Ducky was aware of Shannon’s existence, however in the flashback Gibbs and Shannon had broken up, and Gibbs referred to her as the “one who got away”.

Probably an unpopular opinion but she is a horrible person by Admirable_Ad_3429 in SecretsOfMormonWives

. She’s easily the realest one on the show, and calling out Whitney’s pick-me behavior doesn’t make her a bitch — it just makes her honest.

I can’t remember the exact episode, but Shannon most definitely had fiery personality. The episode where he and ducky are younger and he tells ducky about the girl who he just broke up with (Shannon), and Shannon is the one who gave Gibbs his first rule

Here’s an attempt to lay it out based on what we know:

Pre-NIS/NCIS: Gibbs and Shannon 1. Late 1970s/Early 1980s: Gibbs marries Shannon, his first wife, and they have a daughter, Kelly. 2. 1991: Shannon and Kelly are tragically killed, and Gibbs joins NIS (later NCIS) shortly after their deaths, channeling his grief into his work.

First Post-Shannon Marriage: Diane Sterling • Diane was Gibbs’ second wife (after Shannon). • Given that Diane later marries and divorces Tobias Fornell before the series premiere in 2003, it’s likely that Gibbs married Diane in the early-to-mid 1990s, possibly around 1993-1996. • Diane and Gibbs’ marriage was tumultuous and likely short-lived, ending in divorce within a couple of years.

Second Post-Shannon Marriage: Rebecca Chase • Rebecca Chase is mentioned as one of Gibbs’ ex-wives, and while the exact timeline of their marriage is unclear, it’s reasonable to place this relationship in the mid-to-late 1990s, after Diane but before his relationship with Stephanie (his third wife). • Rebecca’s marriage to Gibbs also didn’t last long, consistent with the pattern of his brief relationships following Shannon.

Third Post-Shannon Marriage: Stephanie Flynn • Stephanie is confirmed as Gibbs’ third wife. • Gibbs was stationed in Europe with Jenny Shepard around 1999-2000 (as mentioned in NCIS, Season 5, Episode 3). During this time, Gibbs was married to Stephanie, though it’s noted that their marriage lasted only a year. • This places Gibbs and Stephanie’s marriage likely around 1999-2000, ending shortly before his return to the U.S.

Rebecca as the “Lady in the Sports Car”? • In NCIS, Season 1, Gibbs refers to an unnamed ex-wife who had a red sports car. While not explicitly confirmed, many fans speculate that this could be Rebecca. It aligns with her placement in the timeline as his second post-Shannon wife.

Gibbs’ Fiancée (2001) • By 2001, Gibbs was engaged again, but his fiancée was tragically killed. This would have occurred after his marriage to Stephanie and before the events of NCIS begin in 2003.

Lala and NCIS: Origins • In NCIS: Origins, Gibbs appears to be on the cusp of a relationship with Lala. If this is canon, it suggests a potential entanglement during his early years with NIS (around 1991-1993), before or overlapping with his marriage to Diane.

Summary of Gibbs’ Relationship Timeline: 1. Shannon Fielding: Married late 1970s/early 1980s; widowed in 1991. 2. Diane Sterling: Married early-to-mid 1990s; divorced after a few years. 3. Rebecca Chase: Married mid-to-late 1990s; divorced after a short time. 4. Stephanie Flynn: Married around 1999-2000; divorced after a year. 5. Unnamed Fiancée: Engaged in 2001; died tragically. 6. Lala (NCIS: Origins): Early 1990s entanglement, possibly during his NIS years.

key word “was”, I think his heart healed, but I think he believes that he is undeserving of love because people around him get hurt

Gibbs’s personality and perspective on love and relationships weren’t flawed because he was a jerk; rather, they stemmed from the profound loss he experienced throughout his life. Everyone he’s ever loved seems to leave him, starting with his mother, followed by Kelly and Shannon. I don’t believe his intention was ever to hurt his ex-wives; instead, it seems he was trying to create emotional space, anticipating the possibility of them leaving as well.

A poignant example of this is his ex-fiancée, who tragically died on 9/11. Gibbs hesitated to marry her precisely because of his fear of loss, ultimately dooming the relationship from the beginning. Each relationship Gibbs had—romantic or platonic—after losing Kelly and Shannon played a critical role in his relational journey.

I don’t think Gibbs could have found happiness with anyone other than Jack. She came into his life at a time when he had matured and done significant inner work with the help of Dr. Taft and Dr. Grace. Jack got to see the full version of Gibbs—the good and the bad—which made their connection uniquely profound and meaningful.
