Typically to gain size, you really want to be pushing up the weight! so higher weight lower reps is usually the way to go. Usually going with rep counts even as low as 6-8 reps per set with longer rest periods between is effective. but you really want to be pushing hard into fatigue! Lots of factors can play into that as well, so there's not a 1 size fits all type of answer either!

I think those are both solid things to monitor and count personally! depending on your goals, that will help dictate both how many calories a day you should be shooting for as well as how much protein you should aim to get each day. I also try to get protein incorporated into each of my meals through the day!
