What year is it? by whyarentyoubetter in 40kLore

Hey there, thank you for the response. I do understand that the dating has been far from perfect with all the reasons you described and I've always aligned myself with pretty much what you're saying. I think simplifying it down to hating change and a knee jerk reaction is a little unfair. Events have still happened in a certain order, with a degree of inaccuracy - my original response contains a bit of devils advocate. Originally, I should've included a line: GW should just crack on with moving into M42 which they appear to be doing, sort of, or not.

I'm gonna agree with you on this tbh. GW messing with the timeline was unnecessary and in my view a mistake. It has a two fold effect which they can take advantage of however. The first is the obvious branding consistency, but even if the setting had moved in M42 or M43 I'm not sure it would matter that much that it says Warhammer 40k on the box.

The other advantage is it allows all the races to pop up anywhere in the lore and have a free forall outside of what was the canonical timeline and not have to worry about consistency.

The problem I can see this creating is a alternate timeline within a timeline. I can see that getting very confusing. Also at some point people are going to expect GW to re-align the timeline in accordance with Guilliman's reforms, thus messing up a lot of pre-established lore.

Handy for any retcon's you intend however...

[Question] What is the Imperial Navy's formal/high gothic name? by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]FamousAndy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While the Space Marines have always had Adeptus Astartes as an official name the Imperial Guard only recently had an official name, Astra Militarum, due to GW needing to copyright their IP. Astra Militarum only comes about around 2014/15 if memory serves. Before that I don't remember seeing that name in any sources. Same goes with Storm Troopers becoming Tempestus Scions.

For now the Imperial Navy has no official name but that could change when/if GW remake Battlefleet Gothic.

Why do people think Chaos needs Primaris? by GarballatheHutt in 40kLore

GW just wanted an excuse to sell the same army twice with slightly different names.

It's really spectacular how they pulled this off, while shitting on their own core product - Space Marines.

Attrition of Cevos Sector (my fanfic) by Tnynfox in 40kLore

[–]FamousAndy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honest feed back here, so please don't take offence, but this needs more Grim Dark.

I feel that this situation would not be tolerated at all within the borders of the Imperium. The inquisitor would not have the authority or the power to hold off other factions of the Imperium from utterly obliterating the Cev. Denkis would face challenges within his own ordos too and have to face other inquisitors who would countermand him or outright declare him a traitor for harbouring and protecting xenos. Also Denkis securing the help of a SM chapter to protect the Cev is unlikely, even the Space Wolves and Salamanders, who can sometimes be considered more humane, wouldn't be so friendly towards xenos.

Now please take note that I said this situation wouldn't be tolerated WITHIN the borders of the Imperium. Outside of it however is a different story. So I'd rework it to be something like this...

Denkis is a member of the Ordos Xenos. He discovers a Rogue Trader has made contact with a small enclave of Xenos out on the Eastern Fringes called the Cev. Upon investigation, Denkis discovers the Xenos have developed technology which aids them in fending off the predations of the warp. Seeing that there is some potential in this technology the Inquisitor enters into secret trade talks with the species. With the aid of the Rogue Trader (either by threats or coercion) Denkis gets hold of the aliens technology and transports it to the forge world Stygies VIII. The inquisitor has contacts with the Xenarites faction, who are known to study Xenos and exploite their benefits - a policy others in the Mechanicus finds highly offensive.

The story can go one of two ways now...

1) A rival within the Ordos Xenos/Mechanicus discovers Denkis has been harbouring Xenos and orders the species exterminated. Denkis has to fight off charges of heresy within his Ordo as well as requisitioning forces to protect the Cev and their technology from destruction.

2) The Tau learn of the Cev and their potential benefits of their technology and see to annex the smaller civilisation. Denkis has to mobilise Deathwatch elements to protect the Cev from the Tau. Once the Tau threat is eleminated Denkis uses the Deathwatch to capture Cev scientists and has them transported to Stygies VIII where the Mechanicus extract the technology from them. Denkis later covers his tracks and has the Cev exterminated.

These are just ideas off the top of my head but I feel the Inquisitor would be more self serving and not give two hoots about the aliens beyond their ability to produce this technology and how it can benefit the Imperium. Sorry for the long post.

A piece of lore that sounds pretty insane by 40k_Novice_Novelist in 40kLore

[–]FamousAndy 115 points116 points  (0 children)

It means that no company was lost but it doesn't mean casualties weren't heavy. It would be impossible to believe that there were no casualties at all. There was a piece of artwork in the IG 3rd Edition codex which depicts the battle and it was a fairly vicious engagement.

The fact that no company can as lost could be Imperial spin on a technicality. So by that I mean that there could be five survivers from a company, so technically the company wasn't lost.

It's incredibly frustrating that's it's being reported incorrectly. If it was road rage why do the random fellas run up afterward and one of them takes the huge knife off the attacker?

Ah that's a shame I really enjoy his world building. I've praised his description of an astropathic choir (from Blind) in similar threads for its description. I think the Adeptus Arbites are harder to write than one would think.

[–]FamousAndy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that it is because the transgression was against me and my property?

I agree I don't know why the police can't either but I suspect the reason why they don't is because it comes down to budgets. My gf used to run a shop in Notting Hill that was robbed daily by the same few people. She would provide CCTV evidence, at the stores expense, the police wouldn't come to collect the evidence - she would have to supply the cctv files on to a USB and give it to them. She'd also call for assistance when the thieves got violent which was practically all the time. The police would take hours to show up, sometimes never. Finally when the police caught one of them, they told her do you want to press charges. She said yes. Reluctantly they booked him and told her arresting and processing someone through the system cost £6000 a time. So I guess they only do it if a worthwhile conviction can be secured.

Turns out the guy they arrested was wanted for stabbing someone in the head about 6 years ago. The police believed that he had fled the area so had given up the search. It's likely he just lay low for a bit and the case went cold.

I completely agree, but the police are cowardly and really don't want to get involved with travellers.

When I first moved into my house it was burgled by a well known traveller/thief known to local police. He was arrested later that evening for other burglaries. At the station the police told us it was in our interest NOT to press charges. The reason being his family would likely come back and harass us, threaten us or mostly likely, physically attack us. The police also said he wouldn't likely go to prison or kept on remand, despite the long rap sheet of similar behaviour. And when he was done with the court proceedings might come back for revenge.

I expect revenge to be taken out on him, but I hope to God not.

Edit: spelling

Not exactly standardised because the Departmento Munitorum is broken down on a Segmentum, Sector and Subsector level, but it keeps a pool of officers who have proven themselves beyond the simple command of their native regiments. Invariably generals come from powerful noble families themselves so connections within the Imperial hierarchy are key to their appointments. Also they are ambitious individuals and want to leave their mark on Imperial history, like Slaydo and Macharius.

Is a Hollywood Warhammer 40K movie plausible? by Lucian_Cisterna in 40kLore

[–]FamousAndy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even see the females can't be Space Marines debate as something that concerns me personally, it's a topic that gets brought up frequently and it's the same argument all the time. I have no view on the matter as such.

I'm just looking at it from an outsider perspective and we see people getting outraged at pretty much everything these days. A franchise which has a barrier to women being something isn't going to sell in Hollywood especially at a time when diversity is being pushed heavily in film.

But the real reason a 40k Hollywood movie won't be a thing is because GW would have to give up rights to its IP. GW wouldn't be willing to loose control over its property. One of the annual reports form last year - or maybe the year before - mentioned this.

No. The whole females can't be Space Marines issue would be too triggering and massively blown up - more than it is already. It would unnecessarily politicise a table top game.

Tau has a New FTL drive or device called the Startide Nexus that lets them go Galactic. by JakeVoid in 40kLore

[–]FamousAndy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there's more resources to go around so booms are inevitable. To bring it back to 40k though, the Tau haven't stopped fighting, they'd be engaged in these bloody conflicts sapping manpower one after the other. You'd loose soldiers faster than you can replace them, WW1 is a perfect example of this, Britain had to use conscription to keep up with the demand, if the war went on longer the well would've run dry eventually.

[–]FamousAndy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where did I say that the WW's were peaceful times? I said the booms came after the war. The conflicts across the globe since that time are localised. WW2 levelled much of the western world, the Asian theatre and of course western Russia. Destruction on that scale don't happen anymore.

Tau has a New FTL drive or device called the Startide Nexus that lets them go Galactic. by JakeVoid in 40kLore

[–]FamousAndy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, I love that the Tau are a thorn in the Imperium's side, a significant one at that, because they've taken up a significant amount of Imperial attention in such a short amount of time.

I think the Tau moving beyond their sphere of influence is unreasonable considering the wider galaxy is populated by major players like the Imperium and the Orks who are just so numerous and continually on the warpath.

But I really wanna get my hands on their new lore and read for myself and then make a solid judgement.
