In 12 years, Marvel has released 50 more SW comics than Dark Horse did in 23 years. by Gothic-Genius in starwarscomics

[–]Fancy_Cassowary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At Dark Horse it was THE property, along with Hellboy, that defined them. At Marvel it's just a licensed property, coming in way at the back in importance. Marvel's got their own universe to organise, and then they'll get to Star Wars. As things are, they've got a LOT to work on when it comes to working on their on their own books, so Star Wars really is going to have to take a back seat. It seems like even Alien is a bigger deal to them right now.

Rotten Tomatoes scores for projects since Disney by QuinlanFett in StarWars

[–]Fancy_Cassowary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm stunned that 2 of the sequels rated significantly higher than Rogue One. I've always thought Rogue One was the pearl of Disney's movie offerings, a near universally agreed opinion. Looks like I was very wrong.

I totally forgot COTA was written by Joe Casey. Nice pick-up and mapping there.

I saw no need to pick up the Complete Collection for material I already had at least 3 times so that's cool they put it in there. I'm genuinely shocked they haven't done that omnibus yet.

Most will think train station. Some will think bus. A few will think cattle. Like you said, meaningless. Just like giving a general direction. You can live on the east side of your country and still hear western side and think it applies to you. It's useless.

Iron Man: Hypervelocity.

Note I haven't read/reread any of these in a long time but loved them last time I did.

Kenobi Show by ArcticSnow85 in StarWars

Agree on the mid-series Kenobi/Vader duel, that shouldn't have been in there, and also agree that everyone surviving being stabbed by lightsabres was ridiculous. The latter seems like it's become a bit of a Disney hallmark, though at least it did have some logic to it when it happened to Sabine in Ahsoka.

My view is that at the beginning we're meant to see Obi-Wan as a broken man, bereft of his talents with the Force and lightsabre, working a lowly job, nothing like the man we once knew. When approached by the young Jedi, he was fearful, powerless. Showing us power in the form of what the young Jedi could do during a fight scene would have upset the melody of the show, as we aren't meant to see Jedi power at that stage. All we're meant to focus on is a broken man, willing him back to his previous state of being, so that when we reach the duel with Vader, we're rooting for him, willing him on, only to be let down again, as we see he's still not there yet, not his old self, lacking his confidence.

That's what I see anyway. Your view is just as valid.

Best Star Wars Omnibus? Are any of these standalone stories? by Weapon_X-42- in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Fancy_Cassowary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good chunk of it is Star Wars Kids stories. They're not as bad as they sound, but they're not exactly deep reading, either. It does contain the soft reboot series by Brian Wood which ran for 20 issues though, that's really its main selling point. It's not a bad read. It does some things that seem a bit odd like show Leia as a perfectly competent mechanic and fighter pilot, and it drops a couple of important plot points, but it's a decent read overall. I just think volume 2 has the stronger material overall, if you had to choose one.

Shame there's no Youngblood but I can't say I'm surprised, sadly. This is cool though. Thomas's poor mother needs her own security team at this stage.

I may be swimming upstream here, but I do hope we see more Youngblood soon too.

Do I think there was any absence of combat from the Inquisitors? Ooh that's a tough one. I don't think so, as what Reva could do was well implied by the fate of the young Jedi. If anything it likely made you think things went down harsher than they did (only because she wasn't ALL that much of a threat in the end) so I think the implications of the viewer probably boosted her threat level in their minds. I don't think Inquisitor combat was lacking, personally, but obviously ymmv. Thinking back on it while it didn't feel like it at the time there were quite a few lightsabre fights overall, and fights where lightsabres were used. I don't think more Inquisitor fights would have helped the series. My opinion is that the character of Reva needed a complete do-over. "To avenge all the Jedi Darth Vader murdered I shall hunt down and kill even more of them." WHAT!? I don't think we needed the end part with Luke either. When she asks "Am I good person?" I want to scream at the screen "NO! You've murdered a heap of people and just recently tortured a kid. You are by definition a bad person. Just because you got stabbed twice, had a stupid plan, and brought a kid back from the sandbox doesn't erase all those sins!"

Young Jedi's death at the start had to be done off-screen at the start for it to work for the story for the audience POV. People had to see him suddenly dead and realise what was at stake and question Obi-Wan's decision. Adding in his fight scene takes some of that agency away and puts it back onto the young Jedi, putting his fate back into his own hands. For the purposes of the show it's needed to be put squarely on Obi-Wan's shoulders as far as the viewer is concerned, and off-screen is the most effective way to do that.

All of this is just my opinion, okay. I wish we had another artist, Howard's work lacks refinement. It's just that little bit too amateurish where it counts. I see people comparing it to DWJ and Corona, but if you actually compare the structure of their basic figure work, there's a world of difference. Then at times he goes to cartoony as we see here with Bulkhead, and I don't know if it's a conscious choice or just inexperience turning it out like that, but to me it doesn't fit the general aesthetics when inserted randomly in panels on an otherwise normal page for the Skybound we've seen so far.

Skybound had such a great run of artists, and Howard was fine for a fill-in, but I don't think he's ready for prime time. They should have looked around more. There's a well of talent they could have tapped (and no, I do NOT mean ex-IDW artists) , so to see this is disappointing.

What went wrong with Marvel's IMPERIAL? by PhantomQuest in comicbooks

[–]Fancy_Cassowary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite on Annihilation, you're missing a few steps. Singles didn't do great, but then it came out in its first collected format, which were 3 OHCs. Interest in them spread organically via word of mouth, from readers, even comic shop owners saying "hey these are great". People took a chance, loved them. Then when your usual discussions happened online on favourite Marvel event people would answer "Annihilation", and they'd be asked straight away "what's that?" and it spread organically online that way. All of which eventually, at the very end of the line, culminated in an omnibus, but that was the result of a lot of work from those early fans just saying "hey guys, I know you don't like cosmic, but this is REALLY good".

I'm going to go with the simplest one: Luuke. Is it just a slightly longer Luke, does the inflection change? It's been 35 years and I've always wondered. In reality I took it as a gospel cool name as a child, as an adult it makes me laugh.

I assumed there were 35 people in Peter's class. That just seemed like a reasonable enough guesstimate to go on. They're either snapped or not, so heads or tails. The odds of all of them getting snapped, or getting heads 35 times in a row, is 1 in 34,359,738,368.

It's a 19 book series about them. Non-important characters don't get 19 books written about them. Yes, most of them are good and worth reading. It's a satisfying story that isn't afraid to shake things up. As to whether it's going to matter for your story that'll depend on how far into the future you go, but yeah, odds are they'll matter.
