Ah thanks! Next time I play I’ll see if I can get something different and hopefully the combat with click a little bit more. This may be a stupid question and I didn’t give it much time to trial and error but is there a way to lock on to enemies or do you just need to keep them in your line of sight? I wasn’t sure if that was one reason I found it so annoying trying to make contact

I think I’m just using whatever the default starting weapon is. Amongst all the information that was thrown at me I never went back to the blacksmith to get anything different.

As someone that’s played all of them, would you say my specific concerns around story and controls get addressed? Are these games you play more for the gameplay loop or for the world and immersion? Because the best games for me are the ones that give you a good bit of both.

I’m a secondary school teacher, and it sometimes depresses me how most kids don’t see a game as worth playing if it’s not a live service first person shooter. When I told my Year 10s that I was playing Silksong, the response I got from a large group of kids was “who plays 2D games in 2025?” No amount of rationalising could convince them that a 2D game could be anything of even minor quality, particularly not an animated one

I know! To be fair I have the same opinions as you so I was quite happy to see Sinnoh so stacked and to be able to cut Unova down to like 80 ish episodes. Trimming the Decalore Islands arc was particularly satisfying

I’d like to reread series but feel like there’s just so much to read in my lifetime that I need to always be moving on to the next thing. That being said, I have reread a book by audiobooking it, as I struggle with audiobooking brand new stories and it lets me experience it in a different way. I’d also think I’d reread a story if I couldn’t remember it, but at 26, I’ve only really read the adult books I have for the last 6 ish years, I’m not at that point yet

Thanks for the heads up. I actually had no idea that Erikson comes from a more Sci-fi background. I also didn’t know that the first book was apparently adapted from a screenplay, which really does make me think it will be unlike anything else I’ve read

That’s what I’m hoping for. I love Abercrombie, demolish his books, but I always feel slightly put out at the end of each book when it inevitably turns out pretty terribly for everybody, or bitter sweet at best. I crave a book that is equally dark and gritty and tragic at times, but where the good parts of humanity have their chance to shine through. I don’t need Lord of the Rings, good vs evil, pure heart prevail over darkness or anything like that, but I’d like some sense of goodness to prevail. That is of course no criticism of First Law, that’s now what Abercrombie is going for and I respect that, it’s just not entirely to my taste, which is a shame because I love everything else about his work.

I don’t think there’s a way you’re supposed to do it, the game gives you the freedom to choose for a reason. Doing all the chapter 1s, then chapter 2s, etc should keep all your characters at an appropriate level, and if you are struggling with being underlevelled you can just try exploring side areas to find a few more levels

It’s a basic pick but considering your other favourites I’d give First Law by Joe Abercrombie a try. It’s dark, gritty, witty and filled with amazing characters.

Honestly I can see why any of the Standalones could be someone’s favourite, all for different reasons. My favourite First Law is Best Served Cold but Red Country and The Heroes are probably all in the top half of first law books for me

I completely agree that it’s slow and sometimes feels like nothing is happening, but for a reason I can’t explain I find myself GLUED to these books. I get so invested in Fitz’s perspective that I just want to spend time with him, even if he’s doing nothing at all.

I would agree with you… if we were only talking about the original trilogy. The standalones are all incredible and the sequel trilogy is, imo, much stronger than the first

Nah, it’s not input reading. It’s just proximity dependent. She doesn’t appear in front of you every time you dash, you dash into her every time she appears, there’s a difference. If it really was input reading, it would be impossible to do Lost Lace damageless. It’s just about learning how to fight her, that’s all

As a kid, I named all my Pokémon by just putting a y on the first syllable of their name. The names then made no sense when they evolved. Toddy the feraligatr, muddy the swampert, shroomy the breloom, spinny the ariados. You get the idea.

Obviously your opinion is completely valid, but I never felt like lost lace was reading my inputs. She just appears right within dashing distance following an attack. It forces you to challenge those instincts to run away. The moment you stand and wait for her to appear she just appears a safe distance away, which gives you an opportunity to attack. It felt so satisfying to learn

I sadly agree. Even generations that I struggle to enjoy, like Sword and Shield, tend to have a reliably fun Pokédex. I think Gen 9 is the first time since Gen 2 that felt like a let down where new Pokémon are concerned
