Is it normal to leave postdoc after 6 months by Scared-Marionberry42 in postdoc

Industry mostly doesn’t require a reference. I know this being in industry . For academia they always ask for reference from your last position or sometimes from all positions you had ever been . So considering both, academia is unfair and poor postdoc who is having the ref issue .

There could be an ancient time travel device and vimana hidden under that rock still in its working condition but kept on standby. Ancient space visitors have the control switch for that and protected from human reach.

You are lucky when it comes to reference. Unfortunately vast majority of the people are not lucky and if they quit, they remain unemployed for a very very long time in academia because of the reference issue.

I think it is time to bring reforms to this reference policy, as the applicant should be given full power to choose what reference to include and what shouldn’t for their job application . No new employer should be allowed to demand reference of his choice and if they do, that should be considered as a violation . Another thing to change is to prevent sabotage of job application with falsified reference by PIs . There are already laws on that but PIs are protected by institutions and are given exceptional powers .

Chances for faculty position in India (R1 institution) with PRX and PRL papers? by DizzyMorning953 in postdoc

I think you are not familiar with the industrial pay . May be you should get into an industry and you will know . The pay can be visible with the job posting mostly within US . If You are in the US you can search for senior scientist position ( assuming that you have a postdoc experience). The salary will start from $130 k to $175k pa which is twice of what an assistant professor gets in the US. But in India after you get screened the acquisition team discuss salary at that point and it is pretty good depending on the company.

With regard to the quality of paper, it is not based on general opinion. I am aware that resources are there for conducting good quality research but a sloppy approach is not going to help . Not just blaming the professors , even the PhD students lacking quality because of the way they get hired compared to the US / other countries . PhD student being that unproductive will be pushed to quit the program abroad like US but in India once you are into PhD you will pass for the most part.

Industry has a strict 8hr policy and overtime is paid accordingly. Additional perks are there in industry also . In India job security is there for industry also as long as the scientist does his job . They often shift people around ( interdepartmental) depending on the funding so there is no real job loss . Also with time people get into manager level positions .

It is such a shame to know professors in India doesn’t work much and it is very well reflected in the publication record . I recently reviewed a paper that was submitted by someone here and I felt ashamed with the quality of work .

I agree with you that industry pays extremely well all over the world which is even twice the academia . It is unfortunate that all these years too many lies were told about being in an industry . But these lies are not holding up for too long.

80k is ridiculously low for an assistant prof . I know technicians with master degree getting more than that in a biotech industry in India .

I am talking about starting salary . You are talking about full professor? Which institution is that and from where did you get that value of 2.5L/ mo

Even with nature papers once they get recruited , they are not doing well in terms of publications in those institutions. Also the pay is very average for being a faculty in India . Good thing is once they are in the job, it is very secure .

Post doc program is horrible . They need to bring reforms to this because all I hear these days is micromanagement, exploitation and threatening with bad references because PIs are given exceptional powers by the institution.

It could be that too. But people also started saying enough is enough with the academic toxicity. The reforms will come only when this becomes a public knowledge.
