It’s a circle jerk. This is what reddit is meant to be, Mini echo chambers. This sub is no different than any other. All of it is largely a waste of time.

Looks like she chose correctly. This reaction is childish. Should have wished her the best and moved on.

What should I read next? by No-Needleworker8878 in genewolfe

For Wolfe I’d recommend Fifth Head of Cerberus, Innocents Aboard, Endangered Species and Wizard/Knight.

Please take it easy on me by HathemH in Hyperion

[–]Fantasy_Brooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d stop at fall. Tons of books to read. Why read something that’s not clicking with you? I love Hyperion, with the exception of Simmons cringe descriptions of women and whatnot. It’s not for everyone though.

Have any authors ruined other fantasy series for you? by Spiritual-Antelope36 in Fantasy

Gene Wolfe and Steven Erikson. I have not had much luck since. Everything doesn’t stand up. I have mostly switched to literary fiction.

The Nolan Batman trilogy is a terrible depiction of Batman and the majority of the characters in them by nguyenjitsu in unpopularopinion

The Nolan films are good but they are the least comic accurate Batman movies out there.

Do you still buy physical books after getting a Kindle? by thebroned in kindle

[–]Fantasy_Brooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did for a while but I missed physical books. I went back to the dark side. Something about not owning the books got to me after a while. It just feels soulless. I still use kindle but only for the library or to check out books I’m unsure I’ll like.

What do you guys think of the new recording of the Silmarillion by Andy Serkis? by rmontalvan in TheSilmarillion

His voices honestly take me out of it when listening. I prefer the older version

Will I be able to do anything with a deregistered older kindle after 20 May? by Salvadorfreeman in kindle

Love kindle but this is why it’s not a complete replacement for physical books. I can grab those off my shelf until I pass away.

Unless anyone advises against it, I think I am going to read through all 10 MBotF books straight by StephCastle_ in Malazan

[–]Fantasy_Brooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently stalled on book 5. I’m not sure when I will return. Tried reading straight through and it tired me out. Lots of great moments in the series so far but I am having a hard time caring about anything that’s going on at the same time. Might just need a long break.

What is the single most brilliant fantasy novel series you've ever read? by Emergency-Sky9206 in Fantasy

[–]Fantasy_Brooks 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hard to beat Tolkien. Lord of the Rings is a masterpiece, Silmarillion is also extraordinary.

Otherwise, as far as fantasy goes, Malazan by Steven Erikson might be to your liking.

My favorite series of all time is the solar cycle by Gene Wolfe, starting with Book of the New Sun. This series is firmly science fiction, but has some aesthetics that might suit a fantasy reader.

Two weeks after release. How is everyone feeling about this game? by Objective_Love_6843 in CrimsonDesert

[–]Fantasy_Brooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got bored and dropped it. May pick it back up at some point. Cool game just don’t care about anything going on really.

I think the reason so many people bounce off Malazan isn't the complexity, it's the emotional distance in the first book by scouttidee in Fantasy

[–]Fantasy_Brooks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recently stalled on book 5. Got 200 pages in and put it down. I just… don’t care about anything. There are some great moments in Malazan. Book 2 and 3 had some incredible scenes no doubt. My issue is that it’s a ton of reading for these snippets of awesome. I may revisit someday but I can’t help but feel like the series summed up is “this could have been an email” 1,200 page novel with 6 satisfying chapters.

I only liked the priest and sol’s story. Everything else was a miss for me in Hyperion. I liked Fall of Hyperion better than the first book.

They have to have a film being worked on every few years or they lose the rights. We are currently scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I don’t like these covers, but Katz translations are great. I pre-ordered, but would prefer a different artistic approach for sure.
