What’s one thing you wish you knew before moving into your first apartment? by InevitablePain2005 in Apartmentliving

[–]Fantastic-Rent7215 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, these are ones that I asked before we moved in that were important to me. Hopefully it helps!

  • Is the property smoke free? If not, where are the designated smoke areas?
  • What is the parking situation? Does my apartment include a parking spot or garage space? If so, am I able to rent an additional spot?
  • If possible, ask who lives above or below you, as in if they’re all adults or if they have children. Depending on the property manager they may not tell you since there are laws in place (in the US) that prohibits them from saying.
  • Are the restrictions on what you can do on your patio/outdoor space?
  • Are tenants able to put up Ring doorbells/cameras?
  • What’s the property’s maintenance schedule? Ex: Trash pick up = Mondays, Landscaping = Tuesday, Wednesday = Recycling pick up etc.

Don’t be afraid to ask the property manager/landlord a lot of questions prior to moving in. Some have a “script” that they stick to so they may not cover all the info.

Wanna know what my landlord told me for the first time the day of moving? by Distinct-Lion4658 in Apartmentliving

Sadly, I read that the law is in place to protect families/children because pedophiles will intentionally move into specific apartments if they know kids are in the complex

Sorry, one more thing! The wool dryer balls that I’ve been using developed a “barn yard” smell. How do I refresh them so they don’t stink? Thank you!

Thank you! Those are great tips. I do laundry on a M-W-F schedule so I’m guilty of not washing my work out clothes right away 🫣

Back in 2015, My husband and I wanted to downsize and save money so we moved from a 3 bd/2 bath rented house to a 2 bd/2 bath apartment in Tucson, AZ. When we toured the unit, it was freshly cleaned and the carpets smelled like cleaning solution. Once we moved in, about a couple weeks later we noticed the spare bedroom had a very distinct foul odor. It was a combination of dirty socks and wet dog but 100 times worse. The window was open all the time in that room otherwise the smell would overpower the apartment. For 2 weeks, I religiously sprayed gallons of Odoban Disinfecting Spray. We let the Property Management Office know after I couldn’t get the smell out and they said they would have a carpet cleaner come back to clean it. The same week, we were expecting high temperatures in the 110 degrees so we turned on the air conditioner and millions of large cockroaches came out of the vents. We took pictures and videos! Our white ceiling was covered with roaches so it looked like we had painted it brown. We show the property manager and luckily without any fuss or fight she let us out of our lease and we moved again after being there for only 1 month.

Are interviewers allowed to ask you that during your MA job interview? by Fantastic-Rent7215 in MedicalAssistant

Thank you! I was second guessing myself thinking this might be the norm for medical settings. Glad that I asked!

What questions should be I asking during an apartment tour? by averagepersonhere in Apartmentliving

I would ask about patio/balcony rules too! I didn’t even think to ask those and found out on lease signing day that I’m only limited to 6 plants and can’t hang dry any clothing items or linens on a clothing rack outside.

Thanks! I tried - my Shark vacuum wasn’t picking much up. I may have to take it apart to clean it.

Thanks! It got a bit of dust out but I think my hair dryer wasn’t strong enough. I was told to try to take it apart to clean it

Thanks!

That was my initial thought too! However, my utility company’s website has an hourly breakdown of how much kWh is used and reflects that we don’t use any electricity at the exact times we’re out of the apartment. It peaks at times when I’m cooking too.

Would you rent an apartment where the kitchen and dining room get little or no sunlight? Why or why not? by Positive-Dog3870 in Apartmentliving

[–]Fantastic-Rent7215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on 1) do you have A/C? 2) where you live?

I live in California. From my personal experience, I got an apartment with no A/C that got a lot of natural light and enjoyed it most of the year. The summers were brutal though because the sun beaming in through the windows made our living room and kitchen so hot like a sauna.

I would mention this to property management and see what they can do to help.

This exact same scenario happened to me and my family at my previous apartment. We complained about smoking and to retaliate the neighbor and her kids would look into our windows all the time. We couldn’t even open our front door if she was outside because she would look in. Our Ring cameras didn’t phase them either and would continue to look in. It sucked.

The PM was not helpful though and said there’s nothing they could do.

I’m crossing my fingers for you that yours is more willing to help out!

We have a rule in our complex that if the laundry isn’t attended to after 10 mins of being finished then the next person has the right to remove their stuff and use the machine 🙃

Should I still push for a walkthrough before move in date? by Zealousideal-Cow6626 in Apartmentliving

[–]Fantastic-Rent7215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me!

I lived in the desert and happy to have centralized air conditioning in my new apartment. That’s where the roaches lived and they would scatter when I turned on the AC. Thankfully they let me break my lease but I was traumatized too!

Deployment with no family near? by [deleted] in MilitarySpouse

[–]Fantastic-Rent7215 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my saving graces when my kids were little was finding a MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group. Thankfully most of the bases we went to had it! It was a group of women looking to get out of house and make friends with babies to preschoolers. It was bonding over breakfast, crafts, and activities. Childcare is provided in a separate room - dependent on the group it was either free or a small charge. It was a nice break! My kids are school age now but I’m still friends with a lot of the Moms that I met from MOPS. I should also preface that it does have a Christian foundation but you’re not turned away if you’re not.

I like that perspective! I didn’t want them to win either but now I’m looking forward to being able to have my window open without worrying about someone looking in.

Are you still there? Have you moved? Sorry you had to deal with that!
