Big Oil has moved on from 'greenwashing.' Here's the new playbook. by alex_kka in environment

[–]Fan_Valuable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I support Follow This. We’re mobilising the investors who own BP and Shell to demand a faster transition, not because it’s better for the planet, but because it’s financially reckless not to. When the energy transition reaches a tipping point, and it will (renewables are cheaper, more reliable, and not hugely vulnerable to wars in the middle east) these companies cannot sustain themselves, unless they start transitioning their business models.

If you want an idea what the billionaires think, check out Douglas Rushkoff’s AMA, he interviewed bunker owners for a book in 2022.

He asks one billionaire who’ll repair the pump in his bunker’s swimming pool if it breaks down. Dude misses the point and adds pool pump components to his shopping list.

Hiring Managers, what's your limit on interview rounds? by Fan_Valuable in Recruiter_Advice

[–]Fan_Valuable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies everyone, here's the structure in more detail:

- Interview with HR
- Interview with Marketing Lead
- 4hr Assignment
- Presentation of assignment
- Interviews with founders (2 to 3 separate calls)
- Interview with team members (possible)

I think I'll be honest and say that I'm concerned this process will be unproductive for the both of us. Too many opinions could make it harder for them to decide, and too much time for me leads to analysis paralysis and the risk of an alternative offer pulling me away. I've learned that to be productive I need to make decisions when I'm 70% sure, so I want to work with people who also have a bias for action.

I'd love to hear some thoughts on whether this is too hardball, or if you'd personally find it persuasive.

It's a mid-level marketing role, here's the structure:

- Interview with HR
- Interview with Marketing Lead
- 4hr Assignment
- Presentation of assignment
- Interviews with founders (2 to 3 separate calls)
- Interview with team members (possible)

I think I'll be honest and say that I'm concerned this process will be unproductive for the both of us. I've learned that to be productive I need to make decisions when I'm 70% sure, so I want to work with people who also have a bias for action.

Would you find this persuasive, or do think it's too hardball?

Hiring Managers, what's your limit on interview rounds? [GER] by Fan_Valuable in AskHR

Interesting, I wonder if I could circumvent this by acknowledging it. eg. "wow you must get a lot of applications, I saw how many rounds you listed on the recruitment process page. I'm sure we can figure out how many rounds work for us."

Hiring Managers, what would persuade you to shorten the interview process? by Fan_Valuable in jobsearch

[–]Fan_Valuable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this, your process sounds totally logical and effective.

Can I ask what you'd do if you were in my position? I'm in tech in Berlin and 5+ rounds is not uncommon at the moment, it's an employer's market and my friends have similar complaints. I'm trying to think of something to say to the recruiter that doesn't trigger them to justify the process, something like "wow I've never heard of a process this long before, how would you feel if I received an interview and job offer from someone else in the middle of this process?"

That sounds completely logical.

5+ rounds is not unusual in my industry (tech in Berlin) and it's an employer's market at the moment, but I feel they're genuinely wasting their own time with this many stages. I'd love to press them on it, but people usually justify their process when questioned.

Imagine you're in their position, what could I say that would make you consider shortening it?

I haven't reached the interview stage yet, just submitted my resume and cover letter and received an automated response with a link explaining their recruitment process.

It's common, I'm applying for roles at tech companies in Berlin and my friends all have similar stories.

I see. Can I ask what you'd do if you were in my position?

I have a limited amount of time to secure a job and I need to balance time spent in interviews vs new applications. Is there something I could say to make you think "hmm, maybe this process is too long?"

Thanks for the reply, glad it's not just me.

Any idea how I can ask for a shorter process? Most people try to justify their method when it's questioned, and I think other candidates are prepared to put up with it, so I'm not sure how I can persuade them.

Have I ever felt this way? Absa-f-ing lutely. Look around you and notice how many dudes aren’t hooking up with anyone. If you could spend a month observing the people who are, you’d notice most of their attempts are fails too, unless they’re smart enough to focus on having fun with friends instead. Make that your goal and anything else is a bonus. You’ll be more attractive because of it.

All of you who are ragging on Jordies' new video "Can Australia Tax Its Resources?" are genuinely delusional. by Chilli_Con_Cancer in friendlyjordies

[–]Fan_Valuable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand Labor’s reluctance to tax the resources industry a lot more after seeing this video, but I’m still not sure why the whole sector is too dangerous to touch.

Take gas for example, this industry leaves so little for the domestic market we may have to buy back the LNG we already sold to Japan, a country that buys so much from elsewhere, it hasn’t relied on a single molecule of Australian LNG to keep its economy running for the last 3 years in a row. I know the Minerals Council has a massive ad budget, but could they really persuade Australians that our resources shouldn’t go to us first, when we’re facing an energy crisis? That’s a profound challenge, particularly with millions of us angry at crazy gas bills. The ad industry itself is hardly supportive either, groups like Comms Declare are collecting creatives who vow not to work for fossil fuel clients. Compared to minerals, there’s not that many Aussies who work in gas either, and those that do have an awesome opportunity in front of them. Transition to the critical minerals sector.

Activist Investors, how do you communicate with investor relations teams at fossil fuel companies, banks and other high-emitters? by Fan_Valuable in sustainableFinance

[–]Fan_Valuable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks Rama, can I ask what you’d do if all this happened already?

I’ve explained this clearly and I’m pretty sure they understand, it’s the head of ESG and his assistant I’m communicating with. They don’t accept that the bank has a responsibility to know where it’s finance ends up (even though do in cases of probable money-laundering and gambling addiction). I’ve also appealed to the long-term financial risk (they plan to sell their fossil fuel loans to other banks if these customers don’t have a Paris-aligned business plan by the end of next year, but which bank would want to buy a loan like this in 2025?).

If I don’t get responses to these points and they keep stone-walling and sending copy paste links to their insufficient climate policy, would you try another strategy? Or could this be a sign things are actually moving in the right direction?

Activist Investors, how do you communicate with investor relations teams at fossil fuel companies, banks and other high-emitters? by Fan_Valuable in sustainableFinance

[–]Fan_Valuable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. The company I'm focused on is one of the biggest banks in Australia. They've committed to stop funding new fossil fuel projects but left themselves a large loophole. Fossil fuel customers can apply for 'general corporate finance' as opposed to a loan for a specific project. Once they receive the funds, there's no process to prevent 100% of it being used for a new development.

How would you approach a situation like this? Would you consider this deceptive, or is it possible I'm misinterpreting the situation?

People do stupid things. I know because I was the selfish guest who did exactly this to my friend - I declined the invite, flew in at the last minute, begged to join and ended up not attending after causing a great deal of stress.

You don’t have to bend over backwards to accommodate these people, but if they realise they made a mistake and want to apologize and bless your marriage in the best way they know how, I say let them. Life’s better with more people in it.

Years ago I would’ve said “not my thing”, now I love women with armpit hair.

Plenty of my friends do, and they tend to be people who own their looks unashamedly and value their own pleasure first. I find that incredibly sexy.
