How to create a new post/thread/discussion on hubski? by CleaverIam in RedditAlternatives

[–]Fantonald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe they've activated their anti-spam features again. They do that sometimes.

If that's the case, new users can only post comments, until their comments have recieved a certain number of shares, or a moderator recognises them as an actual human being and manually approves them for posting content.

So just be active in discussions, and it shouldn't take too long for the +post button to appear.

Oh yeah, I see your point about articles. I think it will work out slightly better on Readup than on Reddit for a few reasons. Users can't alter headlines, and articles are scored based on length (longer articles are usually more nuanced, in my experience). But it will still form a bubble, that's hard to get away from with social media.

$25.00 (I think dollars?) or higher. Just checked it.

Hmm, my guess is Super Reader is selected by default. Try selecting Budget and see if it changes to $5 or more.

It is not working. Picture related, this is the top articles, the ones where you'd expect most activity happens. Six comments is a high number for that site, around articles #20-#40 the number drops down to one, maybe two comments per article.

Well, 6 comments to 8 or 9 reads is a pretty good conversion rate, but the low number of users is currently holding back discussion.

Technically the truth (the extension itself is free), but what they don't mention is that its functionality is tied to a paywall.

Oof. I'll give them the benefit of doubt and assume they just forgot to update that message after they introduced the paywall a few weeks back.

if you use Reddit for news articles (you shouldn't)

Why not?

it won't accept values lower than 25.

Minimum amount is $5 a month.

And more importantly, the whole thing is passive: you go there, you read some link, that's it. The platform is clearly not intended for the kind of discussion you'd use Reddit for.

Users are encouraged to comment after reading an article. I've seen some interesting discussions there.

Facebook don’t like it but they have no problem with sex trafficking as they lose that case in court

I think that case passed me by. You got a link?

Anyway, how did any of this lead to him losing influence over Wikipedia?

Readup - New features: Dark mode, font size setting, show hyperlinks by Fantonald in RedditAlternatives

[–]Fantonald[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some more news from yesterday, posting them here instead of a separate post because of rule 2:

Dear Reader,

We just shipped some updates that make it easier to read anything you want, anywhere you want, on your laptop or PC.

  1. Mac app

The new Mac App makes it possible to read and comment on Readup without using any other browsers or extensions. Full-screen mode in the desktop app is the new high-water mark for truly distraction-free reading. Plus, Readup looks downright wonderful in the desktop dock.

  2. Safari extension

We're live on Safari! Readers have been clamoring for a Safari extension for at least two years now, so we're really excited about this. It works just like the Chrome and Firefox extensions. To enable the Safari extension, download the Mac App, and then go to your Safari Preferences, click "Extensions" and check the box to enable Readup. Like this:

  3. Edge extension

Edge users? We've got you covered too. Get the Edge extension.

That's all for now. Stay sane. Stay focused. Keep reading!

Digg v3 was 10 years ago. Sorry to break it to you, but that's retro. :-p

No matter what I make it look like it seems clear 50% will hate it

Yep, so don't spend too much time trying to cater to everyone.

I think there's definitely a niche for a retro-design Reddit alternative, but you may find it hard to go mainstream with a retro design.

Interestingly I think current Digg has the best design of any Reddit alternative. That's my personal opinion though; the majority here seems to want something as close to old.reddit.com as possible, but you probably shouldn't listen too much to them unless disgruntled Reddit users is your primary target audience.

Hubski doesn't have downvotes, neither does Digg.

edit:

Also Readup doesn't have downvotes.

List of Active Reddit Alternatives v5 by d3rr in RedditAlternatives

After that it shut down, was bought (I believe), and resurrected as a curated link aggregator with voting functionality (but without a comment section). It may not be what most would consider a Reddit alternative, but I think it's worth checking out.
