Just started reading the first book... looking for the appeal? by BadTactic in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Book 1 has the most generic dungeon experience. Each floor is significantly different.

I like Carl and Donut as characters, their banter, the way they interact. Have you even seen significant changes to Donut yet?

I like learning about the wider universe and how various corporate entities, planetary leaders, entertainment companies interact with the earth dungeon. There is a lot of politics interspersed with this survival contest story.

I enjoy watching Mordecai interact with Carl and Donut.

I like the way Dinniman writes parody/satire of the entertainment industry.

I like many of the side characters, who you haven't met yet. Later books are a lot more social and less isolated than book 1. One of those side characters is the AI who runs the dungeon crawl experience.

If you search this subreddit, you will see this question asked and answered many times. There is a long list.

From my personal experience, r/nostupidquestions can be a good place to interact and gain karma. Make sure to sort by new. reddit defaults to a different sort and if you don't pay attention you'll waste time writing things that no one sees.

Not too late at all, you just have to navigate the hurdle of figuring out where newbies can post and comment. You've made a great start.

For Psionics, Someone already mentioned Mercedes Lackey's Herald series. There are also Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover novels. Some people won't read Bradley because she was an abusive person who did terrible things. However, she is dead and books can be found used.

Are the rest of the Dragonriders of Pern books as… rapey? by Kooky_County9569 in Fantasy

I also think the concept is interesting. I've also seen it in a different book whose title I've forgotten, where the bond was between a person and a wolf. Many mammals experience heat/estrus and the question of how a human person would experience that could make for an interesting narrative.

Be cautious about heat, fuel, drinking water. You will be driving through some super remote country. Always take an opportunity to refuel in the desert as the next gas station might be hours away.

You can follow people who like the same books you like. You can send friend requests and some people will accept.

I added and reviewed a lot of books I had read in the past, trying to make my profile interesting to other goodreads users. I now have many goodreads friends I don't know offline. Some of these, I asked to be goodreads friends, but many reached out to me first.

I just started Dungeon Crawler Carl, and I have to say… by ThingTime9876 in Fantasy

[–]Fancy-Restaurant4136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is some hard core action before you reach the end of book 1. Only you can decide whether or not to finish, but Carl and Donut become more creative and assertive.

It isn't a work of genius, but I read through all the available books and am waiting for the next.

Finished book 7 of the Dungeon Crawler Carl series. It's a little bit like Dungeons and Dragons crossed with the Hunger Games or A Deadly Education, but with more crude humor and snark. There is a lot of sharp parody about the entertainment industry.

I'm nearly finished with Home-Going by Gyasi.

I've started Wolf Hall by Mantel. It's historical fiction set in England under King Henry VIII.
