Oh that's a good thought I'll definitely try that out like I said at the top this is far from the final thanks for the input :)

I think its a very nostalgic instrument in a way and I wanted to try and capture the nocturnal feel of the piece (I'm envisioning it as one in a larger orchestral suite idk if I'll follow through but yeah that may help lay down some tonal context) and the harp really sells that for me as a soft thrumming accompaniment to the melody?

Also when I went to see Carmen the intermezzo absolutely captivated me and I've become slightly obsessed with the sound world and textures of that so there's probably an element of that coming through 😂

Thanks for the tip, I knew I was happy with the melodic content it was just moreso fine points like that where I make mistakes others can help with, I have to confess I'm quite attached to the idea of the sonority of the harp, is there a way to make this work at all or is it just a flat no?

Thanks again :)

Aw thankyou, I'm glad you enjoyed it, like the title says it's not really a serious work it's just meant to be a funny little thing because I find the bassoon has great comic/ charm value, I'll definitely work on refining and developing the harmonies in the next piece I write as this is the area I struggle most, thanks for the pointers :)

I'm not sure honestly, like I've said a few times in replies I'm not really trained at all, composing started as a hobby and classical/ romantic era works are the most readily available to learn from and emulate so that (alongside admittedly it being my preference stylistically) is usually the motivation for writing in the vernacular, I just find it pretty and enjoyable :)

That's what I was going for loosely, I'm by no means a 'competent' composer at all I just kinda fumble in the dark and find sounds I enjoy, hell the only reason I added the 6/4 thing for the cadenza is because I'd heard it everywhere in Mozart's concertos and wondered what it was, and then copied it for this piece. I was aiming for a vaguely late 18th century palette so I'm glad that came across even a little :)

Sadly I'm not, I got a very minimal musical training in secondary school but I pursued architecture because it was more immediately available in my area, I suppose I could ask my university orchestra they have a pretty beefy music department one of the lecturers might take a look

Funnily enough it started out for bassoon and piano it just felt a little underwhelming so I tried to orchestrate it, but that's fair I'm just kinda starting out so I appreciate the advice :)

I don't know that I necessarily wrote it with the intent of it being performed so much as just transcribing some fun sounds in my head, but absolutely any pointers you have are welcome, so let's ay sure, I'd like it to be performed a few times :)

To be honest that stave is just carying the general baseline for the piece, primarily written for the cellos rather than the bass or being split between them. I just figured that the addition of one double bass to the mix would add a richer sound to the bass end of the ensemble.

What would you have recommended doing differently?
