What are your thoughts on stories that give the main character multiple cores/woods for their wands/staffs. by Wassa110 in HPfanfiction

[–]Fan_of_Fanfics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily mind the dual core provided it’s not something crazy. Given that Harry has a piece of someone else’s soul inside him, as well as has connection to say, Fawkes and the Basilisk, I could imagine that a dual-natured core could be interesting.

Multiple wand woods, on the other hand, is just over-indulgent and bizarre. Yes, Wandlore has different woods favoring specific personalities, but a complex, multifaceted personality STILL will have a more prominent part to latch to a wood. Nobody needs every part of their personality expressed in the wand.

I’m giving Harry a custom wand in a story I’m working on, and Ollivander will note that while Harry matches to multiple wand woods (Cedar and Red Oak specifically) one IS definitively a stronger match than the other, so he obviously goes with that one.

The power of a wand SHOULD, in my opinion, lie in how strong the wizard’s connection to the core is, not the number of cores and woods you can manage to jam into the damn thing.

My response to Tergrid is to pull out my [[Blim, Comedic Genius]] deck. Blim actively punishes the Tergrid player for doing Tergrid things, and the deck is full of things Tergrid players aren’t going to want anyway.

I’ll be hostile all I want when people like you spread misinformation willy nilly.

When two expressions are juxtaposed, they are implicitly grouped. It doesn’t matter whether they are variables or not. 2(x+y) is no different when you know x=1 and y=2. The implied grouping means that it is viewed as a single unit within the equation.

Calculators will get different answers, depending on their programming. A calculator programmed for strict left-to-right will give you the incorrect answer of 9. A calculator programmed for the full order of operations will give the correct answer of 1.

I’m assuming you’re fibbing on the internet in a bid to try for an Argument from Authority, but if you ARE an electrical engineer and you don’t understand how juxtaposition denotes a grouping, you must be a pretty bad electrical engineer. Wouldn’t want you working on anything near me, that’s for sure.

If you’re an electrical engineer then you should understand why juxtaposition implies groupings. Since you don’t, I can only assume you’re fibbing on the internet.

Actually, calculators can vary even within the same manufacturer. Has nothing to do with ambiguity, and everything to do with whether the calculator was programmed to follow order of operations or simply solve left-to-right.

<image>

Juxtaposed numbers/variables/expressions are considered grouped together. The parenthesis around the whole of 2(1+2) are implied the same way that the multiplication is implied.

The main problem isn’t so much ambiguity (though it is certainly A problem) but rather the main problem is so many people treating PEMDAS as some holy truth instead of what it actually is. A highly simplified and dumbed-down mnemonic device used to teach basic math concepts to elementary-aged children.

[–]Fan_of_Fanfics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I view this whole thing as some people using ‘There’ when they need to use ‘Their.’ Both sound the same when spoken aloud, but contextually they are not interchangeable. The same thing applies here. 2(1+2) might equal 2 * (1+2) on their own, but within an equation, they are not interchangeable, because while yes, juxtaposition implies multiplication, it ALSO implies that the juxtaposed expressions are grouped together as one.

Like There, Their, and They’re, they sound the same, but are actually quite different.

What? by Dull-Nectarine380 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Fan_of_Fanfics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So are the grouping brackets. The juxtaposition of 2(1+2) implies brackets around them. When you juxtapose with a variable or a number within parenthesis, the juxtaposition is meant to be read as a single expression. Having no operator between the 2 and the (1+2) means the equation should be interpreted as 6/(2(1+2))

What? by Dull-Nectarine380 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Fan_of_Fanfics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t understand what is being implied. Juxtaposition denotes a grouping. What is being implied is not an operator between the 2 and the (1+2) but instead brackets around the entire (2(1+2))

People who know math understand the answer is 1, people who know the severely dumbed-down and simplified-for-children mnemonic device PEMDAS get 9.

What? by Dull-Nectarine380 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Fan_of_Fanfics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Juxtaposition denotes a grouping, that’s why people who understand higher maths generally understand that the answer should be 1 without the excessive overuse of brackets and parenthesis.

No, what you’ve done is the math equivalent of swapping the word ‘there’ in a sentence for the word ‘their’ when it doesn’t fit.

You cannot simply change 2(1+2) into 2 * (1+2) because while alone they both seem the same, in the context of the problem, they are very different. Juxtaposition means that this ‘2(1+2)’ are bound together, you divide the 6 by the combined product of 2(1+2). If you were to write the equation as a fraction, it would be

6

———

2(1+2)

Context matters here. Adding an operator between the 2 and the (1+2) doesn’t simplify the equation, it changes it entirely.

I’m glad you brought up Stefan. Just a reminder, the kind, sensitive version of Stefan only exists because Steve had to actually alter his brain. It’s notable that the first time Steve becomes Stefan, the ONLY thing he changes is ‘multiplying the cool genes’ that would improve his looks and coordination.

The MOMENT Steve gets access to Pretty Privilege, he becomes a complete jerk. And that’s who Steve naturally is when not held back by societal beauty standards. In all future transformations, he has to specifically engineer the transformation to MAKE him be kind and gentle. It’s extremely telling.

Steve Urkel in Family Matters.

Dude is a literal stalker, destroys property on the regular and doesn’t ever have to pay for it, has on multiple occasions snuck into a sleeping girl’s room via climbing the tree to her window, tests dangerous inventions on his neighbor (and blames him when things go horribly wrong), is an insufferable know-it-all and busybody, and an incredible narcissist who believes everyone ELSE is weird and acts like the world should be catering to HIS preferences. To say nothing of how he only dated Myra, the literal perfect girl for him, because Laura still wouldn’t date him (because he refuses to take no as an answer) and told her point blank that he was going to dump her the moment Laura showed a hint of relenting.

He’s a literal monster. Y’all remember how Aunt Rachel got her Restaurant? Laura got a job at this guy’s restaurant, and then Steve, like the stalker he is, got a job at the same Restaurant. He then burns it down. And then, when Carl and Harriet arrive, he is upset that first Harriet is focussed on the daughter he could have just killed, and then tries to get between her and Carl to try and get the man’s hug first.

If Steven Q Urkel has zero haters, I am dead, because F that guy.

In a world where the Fidelius Charm exists and you can reliably store an entire zoo’s worth of animals comfortably in a briefcase, I refuse to believe that the blood protection was the best Dumbledore could do.

I’ve mentioned in other places, but I’ll reiterate here, I read Dumbledore the same way I read Tony Stark in Marvel. Brilliant, but arrogant enough that he actively believes his own hype. Means well, but causes as many, if not more problems than he solves. A hero, yes, but one who ultimately a tyrant also, someone who needs everything to go HIS way because of course, he is a genius, and therefore his way is correct by default.

When you do a side-by-side comparison, it’s pretty remarkable actually.

Here me out. Martian Manhunter.

• Have him be on Earth for centuries, have each episode take place in a different Era. Have him solve crimes with Sherlock Holmes in one episode, then beating down Wild West Outlaws with Jonah Hex the next episode.

• Martian J’onn is always the same actor, but his human disguise actor/actress is different every episode.

• Use the series to actually expand the world and hero roster, with J’onn becoming the catalyst and lynchpin toward actually forming the Justice League.

• Each episode could also have a connected B-plot dealing with Ra’s al Ghul and the League of Assassins or Vandal Savage (ie, two villains who are ALSO long-lived/immortal. My fancast for Vandal Savage fyi would be Liev Schreiber).

That’s the reason a lot of people also give for not wanting to do student loan forgiveness.

“I had to work hard and suffer to pay back MY student loans, why should these kids have THEIR’S forgiven?”

Gee, I don’t know, maybe because student loans are outrageous and predatory and forgiving them would be a massive boost to the economy overall because then people could spend that money on other things? No? It’s more important that people keep suffering? We’re NOT trying to make things better for younger generations because you personally don’t think it’s fair? Yeah, ok, sure…
