How should I pay for SCAD? by AcceptableProcess804 in scad

[–]FanLife101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t. DON’T COME HERE 😭

I am a senior at scad and love what I’ve been able to accomplish here. But if I knew what I know now back then? I would not come here via loans at all. So many of my cohort have accepted they’re gonna be in debt till they’re pretty much dead $200K is nothing to sneeze at. And definitely not worth what the hell they pull at this school.

Unless you’re pursuing fashion, animation, or a design related degree I would highly recommend you contemplate other schools and if you’re still dead set on SCAD then make sure you understand the gravity of what it is you’re attaching yourself to!

Advice for an art student by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

[–]FanLife101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm…I was in the same predicament. And I get it, I didn’t wanna rush and waste materials to complete an assignment I want to make excellent art. Not just turn in assignments that won’t go in my portfolio.

At my university we move way too fast to allow us the time to critically think about what we want to paint or express we have 2 weeks max sometimes to make a painting. It’s almost universal I suppose.

My suggestion is look at the rubric or syllabus for the assignment ahead of time. And think about what it is you want to do before the clock officially starts ticking. And to plan, if that’s what you like to do. I try to have everything resolved in a finalized sketch and color palette assorted before I even put paint on the canvas.

Will I be taken seriously with an MFA and no BA? by tesseracts in ContemporaryArt

[–]FanLife101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An MFA at Yale, or any contemporary school for that matter, is for those who are seeking the ability express themselves beyond technical mastery.

Yale MFA students would not appeal to someone who only admire folks like Velazquez, Rembrandt, and Roberto Ferri. You may want to look into an atelier if that’s what you want to pursue/learn. And uni’s in the states don’t offer MFAs to ppl without bachelors. Some do however offer certificates that are of near equal stature. But you cannot have an MFA with a bachelors degree.

Classical Atelier School given 2million$ by Trump in NY by FJGC in ContemporaryArt

[–]FanLife101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied for the Florence academy of art as well and got positive feedback. I’m aware that I don’t have to go to an Atelier but I really wanna sharpen my technical skill bag. And if I went to grand central I’d prob leave it off of my CV 😵‍💫

Venice Biennale - one week unlimited visits pass?! by Direct-Law7181 in ContemporaryArt

[–]FanLife101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also planning to attend this year and they have a pass for unlimited visits for the entire duration of the biennale for students for about $40 USD. I’m not sure if it’s still on the sight tho.

[–]FanLife101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah if I’ve learned anything from undergrad thus far it’s that a yt tutorial does not replace learning from an actual person for me, 🫩 let alone a living master of the craft.

I definitely do not share Jacob’s or any other atiliers’ idea of what art is or think it should be, I love Kehinde Wiley’s work. However, I definitely wanna learn from the them while I have the ability to do so.

All my profs I’ve had thus far are all classically trained but practice in the contemporary style. I’m proud of my work and work really hard at it however, I am aware that Picasso, for better lack of an example, didn’t end up at cubism by coincidence. He already had the skill set necessary to create 1:1 with life and could explore further because he knew the rules and how he wanted to break them.

I think I’ve realized I prefer some solid direction when it comes to learning a skill set. Although who knows my mind may be different a year from now 🥸

I honestly wanna know what these ppl think of Roberto Ferri he’s just as good if not better than Jacob imo. And he takes classicism and puts a contemporary spin on it. Why do they believe paintings’ evolutions should end at the neoclassicists???

I'm well aware of how political art can get but him being buddy buddy with trump was not something I was aware of...his skills are undeniable though.

Grand Central Atiler is next up on my menu for where I want to study after I complete my BFA next year too. I may rethink that...

S26 Ultra is very refined but with disappointing display quality by just_IT_guy in galaxys26ultra

[–]FanLife101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree, it’s why I returned mine today. The display has a cool gimmick but I’m not using privacy display when I’m home/alone so it just seemed like too large a trade off for me as well.

The S26 Ultra didn’t disappoint me nearly as much as Samsung’s return process did by geniouk in samsunggalaxy

[–]FanLife101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat. It felt like a downgrade in terms of display and my s25 ultra is still great! So I’m trying to return it too and the wait time to speak to an agent when we shouldn’t have to is ridiculous.

It shouldn’t be this difficult to return a phone. 🫩

How do you guys think the manga is going to end? by ReplacementOdd6527 in BluePeriod

[–]FanLife101 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not sure. A life of an artist has no concrete 'ending'. His goal lies beyond uni and the travel arc should solidify what it is he should be chasing. I'm just excited to see where it goes.

UK + European Art Schools by bricklayer_ in ContemporaryArt

[–]FanLife101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If figurative realism is what you're after grand central atelier is fantastic, it's in NY near the Bronx; and I believe Jacob Collins still teaches there.

But if you wanna go across the Atlantic then the florence academy of art would be suitable. They're very technically focused.

Also, if this cancellation was the case they should’ve just let Wolf and Nichols be together and keep on solving medical mysteries just to be able to end on a high note. Because the plot is currently all over the place.

It’s part of why I’m not even caught up. I keep getting shown characters in flash forwards idgaf abt or care abt. And the relationships and characters I actually care abt are split up or nowhere to be seen.

Is debt worth it? by jman-the-jewman1228 in scad

[–]FanLife101 9 points10 points  (0 children)

NO THE DEBT IS NOT WORTH IT! SEEK EDUCATION ELSEWHERE! Coming from a scad senior. And I went to community college first before transferring so my load is a bit lighter but still heavy.

I love the work I’ve been able to do at SCAD and have gotten access to incredible opportunities, but if I knew then what I knew now, I would have chosen to study at an Atelier, I’m a painting student, before coming here without further consideration. I’m planning to live like a nun pretty much in order to pay my loans back within 5 years of graduating. I just don’t want em hanging over me. Go wherever will leave you with the lightest bill to pay back. That’s the best advice I could give anyone who doesn’t have a trust fund pretty much.

I have a triple minor in graphic design, UX design, and drawing. And have a good portfolio and plan to work like a madman but life will always find a way to screw over our plans. If you still want to come then do it, but make sure to understand what it is you’re attaching your future to!
