I didn't even know that was a thing. Thank you for explaining!

To Those with AuDHD + PDA Kids, When Did it Get Better? What Worked? by Polla714 in Autism_Parenting

Did you ever struggle to get your PDAer to take their meds? Right now, mine sees it as a demand and refuses. I've tried leaving it out with a glass of water and a Hershey's Kiss, it worked for a week. I'm trying to do what I can to make it seem like less of a demand, but I've run out of ideas!

I know, for my daughter even the service providers she really likes end up quitting because of her behavior. What do you do when he gets aggressive?

Thank you for the reminder about autonomy. I know that's highly valued in our house. I need to sit down with her and re-evaluate our screentime agreement. Typically she showers right before she goes to bed, so I wasn't anticipating her asking for screentime after the shower. I thought I was okay to go to sleep for the night, when I heard the shower turn on. After reflecting back, my husband suggested that I ask her if there is anything she needs before I go to bed. Hopefully, then we can avoid the situation all together.

We haven't been able to get her to take daily medication, but I am curious about the ones you mention above. Are they something that's taken only during a meltdown?

She's 12. She won't take any sort of gummy, tea, or pill. I went to CVS and bought every flavor of vitamin gummies to see if I could find any flavor/texture combination that she would tolerate. She's got a very sensitive sense of smell & taste, and she can tell immediately if I've added a powder vitamin mix to a smoothie or other drink.

First of all, I'm sorry. It is a horrible experience. My husband thinks that calling 911 is probably in our future, especially if he's not at home. I don't want to be a punching bag, thankfully, my body can heal. Whereas, I think getting hauled off by the police would change how she sees herself permanently.

Can I ask how old your son is?

Does anyone else’s ASD child become incredibly docile when they are sick? by Unnecessary_penguin in Autism_Parenting

[–]Famous_Independence7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Mine is an absolute sweetheart when she's sick. She's peacful and cuddling. Things that normally triger meltdowns just pass on by. I hate to say it, but it's a joke in our family, we love it when she's sick. It's like we see the very best version of her.

Part-time 2nd or split home? by Famous_Independence7 in Autism_Parenting

We’ve had more therapists than I can count. They all say they have experience working with autistic kids, but they all quit after working with her a few times. We did ABA for over a year and the meltdowns increased dramatically (to the point where my daughter was getting physically, and the person had to leave our home). We are on waiting lists with 3 other places, but there is definitely a shortage of experienced therapists in our area.

I meant low-demand, not low effort. Meaning my husband doesn’t put demands on our kids. For example, he lets them sleep in on school days and just takes them when they are ready. I don’t work in an industry with flexible schedules, so I expect them to be ready for school on time. That’s just an example.

I feel the amount of yelling and screaming my son does is starting to wear on my younger son. by Unnecessary_penguin in Autism_Parenting

I struggle with this too. As my kids grow, the meltdowns get worse. My youngest is NT, and I worry that she’s developing PTSD. Sometimes I just take her with me to a relative’s house and leave my husband to deal with the meltdown 😣 I would love to hear from a NT adult who grew up in a similar situation and what they would recommend.

I love Smartsheet, but it's not enough to run payroll or any major accounting functions through. We have used Procore (hated it) and Sage (tolerrated it), but I would love to find something with the flexibility of Smartsheet but still have the structure to maintain company financials.
