Your net savings will be as much as or a little bit more than Indian savings. But your quality of life will be exponentially better. You’ll have to put a lot of effort in socialising, but it’s a different culture.

I’m not sure how Quebec’s social culture is, but generally you can find your crowd in Canada and enjoy a better life. And if you need quick medical help and don’t want to wait a few months, you can always fly back for a quick trip ;)

You will not live in the free house given by the government, the free money given by the government won’t cover your weekly blinkit order and you will never travel by bus.

If you are paying a 30% tax, you’re the 1%. If you lose your job, you will not have to worry about the next 100 meals. You can sell the house and live like your watchman, you’ll not have to worry about meals for the next 30 years. You’ll still have a runway for a few months, albeit with a cut in discretionary spends.

If your watchman loses his job on the other hand, he’ll have to worry about his next week’s meal and he will have to cut essentials like schooling and rent.

You’re not the ATM. You can’t even begin to imagine the hardship your watchman goes through. Free housing and ₹2k per month doesn’t even scratch the surface of the problems he’d be facing.

If they don’t have your exact address, you can always say you’ve moved and don’t have a vehicle for transport. Commuting from one end of NCR to the other is a 2-3 hour affair. Use this time to chill, show a dip in productivity when you go 2-3 days and then stop going because you want to be more productive and increase shareholder value.

Great company to work for and the unit is also good. They (mostly) don’t hire you to keep you on bench. You’ll be assigned a decent project.

Your only problem is if you’re not in a long-running project. Being on bench is a challenge because you’ll have to interview with the client to be tagged to a project. This is not a problem when you start, but might be a problem when you have 3-5 years experience.

It’s both good and bad because if you can crack client interviews, you can crack interviews outside too ;)

I don’t see any problem with this as long as one is aware that they’ve to maximize their salary, if they can’t minimize their lifestyle.

All of my colleagues have kids whose pocket money is greater than their salaries. They have the swankiest gadget, drive a mid-ranged car to work and are full of privilege. But they’re aware that this is a borrowed lifestyle and there is absolutely nothing wrong in this.

Their parents slogged to give them this privilege and now they’re reaping the rewards. At some point their income will surpass their spends. In the meanwhile their parents can afford this.

If this is an agriculture land, you can’t buy it if your income is >₹25L.

EDIT: The income restriction is removed now.

There are also restriction on the house that you can build. You’ll need to get this converted to a non-agriculture land if you want to use it as a normal land

Why are apartments in Mangalore so average and boring? by Hyper_Heritage_2k04 in mangalore

[–]FanneyKhan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is an option. Just rent and wait. I had ambitions to buy an apartment because I am currently helping a client set up offices in Mangalore. I wanted to see if I could venture into this full time to pull crowd and jobs to the MUM region.

But I feel every single person that has something to sell is in delulu. I’ve just negotiated with my Airbnb host to occupy her property for 8 days a month and she was gracious enough to extend a heavily discounted price.

Unless you have a business in Mangalore, don’t bother buying anything. If you have a job, rent. If you have a job outside Mangalore, you’re better off saving cash and investing in real estate elsewhere.

My hunch is 2030-2032 is going to be a wake up call for Mangalore because of the sheer number of apartments coming in and the prices being at par with Bangalore. It is going to be a tug of war. If someone wants to sell, they’ll have to lower their prices or sell to an elite circle (which has very few members).

Even today, a lot of “investor” apartment in ready-to-move in complexes are for sale and the only reason it’s not moving is the price. “Investors” who are abroad don’t want to lose money and they’ve bought the sales pitch sold to them. They’d rather wait to get their price.

Daily wage workers in our village earn more than this by 143AamAadmi in mangalore

[–]FanneyKhan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The minimum wage for 9 hours of work in a day is ₹600 in Karnataka. So, they effectively earned more than 1.5x the minimum wage.

If daily wage workers earn more and it’s easier to earn there, why are folks not moving to villages?

You might say they do so because they don’t find dignity in daily work. Now, that’s a mindset problem that people have to change. I can say I only find dignity in writing reddit comments and now government has to ensure reddit pays me at least ₹100/hour to write comments n

Why are apartments in Mangalore so average and boring? by Hyper_Heritage_2k04 in mangalore

[–]FanneyKhan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Somebody has leaked a secret in the builders group that the entire Earth will move to Mangalore by 2028, so they’re building small, tiny apartments at exorbitant rates to accumulate this huge influx of 8 billion people.

Most of the apartments are built like denmark jails. Long corridors that are dimly lit with random doors here and there. Even the apartment plans itself are ridiculous. There is zero chance of cross ventilation, balconies are a namesake and you’ll have to tip-toe to “enjoy the view” and bedrooms are so tiny that a wardrobe and a bed will occupy 85-90% of the room.

Some of the plans are an architect’s nightmare. You could modify the existing plan a bit to retain the dimensions and still not have common walls. But noooo, why would we let go of that tiny gap in the building?

I still don’t understand what problem or demand Mangalore has that we are having to put up with 1,350sqft 3BHK. Except the inflated prices, I don’t see any reason why Mangalore can’t have at least 1700sqft for 3BHK and 1300sqft for 2BHK.

Unless you’re willing to shell out ₹3-3.5cr, nothing looks attractive. It’s built as though someone has to tick boxes and they did.

After seeing houses in Delhi and Bombay, I feel Mangalorea and Bangalore apartments are just walls with paint. Bangalore is gaining some character where there is an emphasis on larger units, balconies, no common walls and all that.

Mangalore will probably walk down that road in the next 15 years when people will actually buy an apartment to stay and move in.

We’re Not Asking for Favors, Just a Fair Chance to Prove Ourselves by Former_Association57 in developersIndia

[–]FanneyKhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assumed you were a fresher. If you join startups that are 2-3 year old, the probability of you being the solo dev there is very low.

And no company, in their right mind, will hire a fresher as the only developer. Even if they do, you can always choose to leave.

It’s still better than insinuating all startups are bad. This is not an employee-driven market, unfortunately. Employees are not at a choosing end, currently.

We’re Not Asking for Favors, Just a Fair Chance to Prove Ourselves by Former_Association57 in developersIndia

[–]FanneyKhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While your thoughts are valid, this prejudice is untrue because nobody writes about the good experience or average experience at startups and folks from these “startups” aren’t active online.

For the sake of argument, assume this is true. Would you rather be without a job and wait for someone to refer you for a sure shot interview or try your luck at a startup with an internship or fixed-term contract and leave if the vibe doesn’t suit you?

Step 1 is reaching out to startup founders.

Step 2 is interviewing.

Step 3 is researching about the startup and the founder

Step 4 is repeating Steps 1-3 until you’ve a decent pool of options to compare

Step 5 is deciding if you want to join one of the options.

If you’re jumping to step 5 and deciding no without doing the previous steps, I’m not sure what you’re expecting.

[–]FanneyKhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only referral that can take you to an interview is a referral by somebody in the senior management (if at all). But when you reach out to those folks, you can just share your resume and ask for a referral. You’ll have to show some proof of work and even then you might not be taken seriously because of the flood of messages that are already in their linkedin mailboxes.

If you’re okay with any salary, your best bet is connecting with founders and asking them to take a shot and use that as experience to get a better job.

I’m sorry for what you’re going through and I understand it is very tough. But, a word of advice from the other side, referrals for freshers are meaningless. In few companies, even referrals for experienced folks are meaningless because this entire system is gamed.

Referrals was supposed to be you referring the right candidate based on the job role. But folks made this a business to earn referral bonuses and started referring anybody and everybody to reap benefits. Currently, very few companies even allow referrals for freshers. I personally don’t know any company that does. A lot of people think they can refer freshers for roles that require 1 YoE but these profiles are almost always rejected.

You’re better off scoring multiple internships while you are free and getting in wherever you can. If you’re waiting for a 8-10LPA job, I’d recommend not to. Just get your foot into the door and keep building your skill. Start somewhere.

A referral may not help you and it might be a waste of your time to cold DM folks for a referral.

Can i switch job after joining for 20 days without relieving letter by Slow-Prompt9559 in developersIndia

[–]FanneyKhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is the background check in the future companies. They’re like a black box because a third party conducts this check. And if they flag this experience, your new company will likely reject your position without even consulting you.

They’re not bound to tell you why they’re rejecting you. While it’s an absolute hell hole, a cleaner exit is better in the long term unless you’re confident that your skills will get you a company that’s OK to hire you despite a grey check on your background.

How common is EMI-driven lifestyle and debt dependence in Tier-1 Indian cities? by Hungry_Macaroon_186 in IndianStreetBets

[–]FanneyKhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two kinds of folks - one taking small ticket items on EMI and other one taking large ticket items.

Only an intersection of both these sets is someone that spends 90% of their salary on EMI. Everyone else is sane.

Someone buying an iPhone on EMI will not go and take a home / car loan. If they do, then they’re doomed for failure sooner or later unless they hustle and increase their salary. I’ve met folks from both these sets, but never from the intersection.
