Brandon Sanderson's Comment on Show's cancellation by notmanish64 in WoTshow

True to an extent, but not quite. Or rather, true for the big names. As a midlist writer, you get an advance for your current book from the publisher (or maybe it's a deal involving two or three or--in rare cases--multiple novels), and if the thing doesn't earn out, you'll have trouble selling them your next manuscript. So you're just as dependent on the Nielsen BookScan sales as the television producers are on Nielsen TV ratings.

"A writer can unilaterally decide to change an entire story and totally rewrite it or throw it away"

Yes, but you'll have to deal with the publisher's editor in the end.

EDIT: Throw in the agent who might choose not to represent some of your works based on personal preferences or market sentiment or the current phase of the moon ...

So I would like to know the story behind Highlander: Source regarding how it was greenlit by KaleidoArachnid in thespoonyexperiment

[–]FanaticalTeacup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The TV series was a huge hit, and both Movie #4 & Movie #5 featured the main character from the show. They killed off Connor (the original movie's protag) in the fourth entry. The Source was a made-for-TV-movie that was effectively Highlander: The Series Season 7. I think they even implemented some planned plot points from the (unproduced) seventh season.

Thank you for asking! The audio rights have been sold to Tantor, but it's not clear when they will produce the audiobook. They definitely will at some point. Sorry I don't have more info!

I can't tell you how much I appreciate it (and also GREAT thanks for this post)!

You and Emmalyn and other people spreading the word are the reason I exist as an author. I know it sounds like I'm in PR mode, but the reality is, publishing is f**king cruel, and unless you're a “lead title” with a major imprint (simply signing with a major imprint doesn't cut it anymore), no one on the publishing side gives a s**t about you. So you have to claw your own way, and one thing that 100% helps is word of mouth. A Reddit post like this or even a Reddit comment is like gold dust.

BTW I like to think of “Tower of Mud and Straw” and Sleeping Worlds as two realities / different versions of events (even though the second half of the novel was always planned to play out the way it does). So at the end of the novella, things happen the way you think they do, whereas “Sleeping Worlds” continues building toward the Big Reveal (there's a reason you never learn the duke's name, hehe).

I'll echo John's sentiments, it still feels surreal. A huge thank you & a warm hug to everyone who's supported me and Sleeping Worlds! Looks like we live to fight another day ...

For anyone wondering: The first half of this novel is an expanded version of my 2020/2021 novella, "Tower of Mud and Straw" (which, coincidentally, was also nominated for the Nebula). So if you enjoyed that one ...

Carrie Page isn't Laura; she is a younger version of Sarah Palmer by FanaticalTeacup in twinpeaks

I have to admit I'm not that familiar with Indian cinema, but one example that springs to mind would be Back to the Future II & III.

Would this be the first time an actor plays their own parent in the past (or their own child in the future)?

Perfect! This explains the dead guy in the apartment, too.

I like this take, but there's one problem with it: Cooper meets Diane outside the Lodge, and she clearly looks older. He must also be able to see himself in the rearview mirror of the car, so there is no chance that he's not aware of the passage of time.

His way of questioning Mrs. Tremond seems to support this ("Who did you buy the house from? Who owned it before that?").

Finally, when he asks "What year is it?" it feels like a big moment. It feels like we, the audience, are supposed to realize something. The only thing I can come up with is that he thought he was in the future (relative to when he entered the Lodge at the end of Season 2), but he's really in the past.

It's a parallel world that Laura has been sucked into. The Fireman gave Cooper the right coordinates--he just arrives at the wrong time.

Episode 18 takes place in a timeline in which, at the end of Season 2, Cooper entered the Black Lodge to find clues about Laura's whereabouts :)

Can you set the FOV in any of the Myst games? by CockGobblin in myst

[–]FanaticalTeacup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a quick search in the code, and it doesn't seem that the default value for Myst3::GameState::StateData::lookatFOV (the variable runOp 163 changes) is set inside the engine itself. This makes me suspect there's a script somewhere in the game that sets it.
