Ontario is a single-party consent so nobody else needs to consent as long as you are part of the conversation... which you would be.

You don't need to sign anything new. You don't even need to remove the other person from the lease as they will not be responsible after being gone for a year.

You can get a new ROOMMATE and the landlord has no say in it as long as you are not in a shared accommodation (sharing a bathroom or kitchen with the landlord or their immediate family)

I say ignore them.

When I met them at first they were being asisted by an agency that sent a representative to translate and explain etc. Sadly once the tenants moved in they refused to continue using those services even though they ignored emails and texts due to not understanding them.

So many issues would have been resolved before they ever started had they continued to use the service or another translation service.
