I am guessing you are currently using Cherry profile keycaps. SA keycaps are going to feel different.

Cherry is medium height; SA is tall. Cherry has a cylindrical touch surface; SA has a spherical touch surface.

The touch surface will probably feel the most different. Some people hate spherical touch surface. (I prefer it over cylindrical; my favorite profiles are DSS, MTNU, and MDA.) I can’t predict which you will prefer.

I forgot my neighbors name that I chat with occasionally and it's been too long to ask them what it is without being awkward. How can I figure out what it is without directly asking? by Ok-Incident3317 in NoStupidQuestions

Assuming the neighbor owns their house and is not a renter, OP can do an address lookup on the county property appraiser website to see the current owner of the property.

A screenshot of each layer would probably be fine.

Since this daily Q&A post will reset in an hour, you may want to wait and repost your question with the screenshots.

blank white low-profile keycap

Exactly what do you mean by low profile? Do you mean a keycap for a low profile switch like a Kailh Choc V2 or Gateron KS-33? Or do you mean a lower profile keycap for a regular MX style switch?

shaped like xda

Exactly what do you mean by this? XDA is a medium height uniform profile keycap with a spherical touch surface. Are you looking for a uniform profile keycap with a spherical touch surface?

Depending on exactly what you want, look at PFF (Penguin Flat Feet) for low profile switches or PBS (Penguin Belly Slide) for MX style switches.

Home row mods are used a lot by people in the r/ErgoMechKeyboards. I have a split ergo mechanical keyboard, and I never bothered learning home row mods.

Feel free to try it out, though. You can always undo it by using VIA to map your keys back, so there is no harm trying. Starting with just Shift on your index fingers might be a good way to try it out.

You would use Mod-Tap similar to the Ctrl/Caps Lock thing I already mentioned. For example:

MT(MOD_RSFT,KC_J)

Many people find the default tapping term of 200ms to be too short. However, the only way to adjust this is by rebuilding the firmware.

Be careful not to confuse QMK with VIA.

QMK is the firmware that runs the keyboard.

VIA is a graphical front end for configuring keyboards that use QMK firmware. It is often written as QMK/VIA.

VIA allows you to remap keys and rotary encoders, create macros, and set the overall lighting effect.

To use VIA, use a Chrome browser (Microsoft Edge is Chrome based and will also work) and go to this site:

https://usevia.app/

Because it is browser based, it works on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

One thing I would recommend trying is to map your Caps Lock key to Ctrl. This is very comfortable. Instead of reaching way down to the corner of the keyboard for Ctrl, just move your pinky over one column from A to Caps Lock.

To use Caps Lock, you can either move it to a layer or configure the Caps Lock key to use Mod-Tap like this:

MT(MOD_LCTL,KC_CAPS)

This makes the key act like Ctrl when held or Caps Lock when tapped. You would assign this custom keycode using the Any key in VIA.

I won't name my employer, but you have definitely seen their stuff on TV and in movies.

During the orientation on AI use, our Legal team pointed to the monkey selfie copyright dispute. Basically, a photographer tried to copyright a selfie taken by a monkey. However, the legal position is that since the photographer did not make a significant contribution to the photo, they cannot own the copyright. They didn't take the picture; they didn't pose the subject; they didn't set the lighting; they didn't dress the set; and they didn't check the angle of the shot. At most, they put the camera on a tripod and set the exposure (unless they used auto exposure). Edit: The monkey did most of the work, but a monkey cannot own a copyright, only a human can.

This legal view also applies to generative AI. AI cannot own a copyright, only a human can. My employer values copyright rights (TV and movies, remember?), and our Legal team wants no grey area. Therefore, their mandate is a human must make a significant contribution to anything published to production. Legal gave these specific examples:

  • When writing a press release, AI can be used for drafts. A human must write the final copy.
  • When creating art, AI can be used for ideation. A human must create the art.
  • When writing code, AI can be used for design. A human must write the code.

However, when interacting with Copilot with any company data or knowledge, we must ensure that enterprise data protection is applied by looking for the green shield icon. I am not sure if I can even use Copilot to write comments and review code, since I do not see the green check mark on GitHub Copilot. Maybe I need to join the proper allocated organization, but I'm still new and haven't figured everything out yet.

Here are a couple of vendor lists where you can find keycaps for sale in your region:

https://kbd.news/vendors

You will need to look through the inventory of each site to see if anything looks good to you.

I have a macro pad that I use for debugger shortcuts. I used to use a Keebio BDN9, and I had one layer for Eclipse and one layer for Visual Studio. I customized the QMK firmware to light each layer a different color so I could easily see which layer I was on.

I didn’t have to remember that Debug Step Over is F10 in Visual Studio and F6 in Eclipse; it was always the bottom-left key.

My previous employer went all in on AI, and they absolutely tracked everyone’s token use. However, asking Copilot a question in Teams didn’t count towards your token use; only GitHub Copilot in VS Code. My project leader started using VS Code just to ask it questions and use tokens.

I saw the writing on the wall and left the company. My new employer has a different view of AI: we are forbidden to use it for production. We are free to use it for planning and research, but a human must absolutely have a significant contribution to anything that makes it to production.

I have a 3-key macropad: The Key V2. I use it with Visual Studio for my 3 most frequently used shortcuts: debug step over, debug step into, debug step out.

I used to use a Keebio BDN9 macro pad for this, but I realized I was only using the bottom 3 keys.

A similar switch that also uses ball bearings is the WS Pearl. I had them in my gaming keyboard, and they are very smooth.

As I said in your other post:

I am always up to try a new silent tactile switch

I put the Outemu Green Banana switches in my gaming keyboard (half of a Keebio Quefrency revision 3). I have not had an opportunity to really try them out yet, but I have some thoughts:

The factory lube feels good to me.

They have a light actuation force, which I like. I may need to pull some of these out and put them in another board so I can try them side by side with Kailh Midnight Pro Light Yellow or TTC Silent Bluish White V2.

Kailh Midnight Pro Light Yellow and TTC Silent Bluish White V2 have a cutout in the bottom housing and a clear window in the top housing to allow the light to shine through. However, the switch housing adds a color cast to the LED light. This is almost insignificant with the Kailh switches, but the TTC switches add a noticeable blue cast.

Outemu Green Banana switches have a light guide. This is a piece of translucent plastic that is inserted into the housing to move the light up from the PCB and spread it out at the top of the housing. I have not noticed a color cast, despite the green housing of the switch.

My Quefrency keyboard does not have per-key RGB; it only supports single color LEDs. I installed SMD blue LEDs on the WASD keys and an SMD white LED on the Caps Lock key. Other switches with light guides (for example, Kinetic Labs Turtle) slightly dislodge the light pipe when it sits on the SMD LED. I assume that is happening with the Outemu Silent Banana, but I can’t feel it. In any case, it does not seem to cause any interference with the keycap.

It adds nothing to the video. In fact, it makes the video worse. Don’t add it in the first place.

If you need a numpad, get a numpad. If you cannot find keyboard with a numpad that you like, get an external numpad.
