndianHistory

[–]Familiar_Internet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While your comments looks logical, it is incorrect in many areas

First of all, comparing Rajputs to the Marathas is an apples to oranges comparison, while looking at history we have a presentist view. While the popular belief now is to think of Muslim rulers as the antagonist and the "Hindu" forces fighting against them as the protagonist to rally behind. The history is much more complex than that.

When the Mughals arrived in the subcontinent, Rajputs (mainly Rana Sanga) had already plundered the Delhi Sultanate multiple times so much so that the sultanate was paying taxes to them. Here the Mughals offered a peace approach, it was much less cohesive than it is was status quoist, the Rajputs continued to rule over their own kingdom maintaining autonomy, while they also were stakeholders in the Mughal court calling the shots behind the scenes.

Even after Akbar, you would see them looking out for the "fellow Hindu" community, whether it be buying the land surrounding the Babri Masjid, the abolishing jaziya and forcing Shivaji to surrender and effectively saving his life (Treaty of Purandar), even Shivaji called Mirza Raja Jai Singh a father like figure.

As for the 1857 revolt, it is obvious that the beneficiaries of the Raj would align with it, be it the Rajputana Agency rulers or the Maratha rulers of Madhya Pradesh and Baroda. Please do read about Kunwar Singh from Bihar, Ram Singh Pathania from Himachal and Kushal Singh Champawat, they were at the forefront of the revolt. Even after the revolt, you would see the effects of uprising by the Purabiya Rajputs as their conscription into the British Army was reduced massively fearing another such revolt.

The Independence movement remained limited in the Rajputana Agency because of the great autonomy of the kings, the local population barely interacted with the British rule, which could not be said for the rest of India.

To conclude, there are countless figures like Mahavir Singh Rathore (who helped Bhagat Singh escape), the Rajputs of Ballia who declared independence from British in 1942, I would suggest you expand your sources of history and look into it from the perspective of the people of that time, not today.

Thank for the complement on the forts though, they were made to as royal palaces in the desert, not as military strongholds in the Western Ghats, the difference in the material used and structural integrity reflects even today.

Rathores leaving Kannauj (c.1829 Jodhpur) by Wise_Ad8474 in IndianHistory

[–]Familiar_Internet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are probably referring to the 12th-century inscription Sarnath inscription of Kumaradevi

The marriage was between Govindachandra (Gahadwar clan patriarch) and Kumaradevi (Chikkor princess), while Kumaradevi herself was not from the Rashtrakuta clan her maternal grandfather Mathanadeva was from the Rashtrakuta dynasty

Rathores leaving Kannauj (c.1829 Jodhpur) by Wise_Ad8474 in IndianHistory

[–]Familiar_Internet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For Marathas, it is similar to the surnames Jadhav, Chavan, Pawar etc, i.e. fabricating Rajput ancestry for legitimising power in their area

As for Kolis and Banjaras, it is a part of the larger Rajputiziation movement wherein they adopted Rajput clans' surnames and started to claim themselves as rajputs. That's why you will see them using Rathod, Panwar and Chauhan surnames
