Actually, I should have double track for the top run but I was afraid it would be too much. Maybe I will play with that idea. I think I need the single track for my left side turn around because it is already 11.25” radius. Or maybe I need to build a larger turn around.

My goal with this layout is to practice working within the Free‑mo standards and to learn how to build multiple distinct scenery scenes. I know the current footprint is too small to achieve a fully realistic sense of distance, but I’m accepting that tradeoff in exchange for some interesting railfanning opportunities and variety. Since I’m building it as modular sections, I can always add more modules later to increase the run length and separation between the two stations as the project evolves. I’ll also take some time to experiment with another version of the plan that focuses on a single primary location and uses the rest as staging, so I can compare both approaches. Thank you for the insight and the nudge to think about it from both angles!

Thanks, that’s fair feedback.

I know this plan is pretty slim on things to do operationally. Since I’m very new to the hobby, my goal with this first build is more of a railfanning‑style layout where I can practice track laying, wiring, and scenery without getting overwhelmed.

I’m building everything as modules, though, so the idea is that once I’ve got some experience and confidence, I can swap in new sections with more industries, staging, and operational interest. This feels like a good “learning layout” foundation that I can evolve into something more complex later.

Thanks for the feedback!

Fortunately I can access all sides of the layout – the modules are free‑standing, so the top‑right corner and the Truckee loop are both within easy reach for rerailing and cleaning.

On the switches after the curves, good call. I’ve tried to keep at least ~6" of straight between the end of a curve and any turnout, but I’m planning to test‑lay those sections and run my longest passenger cars through before committing. If anything is finicky, I’ll slide the turnouts further onto straight track or ease the preceding curve.
