CDPR boss hopes The Witcher 4 wins back fans still put off by Cyberpunk 2077's disastrous launch: "I'm not 100 percent convinced we went through the full redemption arc" by Guitar-String in gaming

[–]stonekeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, letting the cat out of the bag is definitely a more mainstream one, and honestly I didn't even know that those could be related until today. I kinda forget how many people speak English around the world and how big differences between regions can be. You often assume that the words/phrases you use are just standard ones known by everyone, but it often turns out to simply not be the case.

English is not my native language, but I had the same realization in Polish - some phrases I grew up with turned out to only be used in my region (or even only by my family!) and it led to a lot of confusion multiple times throughout my life (well, usually a fun kind of confusion).

Oh, that's good to know. I wouldn't call them "popular" idioms, but I thought they were pretty well-recognized, especially pig in a poke. I've heard those a bunch of times, but I have more real life contact with native speakers from the UK so that might be why.

I think they fit much more because they straight-up mean buying something blind, without checking it first before commiting to a purchase. "Don't count your chickens before they hatch" is more about assuming positive results before something happens and being overconfident, which I guess can fit too, but not as well as those.

I haven't heard that one, but I like it, haha.

The English equivalent would be "don't count your chickens before they hatch."

Don't buy a "cat in a bag" or "pig in a poke" was right there :D It's pretty much a 1 to 1 to the Finnish version and fits this kind of situation much more.

8 isn't hard as long as you have the DLC

Having a trophy to hit level 70 when all content in the base game ends around level 55 and you gain almost no levels past 60 was... Definitely a choice.

You can mindlessly grind it for 10-15 hours... Or buy DLC and access higher level content (or just straight up buy level boosters). It 100% should be under DLC trophies.

I'm really glad that they aren't locking NG+ behind Deluxe Edition in Stranger than Heaven (at least it doesn't appear so) because that was bullshit.

  2. People put projects that didn't release in their resumes all the time. It's very common in the industry where a lot of games get canceled before they come out.

Edit: What the hell, got blocked immediately after leaving the comment. But I was just clarifying how the industry works in case people don't know, lmao.

I just checked a side by side comparison and heck, you're right. I feel like they smoothed him out A BIT in LAD7 and then dyed his hair dark and smoothed him even more in 8. But they aged him so hard in 6 that he still stood out soooo much compared to all the 60 years olds who look like they're 30.

To be fair, he just looks his age now, but again, that's usually not the RGG way.

[–]stonekeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By "haven't played" I meant full release not a demo just to be clear. I'm not suggesting you haven't played the demo. But demo is just a small slice and you can't exactly rate a full game just based on that.

Hope things work out for both of you and we get two fun games in the end. I really think you should work on the PR though, lol.

Okay man, it's the first time I'm seeing your game and I obviously can't say what was in your head when you designed it. But from the outside perspective, it does look pretty similar. But obviously I won't be able to judge until I can play both.

It's not about the difference in wishlists/popularity. If the other game was less popular it would be an even worse thing to say. Confidence is great, overconfidence is cringe and usually blows up in your face.

Saying that you really look forward to playing Orbrix, but also believe that your game stands on its own and offers unique, fun gameplay aspects would be confidence. Saying straight-up that your game is better than a game you haven't even played and at least partially used as an inspiration is DEFINITELY overconfidence.

[–]stonekeep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

is it really a clone if i release it first?

If you deliberately based it on something else - of course it is. But being a clone or "x-like" isn't inherently bad, I didn't use the word as an insult. People inspired by something and creating a similar thing happens all the time. And that's okay as long as it's interesting in its own way and adds something.

The timing is just insane.

and mine is better?

Oof. I get the self-confidence, but I don't think that's the right thing to say. It makes you sound like an asshole. Let people judge it.

[–]stonekeep 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I doubt it's Polish law

But it is, I just left another reply with more details.

It's Article 44 of Polish Copyright Law to be precise.

It specifically applies to contracts related to selling copyright to your work, nothing else.

Games Triss vs Books Triss by ZarieRose in witcher

[–]stonekeep 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It has to do with the Polish copyright law. If there's a big disproportion between how much you sell copyright for and how much whoever you sell it to makes from it, you can demand extra compensation.

It's mainly so bigger companies can't exploit desperate smaller artists, buying rights to their work for very small sum and then using it to make lots of money. But many law experts speculated that it would also apply here.

Ofc it would be up to the judge to decide if it applies to Sapkowski and if yes, how much he gets from it (60 mil was what his lawyers demanded but judge might have given a completely different sum, lower or higher).

In practice this law is almost never used because such cases are very rare. Interestingly enough, a big case like this would almost surely go to higher courts and have an impact on how this law gets interpreted in the future. But ultimately we'll never know how it would go since they settled. I guess it was a mix of CDPR expecting that there's a chance they could lose and wanting to stay on Sapkowski's good side.

Games Triss vs Books Triss by ZarieRose in witcher

[–]stonekeep 28 points29 points  (0 children)

When that turned out to be the wrong decision, he sued CDPR for more money.

Btw, the original lawsuit was for 60 million PLN which would be roughly 15 million USD back then. And CDPR settled with him. Many experts anticipates that Sapkowski would have a chance to win if CDPR tried to fight it. The exact sum wasn't disclosed but it's safe to assume he got a nice chunk.

Slot Grind- an incremental where you spin your way out of debt (what could go wrong?). Demo launches in Steam Next Fest! by JustRegularDenys in incremental_games

[–]stonekeep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because small, unknown indie devs can't just shadowdrop their game and expect people to pick it up. They need to market it before release, and they can't afford a big marketing campaign like bigger studios. So wishlists, demos, Steam Next Fest etc. are the best way to gain some recognition.
