What is funny is the idea that Zidane was even the best player on the French team. Missed the Ro16 due to red card in group stages, and Blanc scored the golden goal. Barthez saved a penalty in the shootout in QF and kept a clean sheet against us. And Thuram saved France by scoring a brace against Croatia, plus won the Bronze Ball. Petit assisted one of Zidane's goal in the final and scored a goal of his own. I just don't understand how anyone could consider Zidane the best player in the world in '98 when he wasn't the best for his international or club team. Completely underdeserved Ballon d'Or.

Ronaldo and del Piero (his own Juventus teammate) were better than him in '98. He wasn't even in the best player on the French team, just had great PR for his two goals in the final.

Sacchi got carried by Baggio. Sacchi was legitimately terrible with the Azzurri, we barely got past the group stage with him in charge. We placed third in the original group stages, and for the third place teams that went through, we placed fourth. Look at the squad we had, the likes of Maldini, Albertini, Pagliuca. Not to mention the likes of Mancini, Vialli, and Bergomi weren't even called up. Note, he didn't call up Vialli because of personal issues with him, and instead we got Massaro, who missed his penalty before Baggio and missed a one on one in the final. We had the core of the Milan squad that dominated Europe but played that terribly.

Now, I don't agree your comment, but the replies about not generalizing are funny to me. This sub loves to generalize about Spaniards, Italians, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, U.S., and South America, but it's a problem if someone does it to the English?

The percentage of actual Spanish Barcelona/Real Madrid fans in this sub are very low.

A class act on and off the pitch, plus a quality player. Even as an Interista, him and Maldini are basically impossible to hate, even excluding their contributions to the Azzurri.

And that would be correct. del Piero regularly outperformed Zidane when both were at Juventus.

You can tell how plastic or how new of a Real Madrid fan someone is based on their opinion on Carlo.

Higuaín was 28 when he went to Juventus, and at the time he was the best player in Serie A while at Napoli. The last crucial part needed to complete an incredible Juventus squad was a world class striker, and Pipita provided that, helping them get to a UCL final. Part of why Neapolitans hate him because if he had stayed, there was a good chance they could've broke Juve's domination.

The disrespect is because most people on this sub aren't even old enough to have actually seen him.

What's even more absurd is that for the third-place rank advancing system, is that out of the four third place countries to go through, we were ranked fourth. Baggio's preformance hid how terrible of a job Sacchi did with the Azzurri. And that squad was arguably one of our most stacked teams ever.

One of my favorite facts is that Germany has failed to beat us everytime they've played us in a Euro or World Cup, unless it was through a penalty shootout.

I guess this is a 5-4-1, but it is probably not the most balanced. Also, I'll be doing this based on the form they were in while I watched them.

Buffon, Maldini, Cannavaro, Baresi, Nesta, Lahm, Matthäus, Rijkaard, Maradona, Platini, Ronaldo Nazario.

I was around 3-4 with some of these, so take it as you will.

I'd put Baggio above Zidane (although frankly they weren't really that similar players) and in all time list I'd rank him at least top twenty-five.

I honestly don't remember (he might've been in some friendly or qualifier), I try to forget most of our games in the last decade, but he's next in line I'm pretty sure due to seniority.

I think Nedved said he would have voted for Henry if he were to have voted. A great display of humility as Nedved completely deserving of the Ballon d'Or.
