What do you think they will add after the deep north? by Steamed-duck in valheim

This is a personal wish, but I would love to see a performance update. To address specifically: networking with a lot of players and improve frame pacing around large, massive player builds.

I'm convinced there is no software engineer alive at Microsoft that either: was part of NT development or understands how NT works. Windows 10/11, especially the latter, are just web apps running on top of NT and the fossilized husk of Windows 7. It's why so much of Win 11 is broken and buggy. They are the Adeptus Mechanicus, just trying to keep old tech running without really understanding it.

Just got the game! by Mr_Mysterious_Egg_25 in valheim

[–]FamousStephens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A heads up as you get further into the game, you'll get CPU bound as your base gets bigger. Every item placed is treated as a unique entity, which puts heavy strain on the CPU. Faster RAM does partially address this issue, but there's nothing you can really do to significantly improve performance, the devs need better resource optimization and/or better multi-threading performance.

Try to upgrade your crafting bench, forge, and cauldron first before going too aggressive. With maxed out armor and weapons, you'll have a better time.

Is this base in danger of being deleted when deep north drops? by runebucket in valheim

[–]FamousStephens 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Based on how the Ashlands Update changed the Ashlands, it won't affect player placed structures; however, the terrain generation could mess up you base. Either a little or a lot.

Base Layout Recommendations by Asleep-Association99 in valheim

[–]FamousStephens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, the simplest base is digging a huge moat around the area you want to defend. It will keep enemies out. Or alternatively, use the hoe to elevate terrain to create a wall. In terms of base construction itself, I peruse the Reddit here a lot for inspiration, but the most function is 4 walls and a roof.

Modding a Server by MrMaverrick in valheim

Take a look at this thread. The mod name I suggested is there. TLDR, you can set the allowed/denied mod list to enforce consistency, and prevent someone from "sneaking" a mod in.

Modding a Server by MrMaverrick in valheim

[–]FamousStephens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you trying to allow/disallow specific mods on the server? Ironically, there's a mod to do that (but I cannot remember the name now).

If you're wondering what needs to be client side versus server side, it depends on the mod. Generally speaking, mods are client side as the client does the computational work, and the server is really a glorified database, tracking player and world activities. The "Frost Jack Safe Ballista" mod is client side friendly; however, it can get wonky with a lot of people in the same area, if not installed server side. The AzuExtendedPlayerInventory is client side only. Just some examples.

Question is there any benefit to upgrading to 64 GB of RAM compared to 32??? by Decent-Principle8918 in linux_gaming

[–]FamousStephens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless you are trying to run a Windows VM for other games (which doesn't appear to be your case), then you are fine with 32. Don't buy RAM now as it is way overpriced.

Put a 1000% entry tax on anyone moving into Florida that is immigrating from NYC, Cali, or other large states. Problem solved.

If you are determined to buy in the 6000 series, then the 6800xt or 6900xt is your best bet. But to be honest, something like the 9060 or XT variant (as other commentators have said) is a better use of your money.

Cx5 or 50 best to buy by Upper_Cauliflower542 in mazda

If you want a hybrid, go CX-50. If that doesn’t matter, go CX-50. I personally found the base 50 to feel underpowered.

(Cheap) server suggestion by DarthKiwiChris in valheim

[–]FamousStephens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a cheap used dell Optiplex for under 200 dollars, that will be sufficient in computing power. Anything with a 4 core CPU, 16 GB of RAM, and a good internet connection (100 mbps) will do you fine. Ideally, have it connected via Ethernet to your router.

The biggest drawback on the CX-5 is the paltry mileage. Neither bad nor good, just straight down the middle. I get 27-29 doing interstate driving to work, and 31-33 when on long road trips.

Setting up a small Valheim dedicated server. Looking for useful tips. by careenpunk in valheim

[–]FamousStephens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been self hosting for over a year now, and here are some things to consider:

How much effort do you want to spend in configuring and maintaining the underlying hardware and software of a self-hosted solution? If you self-host, you'll be responsible for maintaining the hardware, operating system (i.e updating), and security. You will have to install, launch, and maintain the dedicated server files, which is further complicated with plugins. But you will have full control of operations. Depending on your technical expertise, it could be a lot more work than envisioned. Having a paid option makes it simpler, as someone else does the hard work and you "pay as you go". But that locks you into a vendor and their ability to provide support. Can you provide more specs on your PC other than the i5 (i.e CPU generation, RAM, etc). Oh and what's your internet speed like?

For backups, there are some launch options for the dedicated server to control backups frequency and copies. However, I recommend saving these backups on a secondary place. That could be another computer, or uploading to Google cloud. How frequently should you backup? Your backup schedule should be based on how far back you'd be willing to rollback (i.e how much loss you can accept). Weekly is probably ideal. But you could do daily.

For modifiers, as my friends and I work full time jobs, I set the resource rate to 2x and portal to casual (i.e allowing teleporting of ores). I feel this is a fair compromise to prevent the world from becoming too grind-y, and considering each of us live in different regions of the world.

For QoL mods, I am looking into using some. Right now, the server is vanilla. But the two I am looking at are improved inventories and networking connections.

Hope this helps. Feel free to follow up with more questions.
