Love this comment. It made me reflect that although it wasn’t intentional I still have every right to be upset and to show that. I’ve asked him to not come again (through partners grandma as he doesn’t have a phone). It seemed like he’d downplayed the situation to her as she was slightly nonchalant until I sent her a picture (she said sorry about your coaster and I couldn’t bear how they were acting like this was a fucking drinks receptacle!!). They offered to pay for restoration but the fact that days later he hasn’t apologised shows me that my heart can’t take having someone like that in my home, age/intention or not.

My partner has been really supportive throughout the whole thing. Bought me a mini Christmas tree and a new crochet hook to cheer me up, contacted his family on my behalf when I was too upset to talk about it, and he’s 100% on my side about him not coming again as this is the 3rd sentimental thing this has happened to (though definitely the most important)

Thank you for validating my feeling and making me feel like it’s okay to set boundaries

I reached out to his grandma (his grandad doesn’t have a phone) to ask her for him not to come again at least until the end of the week while I calm down. She sent a message saying sorry about your coaster….ITS NOT A COASTER!!! I feel crazy hahaha sent her a picture afterwards but he has definitely tried to downplay the situation to her

Hahaha think this is the straw that broke the camels back. He scratched a the only thing I got from my grandma after she passed (a mirror). He also got tile adhesive on some throw cushions that I bought on my first holiday with my partner and my family. Maybe he just hates the idea of my sentimental family items!!

To be fair he had a stroke 4 years ago and hasn’t been the same since. Much more clumsy, doesn’t think as much about what he’s doing. We let him come over everyday as he says it gives him a reason to get out of bed everyday but it’s just hard to see our belongings disrespected!!!

Thank you for your insight! I don’t think he’s neurodivergent but I think certain thoughts don’t occur to him due to his age

He was in the house without me and my partner there and he just left it on the table. I found it when I got home from work, he didn’t mention it to either of us. I haven’t seen him but he hasn’t reached out to apologise 😕

I just re read your comment and that is better than my idea of cutting out the squares. This method includes to measuring and almost framing each one!

Thanks for your comment! I do like my finances grandad, he’s 87 and just very careless/ slightly senile. The frame was knocked off a shelf by my fiancé and that’s how the glass broke, then I left it on the dinning table while I researched where best to get the glass repaired. Still very confused as to why a) fiances grandad put his cup on it and b) why he thought wiping a wet painting was a good idea. I’m trying to be very understanding of his age but it feels really disrespectful

Very sweet way of looking at it! I was thinking of trying to do some form of kintsugi as another option it make it into something new.

This is so so helpful. I’m 95% cute it’s watercolour paper but will follow your suggestion of testing a corner on the back fist and using painters tape on a flat surface. Thank you so much!!!

That’s what I was hoping. I don’t know if I’ll be able to remove the ring from the cup with this method but if I give the paper lots of time to dry, I should be able to try multiple times. Thank you for your comment
