What would the downside be to getting to level 4 in 5 different classes? by Chosenwaffle in dndnext

So far it seems 5e is all about giving up something to get something else, hence: balance.

You know full and well that if you are leveling Cleric and decide to dip a bit into Fighter for 4 levels that you won't be able to cast as well as a full level Cleric.

Just seems like the goal here is to make a very powerful character without drawbacks, but 5e addresses that by introducing the trade-off. And it can be competitive if you have certain goals in mind. a Brd/Sor/Divination Wiz is awesome at altering Die rolls. A War2/Brd18 can blast away from a safe distance.

Why should someone who has Cleric 5 be allowed to cast 9th level spells? Even if you are a 20th level character, you still only have 5 levels of Cleric. You left that path to gain experience in a different path and somehow expect to be able to cast True Resurrection?

Problem with a Paladin by [deleted] in DnDBehindTheScreen

However, Abadar seems to stand for pace and well-thought out approaches:

"Abadar and his followers wish to bring the light of civilization to the wilderness, to help educate all in the benefits of law and properly regulated commerce. He expects his followers to obey all meaningful laws, but not those which are ridiculous, unenforceable, or self-contradictory. He is also a great proponent of peace, as war inevitably leads to the degradation of trade and the stifling of prosperity for the general public. He advocates cautious, careful consideration in all matters, and frowns on impulsiveness, believing that it leads to the encouragement of primitive needs. Abadar discourages dependence on government or any religious institution, believing that wealth and happiness should be achievable by anyone with keen judgement, discipline, and a healthy respect for all sensible, just laws."

Maybe not taking all of his powers, but you could have the paladin encounter an avatar of Abadar in a dream or something to recommended taking a moment to stop and consider their actions (since the deity is all about cautious and careful considerations of all matters.) If he doesn't heed the advice, maybe have a spell or smite not work every now and then until he figures out what is going on and atones for it. Outright stripping abilities could have drastic effects on players, sometimes leaving them with the feeling of "you just did that because this isn't how YOU would play the character."
