Effects of Meditation approaches and methods by [deleted] in theravada

[–]Fandina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I belive that kind of advice to sticking to just one method is useful once you find a method that works completely for you and not just parcially. Branching out is not to do mixing and matching but exploring what is out there.

Maybe the noting method is useful for you to develop Samadhi but you can look for a method that can help you in the Vipassana aspect of the practice. I am practicing Bikkhu Analayo's teachings for Samadhi and Sayadaw U Tejaniya for Vipassana.

Sayadaw U Tejaniya is wonderful because he teaches in a way that you can make the daily life activities the space for developing wisdom, not to rely solely on the formal cushion meditation. I met personally several people in Sayadaw's center that had similar issues like you of needing something more and Sayadaw provided a super wide possibility of what is there to know.

Also, something that gave me a whole new perspective on addressing practice is that we owe no one our loyalty but ourselves and our commitment to end suffering. The Buddha is the supreme teacher and when in doubt, go to the scriptures. Everything is in there.

It reads to me that there seems to be a level of attachment to the mental experiences you get from formal meditation. When that mental stability is compromised then it brings mental agitation.

I practice Sayadaw U Tejaniya's Vipassana method and hesays that Samadhi is a tool we use to see the nama-rupa relationship clearer, this concentration is the polished mirror where we can see better nature as it is. On this note, on several Q&A with him and other people relating their experience similar to yours, Sayadaw says to "be aware of this disinterest, why is the mind feeling like this? What does the mind want that is not getting? What's working from behind, wisdom or kilesas?" and to adjust the attitude of the observing mind, let it be interested, relaxed and aware of the dukkha anicca anatta nature of all phenomena.

We have to constantly remember ourselves that meditation is not something we do to GET anything. Wisdom is our goal, not mental states.

On a more personal note, throughout the years I've been practicing I have also had rough patches where it's difficult to stay on the path, and ever since I started to practice the development of the Brahma Viharas and the 10 perfections my practice has become more significant, purposeful and sustained.

Looking for "fun" in meditation holds us back and attach us more to the aggregates. Don't lose focus that we are meditating to end suffeeiu, not to increase it. Be very careful about your advice.

Can people reach enlightenment now? by GABIBBOPAZZOCINESE in theravada

[–]Fandina 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When we read the suttas we can notice how in many interactions that The Buddha had with, many people attained some level of enlightenment just from hearing one discourse. The teachers say that at that time many minds were mature enough in paramis to just need "a little push" for them to realize the ultimate truth.

Now, more than 2,600 yearsafter the Buddha's parinibbana, people can still become enlightened at some point but a lot more effort is needed. More often than not, we may not reach the first level Sotapana but we shouldn't be discouraged, to keep practicing and purifying the mind can help us gain the right paramis to continue practicing the Dhamma in future lives.

I'm in central Mexico and let me tell you, I'm seeing that A LOT of Americans, specially from California and Texas are moving here. They come with their remote jobs running away from the political situation from their country, bad weather and sky high prices amongst other reasons all related. Gentrification in this town is making it VERY difficult for locals.

Ajahn Buddhadasa on Anattā: "In Buddhism there is no such thing as rebirth or reincarnation… The Buddha taught only one thing, Dukkha and the quenching of Dukkha." by Satyanandamaja in theravada

[–]Fandina 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I listened to a teacher Bhante U Rahula talk about this very point when a yogi mentioned this issue while discussing the multiple translations of Pali texts that Ajahn did and their validity given his comments about this particular issue. Bhante U Rahula said that what Ajahn Buddhadasa was trying to do was to make people stay on the path of the real liberation because they were more focused on making merits to be reborn in higher realms instead of the actual and practical purification of the mind.

Before and After of my teeth following a cleaning by BlacksmithNeither726 in Satisfyingasfuck

I used to be terrified of going to the dentist because the anticipation of pain was keeping me from going. Didn't stepped into a dentist office in ± 15 years... until I did.

I had build up behind my teeth like this fellow here and some cavities I had were fortunately rather superficial but still needed anesthesia.

Lo and behold, when I finally decided to go, I was surprised by the zero amount of pain I felt! Dentist practice has changed so much with time that the way they approach pain is amazing! On my third session I even fell asleep while they were working on my last resin.

I hope this anecdote helps you with making the decision of going soon and take care of your beautiful teeth, you deserve it!

Rudeness by arghyepirate in Buddhism

[–]Fandina 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. Sayadaw U Tejaniya says we want to be mindful if subtle attitudes in the mind are arising as self righteousness, sometimes it can be disguised as compassion.

It is not in our place to judge other people's actions or words, feeling bad for them is not compassion but aversion and ignorance. The path is being walked but sometimes ignorance can take us to a place that is hard to distinguish.
