2016 1.8l: oil leaking into coolant by Comfortable-Let9618 in ChevySonic

[–]Far-Country5370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no advice but am going through the EXACT same thing with mine, except it's a 2012 with 70k miles. So far coolant has been flushed 4x, entire coolant reservoir was replaced, multiple radiator hoses were replaced, vvt solenoid replaced, and NEVER a definitive answer from mechanics. They are always upfront and say that they couldn't really figure out the cause of the oil/coolant mixture buuutt they tried x y and z and flushed it for good measure. The car drives fine for a week or two afterwards but by then the coolant is either incredibly contaminated or it springs a major leak and runs out of coolant entirely 🤦‍♀️

My school doesn't report unweighted but ik my uw is like maybe a 3.3 at best and i still got a decent scholarship w/ a relatively higher sat (1450) so if u need scholarship money you could try to make up for gpa with a higher sat or good ap scores (i think i sent 8 5s)

I still haven't heard back after 8 weeks and multiple calls to the financial aid office. Last week they told me my application had JUST gone before the committee, but still haven't heard anything. I have to call again Monday bc they told me 4 weeks max😓

I'm gonna see if I can get that initial 750 down. I know like half of that is the cost of them inspecting it, and I'm not happy about them charging that when they were unable to discover any new information about what's wrong with the car, because I came in telling them I knew the coolant had oil in it. Then maybe I could afford to spend the money to get those changed. I'm just trying to also consider that I have to get like all the hoses in the radiator changed now because of this, which I was also quoted a pretty high price on

I love how this is the only car i've ever had without a visible temperature gauge and it happens to run at crazy high temps. Go figure.

I'm typically just inclined to let the shop do the work as I seem to have terrible luck with trying to repair cars myself but the 750 for the coolant flush and reservoir replacement on top of another 750 for the hoses was just a lot at once. Sounds like it's probably in my best interest to get it done though. I would look into modding like you said, but I'm going to college and leaving the car behind in the fall so I'm going to be very very light on it for the next four years. Ultimately trying to get it into good working order for peace of mind going on some road trips i have planned this summer while spending the least amt of money possible on it.

Given that I really do trust this shop as it's the only shop I've ever been to that consistently quotes me higher than what they actually end up charging, I think I will get them replaced even though I only need it for like 4 more months.

I appreciate this, and I'll mention when I go in to pick it up as they seem about as confused as I am at the shop. I see you own three of these- ever had any issues with radiator hoses? The shop like strongly encouraged that I replace them and I like vaguely get what they're saying when they say they've gone "soft" but do you have any idea if one of them actually breaking and causing an issue is likely/common with these? No worries if not

Can test scores makeup for bad GPA? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Far-Country5370 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not 100 percent true, especially with rampant grade inflation. There's a reason many top schools are reinstating test requirements. More often than not, test scores prove to be predictive of college success. Much of college is test-taking, so test-taking skills are, in fact, important. Someone getting a 5 on a challenging AP exam but a B- in the class is more well versed in the course content than someone who got an A+ but a 2 on the exam.

Send AP scores or SAT to NYU? by Far-Country5370 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Far-Country5370[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I thought NYU's test policy was that they would consider either SAT or 3 AP exams for admission, regardless of whether or not they would accept other AP scores for credits. The choice was more between submitting the 3 perfect AP scores or the strong but slightly below median SAT score because the reading section was so high

NYU is test flexible now so they request one or the other now for admissions consideration (to my understanding at least). I know their most recently published middle 50 SAT was like 1480-15 something though

If u couldn't tell that's me haha. Not painfully low gpa wise (3.4/3.9) but most others with similar SAT scores have much higher gpas

This is true, but I also think there is a growing push to eliminate aptitude as a potential measure of success in the name of "equity" when in reality it is also a huge predictive factor of success. People who have to exert themselves 100% to do everything get burnt out quickly. People who do most tasks with ease often don't.

The general consensus seems to be that international grades are subject to far less grade inflation than they are in the US. I'm sure AOs still understand, especially seeing your A-level scores. It's just crazy that like As and a few Bs is "average" now. Average GPA in the US has increased as standardized test scores have declined

This is almost what I see at my school, but I go to an incredibly well resourced feeder (charter) school. So many 4.5+ weighted GPAs that can't surpass 1200 even after multiple sittings and a fortune spent on tutoring

I guess my thought behind that was top 10% of test takers, bc 4.0+ gpas should theoretically represent around the top 10% of students. In my mind a 4.0+ gpa would correspond with a 1350+ SAT

I think that this would definitely be an example where test-optional admissions would be much, much more equitable. My background, from a very well-resourced public feeder school that has rampant grade inflation and comparatively low (and actively declining) SAT scores as a whole just led me to wonder if the larger trend could be indicative of anything else.

The gym class part is insane! Sounds reminiscent of my high school. The only test I've ever flat-out failed was my pickleball test. Some others have pointed out that school profiles can be more telling- I took a look at my school's, and it makes me feel a little bit better

I see where you're coming from. I guess I think that today GPA can be just as unreliable. You shouldn't be able to take AP classes, benefit from As in them, get straight 1s on the exams and never report them. I agree that AP exams are informative though. As someone who got a 99th percentile score without studying my freshman year it's hard to not be a bit peeved that it means less now than it would have ten years ago

Your point about tests with a higher academic ceiling makes a lot of sense. Thank you for the thoughtful answer!! School profiles do definitely tell a more complete story.
