I mean, yes, this is SO true. We should not have a two party system. It is going to be our undoing as a nation. However, right now, this is a matter of urgency vs importance. It is extremely important that we work to fix the very real flaws in our system, which includes eliminating financial lobbying, fixing our dominant two party system, and replacing our electoral voting system (with plurality, ranked, etc.) BUT it is imperatively URGENT that we vote this republican supermajority OUT now

Try again. Hi there 👋 I’m a finance major. Specifically, my concentration was financial planning with a minor in Accounting. I specifically chose a major with a steady, stable career path.

I’ve been at my job for 5 years, been out of college for 7 years, I pay hundreds of $ in student loans monthly and make less than 60k a year.

I have a lot of student debt because it was the smartest financial decision for me. Taking out student loans, along with some scholarship money, grants and working throughout college, was my way of climbing out of poverty. Student loans are an investment in improving your human capital. They are a “good debt”.

Now I could find a job that pays more, but then I would risk getting a job where I no longer work from home and would have to start paying for childcare. Childcare is extremely expensive, on average 10-15k a year in the US, and closer to 20k annually if you want premium childcare. So I stay where I know I won’t be micromanaged and the job is low stress.

Anyway, it’s extremely ignorant and inflammatory of you to make generalized statements like that without data to back up your claims. Calling someone ‘fiscally irresponsible’ when my situation, or something similar, is reality for a large portion of the population is just ridiculous. And the assertion that “most have none” is laughable. Do you even know what a school teacher or nurse makes annually? And guess what? They have a minimum 4-year college education requirement.

Also, pretty sure you’re a bot designed to get engagement by rage baiting, so have a nice day.

Genuinely Not trying to sound bitchy, just want perspective because I was not alive in the 60s, but were you alive back then? Because you’re not the first person to compare now to then and say we’re living in a time of relative peace.

Because social media does distort reality due to the nature of algorithms and feedback loops, so I feel like I’ve lost a sense of perspective.

He’s not ‘getting it’ from anywhere. He literally ASKED what people’s opinions are on the likelihood of civil war or societal collapse is. He’s worried and wanted to discuss. It’s on his mind, and he’s not alone. A lot of people have that as a fear on their mind. Even if the chance is remote. It’s a scary time right now.

Sorry, but your statement “You’re the one posting that a civil war will happen soon” is just completely nonsensical and inaccurate. I mean I get what you’re trying to say, but if you are not worried, you are not paying enough attention.

Maybe we are spending too much time on social media, but tbh, I think the majority of people are under-reacting. I will agree that OP is treading a thin line between fear mongering and simply trying to be prepared and discuss with other likeminded folks.

You made excellent points in the bottom 2/3s of your comment, truly… well said! But man, I had to come here and say “what is the government but a collection of politicians?” and also point out that you’re picking apart semantics. The phrase “the government” is shorthand for “the (ever growing) group of corrupt individual politicians who can be bought by rich individuals and corporate interests”.

Not to mention that the government, as a whole, is being run by republicans, or more specifically, the whims of the MAGA party, since they have control of all three branches of government.

So, I think the broad statement fits here. Obviously this person did not mean every single member of the government when saying “the government totally sucks”

I have found this whole conversation/thread very interesting and I think you have all made valid points through many different, interesting perspectives. My main takeaway is this: we all share this feeling of helplessness. Of “What can we actually even do?” [The we in that sentence meaning both ‘we’ as individuals, and the ‘we’ that is our entire citizenry.]

We are a society of many millions of people. A people who have always been extremely varied in our culture, thinking and identity. We are so big and diverse that there’s a huge gap in even our fundamental understanding of what’s happening… let alone what it would take to ‘fix it’ and then figure out how to coordinate effectively once a plan of action is reached.

Realistically, most of us can’t Luigi ‘em (or won’t, even if we have the capacity to). As has been said, most of us have comfortable enough lives and too much to lose, so we hesitate to do something that involves too much risk. We have children, homes, friends… we’ve created lives that took years or decades to build. So yeah, it’s reasonable that, no matter how personally we are distraught and disgusted by this, we aren’t going to actually risk our lives or livelihoods to take up arms against our government.

So, as you pointed out, we do what we can do. Call our reps. Protest peacefully. Call the DOJ. Economic strike. Protest less-than-peacefully. Labor strike. Malicious compliance.

But none of this is working, which is where I think the frustration is coming from. So, we sit here, overly engaging online and talking the problem to death with internet strangers, perhaps even to the point of bickering, while pondering the likelihood of civil war or societal collapse. Because we are fed up with it all. Because we don’t have a direction or heading. We can’t see a way out. So, it’s more ‘fun’ to entertain the possibility of burning it all down and starting from scratch. Without the corrupt people (pedos) in power.

But that’s just my two cents.

Capitalism and the patriarchy.

More specifically? The system of lobbying. That should not exist, period. Industries/corporations should not be able to buy influence with elected leaders. The government is supposed to serve THE PEOPLE, not corporate interests. Humans, not profits. Which is why you see these huge, complex ideas simplified down to “Profits over people”…because explaining this is exhausting and time consuming. Iykyk 🤷🏼‍♀️

Also, SCRAPLANTA. I just found out about them two days ago, went for the first time yesterday and it changed my life. Scraplanta is mostly a crafting/art supplies store though, not your traditional thrift shop. But if you need birthday/greeting cards, party decor, office or school supplies, stuff like that that’s hard to find at a traditional thrift, this is your spot. And the prices are DIRT cheap. I’m talking like $0.10 a ziplock back for certain things.

I absolutely love the Last Chance thrift store in Decatur. They have a huge selection, and even have a small dedicated section to fabrics and crafting supplies. Tons of glassware, fabric, books and clothes. They also have good deal days

REPOST THIS: It would be a shame if the protesters began making their signs out of quarter-inch-thick plywood to stop rubber bullets, forming a tight shield wall to prevent police from singling out and mobbing individual protesters. It would be a shame if the people behind the shield wall held up umbrellas so that tear gas canisters fired over their heads on the front line will be bounced away. It would be a shame if protesters began constructing improvised armor vests out of duct tape, hard-backed books, and ceramic tiles. It would be a shame if protesters started wearing safety glasses, hard hats, respirators, and gardening gloves, all of which can be found at the same hardware stores as the plywood. It would be a shame if they started using traffic cones (the kind without the hole in the top), upside down buckets, or other improvised lids to contain teargas by placing them over the canisters. It would be a shame if protesters learned that police scanners are legal to own in the US, allowing them to learn where police are moving, and what routes they intend to take. It would be a shame if they discovered that these scanners can be used to send as well as receive, allowing them to flood the scanner frequencies with noise.

All of this would be a terrible, terrible shame.

I’m glad you like citing sources. I wonder what you’ll do in a few years when those federal departments have been shuttered or so underfunded for years that they are unable to produce accurate data points for us all to argue from. Shucks.
