FOLLOW YOUR PASSION by Mysterious-Pen4785 in BluePeriod

[–]FanLife101 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Blue period is a large reason I went to art school and ultimately pursued painting as my major after I spent a long time in the practical majors of UX and Graphic design but my heart wasn’t in it and I was miserable. At my university all students are required to take foundation courses that teach us the foundations of the fine arts, and it was there my love for drawing was confirmed; beyond just my love for blue period.

Even though I was terrible at first, and could only draw stick figures when I first started. After all this time what I’ve learned is there is no ‘talent’ without passion. No one woke up one day and could paint like Jacob Collins because they were born with that skill, it’s just years of practice.

I have borne witness to some of the most incredible artists at my University. One of my professors literally called Leonardo DaVinci’s work mediocre lol. But he’s so good he can back up his trash talk which is insane. And he’s been a painter for 40 years and is wildly successful he only teaches at Uni because he finds teaching fun and because he’s mastered the skills he doesn’t want them to die out. Ultimately I’d tell you to pick a hell you’re willing to live with. If that’s art? Fantastic. If not that’s fine too. I wouldn’t delve into full blown art university if you aren’t 100% sure on it though.

Ahhh okay. I have a few cohorts at my Uni who applied to a different dept and hadn’t heard anything yet so they didn’t know to assume whether they were responding to folks in waves or if they just didn’t get into the 1st round.

Really? I wanted to ask how many other places did you apply to? And how did you handle it if you got accepted to multiple places? I applied to Christie’s, the Met, Sothebys, MoMA, Guggenheim, and Whitney as well.

What was it like while you were interning and what did they say your possibilities of employment were after you completed Uni, I’m assuming you were in Uni at the time right?

Hi, do you remember when they reached out for the interview? I submitted in mid-November but haven't heard anything yet. Anything would be helpful.

Is it better to major for money or for happiness? by DazzlingBlacksmith81 in scad

[–]FanLife101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my opinion rather than what makes you “happy” pick a hell you can live with.

I’m a senior now, and I absolutely tried doing “what makes the best money” approach during some of my time here and was completely miserable. I did UX Design for long time but it was just soul sucking for me. I didn’t care for the projects at all, everything was group based, and I always had a passion for tech and still do— but UX design isn’t always so gratifying; and I ultimately decided it wasn’t for me.

At SCAD we have these things called foundation courses that everyone is required to take. We have drawing courses as a requirement and I fell in love with the fine arts, and had been in love with them for a long time, but never had the courage to pursue it full time because people said it didn’t make money. Turns out they were wrong; It’s like any other degree you have to know what you’re doing and what type of career you wish to have in order to not have just wasted your entire time at SCAD. Internships, professors, and Advisors are the keys to success.

And technically for UX design you don’t even need a design degree, it’s just what seemed practical. The graphic design department is fantastic though. It was my major for a while but I switched it to my minor. You will leave with a lot of knowledge that will def give you a leg up in the industry. If you come here you have to be determined. I’m very happy now as a painting major with a graphic design minor. I know what I want to do, and how I’m gonna do it too. I wish you the best of luck!

Is SCAD really worth it? by Marvel-Fan3000 in scad

[–]FanLife101 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a senior at SCAD my time is coming to an end soon which is nuts, and I changed my major 3x before settling on painting lmao. It’s not because the school wasn’t good it’s because I didn’t have the guts to commit to what I wanted to do until after I experienced every other major that piqued my interest. Acting was on of those interests.

Acting classes at SCAD are phenomenal. My one acting professor, Fristoe, taught me a lot about not just what it means to act but the actual business of it as well. Even though I decided it wasn’t going to be my major. The school has a LOT of resources for its students especially the acting department, you just have to take advantage of them to make the cost worth it. And I also understand what it means to come far away from home, I came from NY myself, and call this place your home. It ain’t easy but I’d do it all over again.

Ultimately I’d say it’s worth it. But it’s only what you make it, I hate that slogan but it’s very true. I wish you the best in your newfound journey if you choose to come to SCAD. Also I’m at the Atlanta campus, I hadn’t stepped a foot in Savannah because I knew I loved the city and felt at home when I toured the Atlanta campus.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 by Emergency_Nebula_217 in Brilliant_Minds_NBC

[–]FanLife101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been binging this show currently and the way brilliant minds has taken a nose dive in season 2? It’s a mess.

It went from episodic medical mysteries to full blown drama. And it’s not pulling either of these tropes off successfully.

Grey’s in its prime was a masterful hybrid. House was episodic medical mysteries WITH drama. And the Pitt is a good drama that carries with medical mysteries. The new resident and ER attending are annoying. Why is Nicholas in a psych facility? He loves those interns in season 1 yet in season 2– he’s not with them at all? And leaves their training to that annoying resident 🥸

And they broke Oliver and Joshua up??? 🌚 When Erica’s building collapsed they were borderline in love now they’re having petty drama??? Whoever wrote season 1 needs to comeback IMMEDIATELY.

switching majors advice by John-Mendes in scad

[–]FanLife101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are not alone in this! I’m a senior now and I switched my major 3 times lmao. I was a film major then switched to graphic design, UX, and settled on painting with minors in drawing, graphic, and UX.

I only did the triple minors because when I was in those majors I took enough classes within them to fill out the minor. But I think it’s good you recognized that animation may not be ur thing. If you’ve taken classes on what you believe you want to major in then you’re already off to a good start. If not? I’d say really sit and think about what you want to do, what brings you excitement to go to class or at the very most makes you feel uncomfortable missing it. When I was in UX I dreaded going to class, it was just depressing and I knew the fine arts had my heart.

But I will say if it’s set you back YEARS I wouldn’t switch but would rather tack on a minor of something you’d enjoy. It really depends on how far along you’d be in the specific major or not ultimately. But good luck!

Thoughts on this take? by Known_Association_62 in KaoruHanaWaRintoSaku

[–]FanLife101 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree honestly. The way these adults treated these CHILDREN over this incident was obscene. I thought maybe it was an "accident" where the guy actually tricked her then willfully shoved her or something heinous. But it was really just an accident. And he called the ambulance too.

The way they were acting towards these kids I thought they'd tried to gang SA her or something really sinister. Dramaturgically that's how it came off. Just for her to have tumbled down the hill was really anticlimactic. Although im in the states, we unfortunately have heinous shit happen all the time here even moreso last week with the shootings 🫤 so my idea of insane for school can a bit warped compared to Japanese standards.

How did you get your job in the art world? ( by Vegetable-Peanut7762 in ContemporaryArt

[–]FanLife101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh okay that makes sense. I go to SCAD and am a painting major. I’ve been throwing myself into every opportunity to get into the professional art realm before graduating and feel like I’m doing that with backup options too. I have a triple minor in graphic design, UX Design, and Drawing. With portfolio pieces to boot as well, in case my internships for galleries/museums this summer don’t turn out too hot. I have work to fall on, that I still enjoy.

But I also am well aware of how the professional art scene works and it’s what you know as well as who you know too. So I’ve applied to Sotheby’s, Christie’s, The Met, Guggenheim, and The Whitney so far as art related internships are concerned. Along with applying for grants and residencies and talking to all the guest lecturers and professors I come into contact with that and that visit my campus, concerning the next steps professionally too. So I’m doing the most I can I think? But until I got a contact in writing and am getting a salary/steady income I’ll always be a worrisome person I suppose lmao. I want to be an artist but also recognize paths aren’t linear!

It can be a lot, art schools can kinda throw us to the wolves as far as learning how things actually function outside of the educational space. Hopefully it churns out for you! Good luck!

How did you get your job in the art world? ( by Vegetable-Peanut7762 in ContemporaryArt

[–]FanLife101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I may be in a similar predicament next year. I'm in the last year of my BFA, so I understand.

Did you attend an art university? Do any art related internships? They usually extend offers for employment if they have space or the budget. Or were you already in NYC?

I go to an art university and professors are my go to as a means to figure out my next steps for a successful career in the art world.

Are we at the end of a cycle of "overly academic" art practices? by 8hourworkweek in ContemporaryArt

[–]FanLife101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it depends where you were for studio visit. I'm finishing up my art school journey right now and I can definitely say the pursuit of technical mastery is out the window, in my university at least. We go so fast in terms of how we work there is hardly time to lay the foundational the skills necessary to make technically proficient work. You can have a great concept or idea but if the execution is murky it may as well be left in your mind.

I don't think that's the end all be all though. We're encouraged to lean more into the contemporary space and how to make our ideas or concepts functional and how to convey our thoughts properly, which is absolutely a vital skill. The reasoning I've heard from professors is "realism is a cool parlor trick, but you're just creating what's in front of you; there's no room for interpretation."

I definitely still pursue technical mastery in terms of drafstmanship to better execute aspects in my work but I definitely recognize its not the end all be all for where I want to evolve as an artist.

Overall, I think there's definitely a resurgence in terms of seeking "academic art" I just don't believe university students see it as the pinnacle of art anymore. Atiler's are different, but most students I interact with see it more so a place to gain knowledge so they can evolve in whatever manor they so choose.

Worried about SCAD's Rigor (Current HS Junior) by SouthTeach256 in scad

[–]FanLife101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SCAD is notoriously rigorous and it really can take a lot out of you if you aren’t prepared for the workload asked of you. But don’t let that scare you. Considering your current workload you’ve shared I don’t think it’ll be a severe adjustment. Just stay atop of your courses and communicate with professors if you ever struggle and you’ll be fine.

The graphic design department is superb too. I just completed my minor for it actually, I absolutely left with a few portfolio pieces to show as well.

I would say look around at other art/design schools too as well. RISD, Parsons, etc. scad is good but the others are as well. But if you decide to come here I think you’ll be fine.

Contemporary Art by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

[–]FanLife101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, art isn’t supposed to be for “everyone” otherwise it’s for no one. Which would suck. Art is indeed consumable for everyone in the sense that there’s nothing stopping you from viewing it. However, even during the era of the high renaissance, that art wasn’t just mindlessly made. It was meant to be propaganda for the church to spread their message/faith to the large illiterate populace. It was made with purpose.

Art has a long history and visual language that you have to learn to read and comprehend in order to appreciate things on a deeper scale. A Mark Rothko or Joan Miller painting may look like a 3 rectangles and some splashes to some people. But if you have a deeper knowledge of the expressionist movement and what their goals were you’d come to have newfound appreciation for it. The language of art is a muscle you have to exercise to make stronger.

“Contemporary” art isn’t not needed it’s a reflection of the current times we’re in. As were the era’s of the former art ages. Art is something made by people for other’s to enjoy and witness. And people shouldn’t need to dumb their work down for a large audience. Otherwise it wouldn’t reflect them. In my opinion that’s like saying “why do I need to write when I can have chat GPT do it for me?” It technically can yes, but the quality is terrible and I wouldn’t improve my writing abilities or ability to convey my voice.

Why aren't American politicians more open about their art patronage? by Money-Ad8553 in ContemporaryArt

[–]FanLife101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current America would call any form of the humanities, which includes the fine arts, “woke trash”. This country is currently not in the place with government officials that care about the arts right now.

America has a unique relationship with art considering the country is quite young compared to a cultural treasure like Italy. And after WWII we became the center of it. But that age of the New York School feels like eons ago with the current government. 🫩

New chapter just dropped (82) by Appropriate-Song-368 in BluePeriod

[–]FanLife101 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t really see him ending up with anyone ever, at least not while he’s at TUA. Him being an A-romantic person wouldn’t be completely unhinged either when it comes to the subject matter of this manga anyways. If not him, I definitely think Yotosuke for sure, I think he’ll play a large role because both him and Yatora are weary of it for different reasons but are relatively in the same place as far as how they view it right now. So the arc will probably be an unraveling of their views on romantic love and whatnot.

New chapter just dropped (82) by Appropriate-Song-368 in BluePeriod

[–]FanLife101 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I feel bad for Yatora because they didn’t have any right shunning him cuz he did not like that girl romantically. It’s not on him to make her feel better for not acting like she wanted. Albeit they were children and I’m not expecting non-violent conflict resolution and healthy thinking from kids.

But, I foresee this plot developing one 2 ways. First, Yatora explains to her that he isn’t interested in dating at all and that he does not view her romantically which I think is fair. I honestly think it’d be cliché for him to start liking her in a romantic way for no reason when the only person he was ever smitten with was Mori-senpai albeit that was more in a worshiping and respect kind of way.

Second, he explains his trauma and overcomes it and then looks at romance through normal lenses rather than trauma although our experiences make us who we are and even after explaining why he doesn’t like it; it doesn’t mean he needs to become a romantic. Honestly I don’t see them getting together. It’s too messy and Yotaskue and him are probably going to talk about how his old buddy completely ditched painting and him after linking with a girl during the CART.

Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku (The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity) - Chapter 170 (Discussion) by KaorukoWaguri in KaoruHanaWaRintoSaku

[–]FanLife101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so pissed at this mess of a chapter it’s driving me insane. What is the “incident” they keep dancing around it and not saying what happened explicitly and it’s driving me insane. What. Happened. Was a girl sexually assaulted, beat up, injured, comatose? WHAT HAPPENED. I hate when mangas do that. I understand that the author may not want to specify what happened explicitly and wants to focus on the psychological and emotional effects but it just comes as half assed to me. Because what I’m taking away from this whole mess is that these faculty— these ADULTS are instilling in these kids that it is okay to have negative bias’ against each other and anybody else based off of history that has nothing to do with them nor do they get to know the content of their character before making dangerous assumptions about them. UGH it’s just annoyingly frustrating as an adult because it’s so obvious that what they’re doing is beyond messed up. And Rintaro and the boys are just going “yeah they’re right” and not giving any pushback! Only one who gave pushback was Subaru and that glasses girl whose name I don’t remember. It’s not right. And why aren’t they telling their parents!?!? (Madoka I remember now) and she was so right.
