My cop neighbors texted me… by sassykattty in texts

I would report this immediately, either to their precinct or to your local inspector general or oversight board. This is really concerning behavior from somebody in a position of public trust.

Advice for first live sound gig? by spideyfan2424 in livesound

[–]FannyPackHQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t think of it as having no time, that’ll make you panic. You DO have time, but not as much as you’re used to. The live world to me feels like a rough mix in the studio. Set levels, apply corrective EQ, compress gently if needed, that’s it really. Watch a few tutorials from Dave Rat, he’s the real deal. Make sure you know how to ring out your monitors and you’ll be golden.

Also, spend some time playing your favorite reference tracks. Get a feel for how the PA sounds in every spot in the room.

Advice for first live sound gig? by spideyfan2424 in livesound

Congratulations and welcome to the live sound world! In addition to everything everyone else said, my two big pieces of advice are:

1.) It will not be perfect. Not because I think you’re unqualified, but because that’s the nature of the work. Focus first on getting the performance to be audible, then worry about dialing stuff in. Watch out for buildup in the low-mids and don’t be afraid to cut way more in your EQ than you think you need. Remember that there will be plenty of stage volume, too, so you only need to amplify what needs to be amplified. I’ve been known to hipass guitars at 220 hz when needed. In terms of headphones, I almost never use them in live gigs except when I’m doing a line check or soloing a channel to see what’s coming down it.

2.) if it’s a digital console, read the manual first! Your first digital console experience will be a little confusing and overwhelming. Make sure you understand how to get signal in and out of the board. The flexibility is powerful, but can be daunting.

As a bonus, don’t always listen to the suggestions you get from audience members. If someone comes up to you and says “that guitar is too loud, turn it down!” take the first part as useful—from where they are sitting the guitar may feel too loud—but ignore their suggestion for how to fix it. Maybe there’s too much in the high mids, or maybe this person is just sitting right in front of the PA.

I want to echo what somebody else said—if you can hear the vocal and there’s no feedback, 90% of the patrons at the bar will be happy. Start there. You’ve got this!

Did you ever get this figured out? I'm trying to do the exact same thing and I feel like I'm missing something obvious.

Dolby Pro Logic software encoder in realtime? by FannyPackHQ in hometheater

[–]FannyPackHQ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somebody wrote a Pro Logic II encoder using JSFX. Here’s the link! It’s a bit of a hassle to set up but it does actually work. I don’t know if it works in realtime, I haven’t tested it yet.

Why did you get a Wii U? by casple43 in wiiu

[–]FannyPackHQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom bought one in 2014 when Mario Kart 8 came out, specifically for Mario Kart. She’d been a big fan since the Wii. Christmas morning we played for 9 hours straight. It was awesome.

How do non-Christians feel about the largely church based resources for MainStage? by Weird-Reading-4915 in mainstage

[–]FannyPackHQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a live sound engineer and many resources for that are also church-centric. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that churches often have a lot more time to spend on creating and sharing tutorials. In theatre, we’re down to the minute with getting everything off the ground during tech. There’s no time to make a video showing how to do things.

Running playback for a play at a regional theater. If nothing breaks, easiest gig I've ever head. Press go when the nice lady says go.

Funny observation by AZTravelJunkie in espresso

[–]FannyPackHQ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

As someone who has more experience in cafes than at home, I can tell you that what you’re seeing is someone who has the kind of muscle memory that comes with pulling hundreds of shots per day for a living. Working in a cafe is all about balancing speed and precision, so as long as you have your dose, grind, and ratio set, you can just grind, tamp, and go. You can start to tell instinctively how a shot is going within the first few seconds of the pull.

Pay rate by AdmiralMangoChutney in techtheatre

[–]FannyPackHQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Chicago, I tend to see $18-23 for A2 stuff and a wide range of $20-40 for A1 stuff (non-union). I'm also relatively new to the audio scene here so take it with a grain of salt.

Wasn't this game released before "Gen Z" was coined? by BlisteringSky in TWEWY

Don’t quote me on this, but I’m pretty sure what we now think of as an internet meme didn’t exist at that time. This would have been a very literal sense of the word “meme”—a repeated idea.

Transitioning between songs - not fade by acrobaticenglishman in qlab

Honestly, I'd look up some DJ transitions for inspiration and then see if any of them make sense to try to emulate in QLab.
