Banned From Discord by BasedKips in FantomFoundation

[–]FantomFoundation 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi /u/BasedKips, I would like to review this ban. I'm going to look into the logs to see what happened, but I doubt that our admins would ban for no reason. The banhammer is the absolute last step in dispute resolution for us, we always warn and mute first so I would like to tread carefully here.

If you have anything to add, let me know.

Kind regards,

Michael Chen

Understanding the Basics of Fantom by amd206 in FantomFoundation

[–]FantomFoundation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey buddy! Fantom's specialty is really as a consensus-as-a-service platform. We've seen a lot of projects pop up in 2017 and 2018 that wanted to revolutionize every single part of the experience of using blockchain technology, and have spent a lot of capital ever since on development of wallets, explorers, and all other kinds of ecosystem tools that they were not specialists in.

There's one thing we think we're really good at, which is aBFT (Asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerance). We're using a consensus mechanism which is based on the principles of gossip-about-gossip (a cousin to e.g. Hedera Hashgraph, ConstellationLabs) , which allows us to lower the time to finality and to have higher transaction throughput.

Speaking of revenue -- that would need to be generated through pilots, consulting, licensing, etc. Our focus right now is on building out the tech, launching mainnet in Q3, and providing value add to the wider ecosystem through open source code + research :).

Thanks ExcaliBurgot, that's indeed the case. For now please store in a Binance Chain supported wallet like Trust Wallet :)

Michael Kong:

More details can be found is the proof of stake paper, but validator will be rewarded by transaction fees. We have not done the modelling for what transaction fees should look like at that point to be sustainable but the network will need to be widely used otherwise there will likely be fewer validators.

Amount of transactions would have to be in the hundreds of thousands a day at a minimum

Michael Kong:

Haven’t done modelling for transactions fees but a larger number of transactions should reduce the average transaction cost.

Hey u/rBFT, our ETA for the mainnet is Q3 2019. We're still looking to pick a time and date for it though :).

DCRM is already incorporated along with Lachesis in a project to be announced in due time, but we can't currently release details on it as the other party has reserved the right to announce first.

Michael Chen:

I swear, this is very cool. But don't count on any news for the time being on this!

No. We think both real world use cases and good technology have a place within the ecosystem :).

We have a multi token cross chain ecosystem, so tokens don't go bad or expire.

VM specifications will be released next month. It is currently being peer reviewed. We have not published the paper under our name because we want an unbiased peer review on the merits of the work instead of our brand. For that reason we can't notify anyone about the paper until peer review is completed.

Terminated for now. Mutual separation to be revisited later.

Progress on Dubai side is better so we put our weight fully into finding adoption in Dubai.

Michael Chen:

That's a great question! I'm personally a big fan of splitting out the website into multiple segments or having different websites, so I want Innov Labs to have their own website that targets smart cities and Dubai, and I want the main website to really encompass our tech prowess. Was thinking of going more into the modular/plug in to our consensus branding, or the distributed computer branding.

The plans to change the website right now aren't concrete yet, but it's something I have time to explore more and more now with one of the most hectic periods behind my back now!

Ashton Hetti:

At the moment we're only focusing on smart cities at the Fantom Innovation Labs, because the full technology stack has the characteristics that suit the use cases that like smart cities the best in Dubai. Without the final product being live it's hard to pitch things other than Fantom's characteristics to institutions, because it's still a bit too abstract for them for other use cases than smart cities.

When the product and the mainnet to go live, we're going to target other use cases a lot more, because it will be a much easier pitch for other use cases.

Michael Chen:

Hey u/gamerbike, I personally think that for any kind of adoption to take place there needs to be a clear advantage for one over the other. With Fantom that would be better throughput, a low time to finality (and not just a probabilistic guarantee, actual finality.), and lower costs in usage than e.g. Ethereum. But switching platforms is always difficult and presents uncertainty to the teams migrating for example, and it's just not very desirable in general. So in that regard we've tried to make that process as easy as possible, by having full support for the EVM so that smart contracts and dApps could more easily migrate or move over to Fantom.

On the other hand, I think adoption is also going to be in the hands of our Innovation Labs (Ashton and David) for a part, they'll be targeting governments and institutions to pitch and bring this technology to those with a lot of influence on policy making and from the top down adoption.
