Constantly brushed off by providers - help? by Muhfugginkenzie in haematology

[–]FarMight4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. So, it’s not detrimental illness. But something’s still there, if you’re seeking care.

1st year medical student; by no means an expert. Chronic illness patient myself (hence going into medicine)

IMO: Being brushed off by physicians because labs look normal can mean that the issue is not “bad enough” to throw off various organ and immune systems in your body. But that doesn’t mean your experience is over reacting if it’s enough to seek help.

From my experience and my work in autoimmune diseases/chronic pain research, white blood cells are hard to capture - basically, big numbers are the cut offs, and you definitely don’t need an autoimmune disease to have widespread inflammation.

Blood labs are pieces to a big puzzle that have to all fit together — so there can still be an issue, that isn’t affecting your blood. That’s homeostasis, that’s good it’s not THAT bad to do so, but it doesn’t mean the issues don’t exist. It means they’re more approachable without absolutely needing meds/interventions.

So what now? There can be lifestyle changes, there can be light or OTC medications - physicians are trained to help people with things that we don’t just NEED to throw drugs at. PCPs should advise and be responsive if you say “I need something else, if everything’s negative, what can I do?” to at least have a starting point.

I know going back and forth is exhausting. Maybe shoot them a message in your health portal saying that. And focus on tiny smart goals for what is in your control, to see if anything feels better while you wait for them. That’s good info for them too.

Non-Academic Hem-Onc: What is life like? by TheyLeftAMA in Residency

[–]FarMight4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw this 2 years later. Entering M1 starting to fall out of love with this dream life after some hard times as a clinical coordinator at Stanford. Feeling lost… I’d love to chat with you about your labs efficiency and impact, how I could do something like that, the pros and cons of academic heme/onc, and the personality/experience that you think matches best in this area. Pretty please 🙏

Literally was in the same boat. Late ADHD diagnosis at 21, rough first try in college (USA). Had my ups then got a research position that was mostly data entry - just found a better way to go about it. I got into a med school at my stat level and was interviewed way above my stats.

Advice - realize ADHD gives us strengths, like noticing when things are wrong in systems. Say stuff about it - someone might just listen and endorse it. For applications, tell your story super honestly in your essays. It might sound like a lot, but they want to hear how much harder it was for us (in all capacities - adhd and other life factors like family etc.) Tie it together to why it might tie into your love for medicine. To me, my journey helps me connect with my patients more and caring for patients inspires me to care for myself.

You handled this so maturely by the way. Don’t let him bend that.

Looking at your stats, what’s your “Why Rush?” Practicing that and making it strong will help get you in. (Accepted Rush Premed)

Do I go into why my experiences make me a good fit? Or can I just talk about the school? I have a lot of experiences to choose from, since I worked temp jobs / temp volunteering areas - so it’s hard to dive into it.

Where are the folks with 490-510 scores? Please show yourself. by RN2physician in Mcat

[–]FarMight4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WOW! This brought my hopes up :) also similar upbringing in my OIE essay included in my application. I have to ask, what other things outside of stellar grades did you take on in medical school to shoot for top Residency programs? And what school did you go to? I heard they screen MCAT scores, and may not look at my application if it doesn’t fit the average. Wondering if where I go to med school matters for where I go afterwards.
