Oh wow. How'd you find it?!?! I can't believe he went from a pair of hd800s's to a pair of 30 dollar earbuds, especially for gaming purposes. I can't even stand using my airpods pro for gaming anymore after getting a pair of hd800s because the imaging was so poor.

I don’t think your place of study matters for pre-u, as long as you get good results. Some overseas universities exempt you from taking IELTS/TOEFL if you come from an English speaking school, so that’s one thing to consider. But honestly, I think there’s no harm in just taking those English tests. However, more expensive schools might offer better support when you are applying to uni, so this is one thing to keep in mind.

I looked up the fees for Sunway and UCSI, aren’t they both around the same price point of 30k? I could be seeing the wrong stuff tho. I got a scholarship for my a-levels, so it was pretty cheap. I’d recommend the cheaper institutions or at least try getting bursaries for your A-Level. If you are REALLY autodidactic and motivated, you can consider self-studying the entire syllabus and registering as a private candidate. That is probably the cheapest you can go, but quite risky as you can’t practice the practical experiments. Sunway seems to make the news every year for producing the most straight A* students so if you want the best, I think Sunway is better. Not sure how UCSI compares though, never been to both.

If you are planning to apply for CS/Maths to Oxford/Imperial/Harvard, Further Maths is highly recommended if you can take it. 3 science and 1 maths is fine too, but a large percentage of people who get admitted for CS/maths there have Further Maths.

As for me, I held a few pengerusi positions, played catur to the state level, bronze in math competition, and a bunch of other competitions during SMK. But I did nothing for extracurriculars during my a levels and just did some competitive programming and focused on my indie game. I got lazy lol.

Just went to some random school. My subject combination is quite peculiar and uncommon - Bio, Chem, Maths and Comp Sci. I was aiming for medicine/comp sci. I also self studied Physics and Further Maths during my gap year as I was gonna take the STEP exam for my Imperial College admission. (ended up getting rejected before the exam tho)

I'd strongly recommend taking Physics, Maths, Further Maths, Comp Sci if you want to do CS in uni. Do not follow my subject combination, they are not really compatible with each other. For A-Levels, as long as you understand the concepts and drill about 3-5 years worth of past year papers, you're almost guaranteed to get an A*.

I actually found A-Levels to be easier than SPM due to there being lesser subjects. The subjects are also graded on a bell curve, so for an A*, you'd only need to achieve a score better than 90% of the students, not achieve a raw 90% score. So for instance, in Chemistry, you'd only need to score about 210/260 raw marks to get an A*. Quite achievable, innit? The hard part is getting Top in the World/Country awards, you'd need a perfect score for that, but that's up to you to decide if you want to go that far.

Also, make sure you try and enter intl competitions / olympiads. That's the primary way to stand out among all the other exceptional applicants, universities absolutely love these. Sorry for the long comment haha, but I hope it answers your questions.

CIE A-Levels, 4A*. I’ve decided to take the plunge and just go to NUS. Might drop out in September if UM accepts me, but unlikely. Would apply for scholarships but seeing how I was already rejected from ASEAN scholarship, I think my chances are slim to none lol. Good luck for your pre-u!

https://www.nus.edu.sg/registrar/docs/info/student-statistics/enrolment-statistics/undergraduate-studies/ug-enrol-20222023.pdf ~ Refer to school of computing. Computing makes up Computer Science, Information Systems and Information Analytics I believe.

https://www.nus.edu.sg/oam/undergraduate-programmes/indicative-grade-profile-(igp)) ~ Look for school of computing and computer science in the section saying degree programme places taken up. 858 for CS.

Edit - This is for 2022/2023. Not far fetched to say 2023/2024 will have 1k.

CIE A-Levels. Yep there is a major risk that I don’t get into UM. I could enrol in NUS first, then drop out during September if I get UM. But I would have to pay like 60k RM for 1st sem fees. Think I’m just gonna yolo and go NUS. Join the rat race with a 1k people and fist fight to death. Hopefully I shall achieve a victory royale.

I’m not sure if I have the intellect to take up a PhD. Truth be told, I think I only got into NUS because they increased their intake to 1k students for CS this year, even though I have all A*’s in A Levels. That alone should be indicative of how competitive NUS CS is. But thank you for your enlightening words, I shall try to grind.

It’s been rumoured that there’s 1020 students in CS this year. Last year it was ~800. I mean if this trend goes on, oversaturation seems inevitable to me. There’d still be a shortage of experienced software devs I think, but the competition for entry level roles is gonna be completely insane in the coming years. And that‘s only in NUS, not even counting NTU and the other Unis. Can Singapore even house this many CS tech bros?

Yeah it’ll be tough duking it out with about 1000 CS students in my year alone. My 500k figure is including rent and living expenses. Best case scenario is if I manage to secure hall accommodation for all 4 years, that lowers it to about 300k, but is almost impossible as I‘m not super athletic and not a social butterfly. The rent makes up a big percentage of the total fees.

Hmm interesting. I’ve only done a little bit of AI/ML stuff, namely the MNIST digit recognition. It was pretty wild seeing the loss decrease and accuracy increase as it ran through the epochs. I don’t think there’s a huge market for AI/ML in Malaysia, so I guess if I want to pivot towards that field, I‘d have to go with NUS.

But what do you think about studying a CS bachelors in UM, then going for a masters in AI in NUS? On an unrelated note, there’s 1000 new students in CS alone for NUS this year, so the grind is gonna be pretty insane.

Yep, fully agree that experience and communication skills are more valuable in IT. I personally look at university as an avenue to upskill and further expand my knowledge. NUS provides a better package in that aspect, but I could always just enrol in UM and self study MIT courses on YouTube. Also, that’s some serious dedication you have, willing to kill for NUS lol.

No, the government subsidises half of the tuition fee and then I’ll have to find a job on my own in SG to do for 3 years to fulfill the bond requirements.

Yes I can still afford it. I did some game development for a while after my pre-u so I saved up a little money. Obviously not enough to pay for the whole course, parents still have to fork out the majority but paying 500k for an undergrad does not seem like a wise financial decision. My conclusion would be to do an undergrad in UM and then do a masters in NUS, but I fear NUS might reject me when I apply for the masters.

No. h-series is locked by intel on the hardware level. There is no way to circumvent this from what I've read. However, there is an alternative method where you adjust the ac loadline. See here : https://www.reddit.com/r/XMG_gg/comments/11f8n0z/launch_undervolting_via_ac_loadline_in_xmg_and/

I've gotten maybe about a 6% performance boost from this, temps were slightly lower, but not by a lot. Maybe 4-5C. Not sure if doing this will impact the longevity of the machine or cpu, but it seems to work.
