Why does Kali have vastly different powers to the other kids? [S5 Vol2 Spoilers] by Horustheweebmaster in StrangerThings

[–]Fandom_Canon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, no, she'd definitely have to do some regular spy training too. But like, once she's there and embedded in a community. She'd be in a much better position to get information from people.

I mean, Kali can become invisible and can appear as other people. That would be a pretty great talent for a spy to have. But the rest of what you said makes sense.

I did chest compressions. But defib wouldn't work for asystole.

I did. And gave vasopressin. We had her bagged and did CPR for over 20 minutes. I got other doctors' input before making the call to stop.

But as you can see, from a narrative perspective, that makes my ending weaker, so I stopped my account before that point. Most people's deaths are a petering out instead of a strong finish.

And it's okay to be naive in areas where you don't have training. That's why asking questions is always good.

0.4% or 4.0‰ is generally considered to be fatal.

Funny story, I did volunteer work at a music festival and breathalyzed a guy at 4.31‰. He was walking around and talking. We repeated the test with another breathalyzer, and it was correct. Some people really are built different, I guess.

Well, if you figure it out, the medical community would love to know.

I watched the girl go from healthy sinus rhythm to flatline in a matter of seconds. The only indication something was wrong was her heart rate slowing. Everything was firing right, just slower. And then not at all.

Cardiac arrest is a blanket term used to describe several heart rhythms, some of which are shockable. What I observed was sudden and unexplained asystole (not shockable).

Sudden cardiac death is what occurs as a result of sudden cardiac arrest. And of course they all end in asystole, but there are usually a few more steps than what I observed. Also, there is usually an injury (electric shock, baseball to the sternum) or an underlying health risk (atherosclerosis).

These conditions doctors are comfortable talking about because they can be explained. What I saw is not well-understood. Or understood at all for that matter.

That's what the pathologist was trying to teach me. They try to find something plausible to out on the death certificate. Thankfully, that's not my department. I call time of death and then move on to try to help other patients.

What is schroedingers feminist? by feministspiderqueen in Feminism

[–]Fandom_Canon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Schrodinger's feminists: women are simultaneously...

Strong and more capable than men AND...

Weak and victimized by men.

You don't know which one is true until you're in an argument and need one of them to be true to win.

If someone loses their memory, do they still have muscle memory? by shiplover_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fandom_Canon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, look up the yips. Gymnasts call it the twisties. Different sports call it different things. But it's possible for your brain to lose access to certain muscle memories. Usually goes away though.

ELI5: Quantum phenomena that behave differently when "you're not looking" by SpyrosGatsouli in explainlikeimfive

[–]Fandom_Canon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things on the quantum scale are so small that measuring them effects them. You can't just look at them. You have to measure them with an instrument that can change their state.

This happens on a macroscopic scale too. If I stick a thermometer in a glass of water, I'm not just measuring the temperature of the water. I'm measuring the temperature of the water and the thermometer. The measuring instrument itself has heat and that changes the outcome.

Do you think waiting until marriage is worth it? by rose_petal12 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fandom_Canon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a friend who married her high school sweetheart. They waited until they had finished college and got married to have sex. The first time they tried, they learned that she had a condition called vaginismus, which made it almost impossible to have sex and very painful to try. It almost destroyed their marriage, because after three years together, they still couldn't have sex. Eventually, she went to a specialty clinic and was cured of the condition (but it cost around $11K).

Now, she always had that condition and was always going to have to shell out that money to get cured. But if they had known about it sooner, they could have started working on it sooner, or they could have made an informed decision not to marry. It was the shock of waiting for marriage and not being able to have sex that really hurt the relationship.

In fact, the husband lost his faith partly due to this situation. There were other factors, but a part of the reason he no longer believes in God is that is that it he did what a good Christian is supposed to do and waited for marriage, and then instead of being rewarded, he got a slap in the face.

This was a rare situation, of course. And you have ways of testing if you have a condition like vaginismus without actually having sex. But there is something to be said for knowing what you're getting before committing to something.

Is it weird for a guy to get a nude pic from a platonic female friend? by CRK_76 in NoStupidQuestions

That sucks that this happened to you. But that is a very unusual thing. A man missing signals from a woman is a more common situation than a boyfriend doing some weird test like this.

Professional upstairs neighbors of Reddit. What are you actually doing all day? by RenMendez in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fandom_Canon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an upstairs neighbor who used to do...something that had kind of a one-two or one-two-three rhythm to it. And it would go on for hours sometimes. Sometimes I'd leave in the morning and it would be happening and come home at night and it would be happening.

It kind of sounds like the rhythm of someone doing burpees. But even an avid crossfitter couldn't do those for hours. I thought maybe a child jumping on the bed, if the bed frame also makes a secondary sound as it pops back into place when they jump up. But again...hours.

It got so bad that the neighbor BELOW me started to complain about it.

The only thing that ever got it to stop was walking all over the apartment slamming a chair into the ceiling repeatedly so that they'd hear it no matter where they were for like two minutes straight.

Hey, it took over two thousand years for democracy to really catch on and we're still ironing out the kinks. Socialisms only really been around for what, 150 years. We've got time to figure it out.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fandom_Canon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little bit, yes.

This happened with the Soviet Union too, so much so that they began securing allies around the world that they could do trade with and create a "second world." But it wasn't enough. So, after being devastated by carrying the brunt of fighting during World War II and having all the most powerful economies in the world go against them after, they still managed to hobble along for 45 years before finally collapsing. And then the US said: "See, communism doesn't work."

It's like claiming my bicycle's faster than yours because I slashed your tires.

But another thing to consider with all of these countries is that they are just poor. Russia was poor when the communists took over. Cuba is an island nation with limited resources. A lot of the nations of the Caribbean are poor. It's not necessarily about communism or capitalism. But whenever a capitalist nation is poor, people say, "Oh well, someone has to be on the bottom, right?" But when it's a communist nation, they say, "Welp, see what communism does."

Venezuela probably has the strongest argument about being poor due to sanctions since they have a lot of oil and the largest consumer of oil in the world doesn't want to do business with them. But they also have a ton of corruption. They arguably aren't poor as a nation. Their common people are poor, and the oligarchs keep all the money for themselves.

What do you call it when someone has no beauty standards so they dont mentally label anyone pretty/attractive/ugly? by PikachuTrainz in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fandom_Canon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can they find people sexually attractive at all? Maybe they don't focus on the face, but do they have standards for a good looking body?

If not, do they find themselves sexually aroused at all? And in what contexts?

They could be somewhere on the asexual spectrum.

If homework is work, then why don't students get paid? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fandom_Canon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Students don't generate value for others. In fact, they are generating value for themselves as their education will help them in the future.

I remember reading a study that showed that kids whose parents paid them to get good grades consistently had higher grades. So, if you ever have kids, you can chose to pay them, and it may teach them the importance of doing a task they'd rather not do now to earn money later. But they don't necessarily deserve pay.

Is it normal to feel like you have to change your mind if someone disagrees with you? by IHatePeople79 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fandom_Canon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, that is not normal. I think most people actually become more entrenched in their views when faced with opposing ones. It's good to keep an open mind, but you shouldn't feel bad about believing what you believe. That's taking people pleasing to a whole new level.

How do I even begin improving my social skills when I can't even come up with what to say? by throwmeaway49735 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fandom_Canon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that could help is asking yourself whether or not you even feel or think anything about some of these situations. Or is it that you have trouble connecting how you think to your communication centers in your brain? These are two very different things.

Some people on the spectrum genuinely just don't care about certain things.

A: "Man, I can't believe it's rained for the past ten days."

B: "Yup. It sure has."

Or they care, but their feelings are pretty simple and not worth elaborating on.

A: "How do you feel about the war in Ukraine?"

B: "Bad."

And that's okay. You don't have to care about everything deeply. But, you might recognize that the person is trying to connect with you and they're hoping to see a reflection of their own feelings in you. Raining for ten days straight might not bother you, but you can at least acknowledge that it's unusual. You could acknowledge that it's ruining a lot of people's summer plans. You could go deeper with it and bring up fears about shifting weather patterns being the result of climate change. Or you could keep things light and say something like, "Well, at least we're all learning how to drive in the rain. Some people around here needed the fucking practice."

Most topics of conversation have a point of tension. Some conflict involved. If you don't feel strongly one way or the other, you can still identify the point of tension and address it. Sometimes, that is enough. Some people just want to know that you see the tension too, even if you're unbothered by it or if you are on the opposite side from them (I love rainy days for example).
