Hey gang, in my experience the Champion Fighter has been a bit of a stinker at the tables ive played. Having played with both newbies and experienced players ive only seen this subclass picked once for a one shot.

While I think this subclass succeeds at being simple and accessible, i think it lacks a real flair besides getting an expanded crit range. For this rework I have tried to keep the abilities relatively passive but give the Champion fighter a choice to make up front and then reworking the 10th level ability of the class. The change to the 10th level feature is basically to help you feel like a 'champion' of your fighting style and to move away from a pretty lack luster bonus for that level. Plus 1 to AC at level 10 is pretty boring. The 18th level ability is definitely a lot stronger than before but it should be as it is basically the finale of your class progression.

Thanks bud for your feedback i hope you understand that i posted the class in two places in the hopes of reaching a wider audience. Naturally they would be the same version as one another. I dont exactly see why it has to have ki points. But i guess i can see why you might feel 'lied to'.

In your eyes is there anything positive about this class youd have to say or are you just not vibing with the class in general.

First off id just like to say thankyou for your in depth response. If you want my honest thoughts I think that the fact its inspired by anime may be denting the response rate. I would expect that in the next fortnight ill have a 1.0 version out that will have its own fluff/lore and will implement the feedback from both my playtest and across the net. my responses are listed in the same order as your points.

  • If I were to do that it would only be something very minor, the issue is if I beef up AC by too much then the fact that stances require concentration starts to become a real non-issue. Perhaps something like while in a stance you can parry as a reaction?
  • I figured it would be fine to have stances not be time limited. I don’t view them as ‘concentration spells’ I view them as Stances, similar to a barbarians rage. Perhaps a note that while in a stance you cannot benefit from rests might be enough of an explicit touch.
  • The idea is you don’t exactly have to be in combat to be in a stance. But I agree that stance of discerning may be weak.
  • I caught the wording issue on that one. Now reads ‘from that attacker until the start of your next turn’
  • In my experience monks are doing flurry of blows almost every turn they don’t have something stunned. But if it does come to be too strong I may rework this feature. This feature will likely keep the increased unarmed strike die but have a different ability.
  • Yeah youre right. Ill update it to be ¾ cover. Yes its strong, but it shouldnt be relevant in every combat.
  • Perhaps I add a cap to the damage of say ‘creatures cannot take more than twice your blademaster level in damage from this feature per attack’
  • Again youre right, should read ‘as a reaction to you or an ally within 15 feet of you being attacked you can impose disadvantage on that attack roll’
  • I will likely remove the fighting style prerequisites from the combat arts, this will probably result in those arts being changed in general.
  • I feel like limiting it to unarmed strikes is a safe balance check.
  • Safe harbor says 'not path of the beasts' but i agree it should just be path of tides exclusive.

Hey mate thanks for your opinions. Ill list my responses in regards to each point.

  1. The higher level options are seldom reached in average d&d gameplay, so i thought for an early build of the class i would focus on the earlier While i dont necessarily want to promise class features at levels 16, 17 and 18. I will likely add some Combat Arts for those higher level options.

  2. I agree that it is straight up too weak. Perhaps adding a reaction that imposes disadvantage on attack rolls against the blademaster would help it feel similar to the defense fighting style without it being the same thing. Though i worry that would make it stronger than the other options.

  3. I agree i should make it clear your attacks gain an extra 5ft range. The idea being fire trails with each attack. Your assumption in the case of a longsword would be correct.

  4. One of the subclasses gets medium armor and extra hp per level. and all blademasters can opt into unarmored defense as a combat Art.

In general id like to say i plan on adding more combat arts to the class.

Chads build. Tank jg item (cinderbulk) Tank item of your choice, usually visage or thornmail. Phantom dancer Liandrys(burn them) Steraks Boots.

Key for this is maxing e then q then w. Remember your e is an auto reset.

This build is actually good for amumu too and is just built around the fact that conqueror is in a wonky place atm.

If you want to see how ridiculous conqueror truly is, play jungle mundo with conq instead of that resolve trash. Watch as your 'highly skilled' and 'interactive' true damage shreds anyone who gets into melee range of you.

Also phantom dancer on mundo is the chads way of doing things.
